Abstract

Aqueous alkaline washing soln. is circulated between an absorption stage in which the gas mixture is washed by the soln. under superatmospheric pressure, and a regeneration stage in which the soln. is subjected to steam stripping under subatmospheric pressure to cause desorption of the acid gas. At least a part of the washing soln. is evacuated from the absorption stage in the form of a hot stream at a temp. above the boiling temp. at atmospheric pressure, of the regenerated soln., and at least two regeneration zones are provided, in which the soln. from the absorption stage is subjected to stripping with steam to cause desorption of the acid gas under pressures considerably below the pressure in the absorption stage. One of the regeneration zones is maintained as a high pressure and high temp. zone operating under a superatmospheric pressure and this high pressure zone is fed with the soln. from the absorption stage at a temp. above the boiling temp. under atmospheric pressure, of the regenerated soln. The other regeneration zone is maintained as a low pressure and low temp. zone receiving a steam separated from the soln. of the absorption stage. The pressure on the regenerated soln. leaving the high pressure regeneration zone is reduced, thus causing the formation of steam and cooling the soln., and the formed steam is introduced into the low pressure regeneration zone as stripping steam. The regenerated streams provided by the high pressure and low pressure zones are recirculated to the absorption stage.
