Abstract
An extruded plastic sheet is fed between two ribbed calender rollers and becomes corrugated. It is carried on the warmer of the two rollers and is met by a freshly-extruded flat sheet, which is pressed against it by a heated smooth roller. The two sheets adhere by virtue of their warmth, without added adhesive. After an interval, during which the adhesion is established (the sheets cooling slightly), a further freshly-extruded flat sheet is similarly added, on the other side. The already-joined sheets pass across a roller, which opens the corrugations on the side to which the new, fully-warm sheet is to be applied. This allows for the contraction that will occur during cooling. A friction belt tensions the two-ply sheet just before the third ply is added. This helps the middle ply to regain its corrugated form afterwards.
