Abstract

Items made from thermoplastic expanded sheet materials comprising a layer of thermoplastic material 0.05-50, pref. 0.5-5 mm thick containing a blowing agent and covered on one or both sides with a 'fur' of non-woven mineral or synthetic or natural fibres of 1 25, pref. 2-15 denier strands applied as a loading of 10-200, pref. 20-100 g/m2. The fibres are embedded into the surface of the expandable sheet by press or calender treatment at a temperature below the effective foaming temperature, and the resulting composite sheet may be expanded and formed in a subsequent operation. several such sheets may be laminated together, pref. in low pressure moulds or between heated travelling belts. Pref. two such sheets are used to line opposite havles of a (belt) mould with the fur coated surface against the mould and a layer or pieces of reinforcing material trapped between the expandable surfaces.
