COMBINATION FOR CONNECTING RECTANGULAR PROFILES
The current invention relates to a combination for connecting two hollow profiles, a framework constructed using the combination, and a method for connecting two hollow profiles wherein use is made of the combination of the invention. The current invention further relates to a rectangular connector block for connecting two hollow rectangular profiles.
In the art, profiles are used to construct various types of frameworks. For example, these frameworks may be used to support appliances, such as heat pumps, in homes. The frameworks constructed by the profiles provide easily constructable structures which are flexible in use due to their relative strength and lightness. An upside of the use of hollow profiles is that these are more easily transportable to a desired location compared to preconstructed frameworks. In the art, the profiles are connected via various means, for example welding or via connecting pieces, e.g. which may use friction couplings.
A downside of known profile connecting means is that the connecting may be difficult to undo, e.g. in case of welding, or do not allow for various connection types, e.g. as is the case for a connection obtained via a connecting means, e.g. in the form of a corner block.
An aim of the invention is to allow for more flexible connections between hollow profiles.
The aim of the invention is achieved by the combination of claim 1.
The combination of claim 1 comprises a bolt, two hollow rectangular profiles, and a rectangular connector block.
The bolt comprises a bolt head and a bolt body having screw thread and a smaller diameter than the bolt head. The bolt of the invention may be a traditional bolt, or it may be embodied in another, suitable, manner, e.g. such as a screw having a screw head and a screw body having a smaller diameter than the screw head.
The hollow rectangular profiles of the combination have a rectangular cross section and each rectangular profile has a first outside wall and a second outside wall opposite the first outside wall. The first outside wall and second outside wall each comprises multiple large openings, having a larger diameter, and small openings, having a smaller diameter. Large openings of the first outside wall are opposite small openings of the second outside wall and small openings of the first outside wall are opposite large openings of the second outside wall. The large openings allow, i.e. due to their larger opening size, the bolt head of the bolt to pass therethrough and the small openings do not allow the bolt head to pass therethrough, but the small openings do allow the bolt body to pass therethrough.
Thus, the profiles allow the bolt to be provided through one of the large openings into a corresponding small opening such that the bolt head is inside the hollow profile. For example, the bolt head may be reached by a tool, such as a screw driver, through the corresponding large opening to fasten the bolt.
The rectangular connector block of the combination comprises one or more threaded connector openings for fixing the bolt body therein. The rectangular connector block is insertable in each of the hollow profiles by inserting the connector block in an open end of the corresponding hollow profile. The connector block preferably has a size matching a size of a cross section of the hollow profile. For example, once inserted into the hollow profile, the connector block is in contact with the hollow profile on multiple side walls of the connector block. The connector block is providable between any pair of the large openings and small openings of the corresponding hollow profile with the threaded opening of the connector block aligned with the corresponding small opening. For example, the connector block may be slided through the hollow profile such that one of the threaded connector opening is aligned with consecutive small openings which are distributed along a longitudinal direction of the hollow profile.
This allows the connector block to be aligned at with a small opening at various positions in the hollow profile which allows the bolt to be fixed into the threaded opening through a corresponding small opening at various positions of the hollow profile.
The two hollow profiles are connectable by — inserting the connector block in a first of the hollow profiles, — aligning one of the connector openings with one of the small openings of the first hollow profile and one of the small openings of the second hollow profile, and — fixing the hollow profiles by providing the bolt through the corresponding small profile opening of the second profile, through the corresponding small profile opening of the first profile and into the corresponding connector opening.
The invention allows for a more flexible way of connecting hollow profiles because the connector block may be provided at various positions in the hollow profile, allowing for multiple positions to connect the hollow profiles. Additionally, multiple connector blocks may be used to connect multiple hollow profiles.
The connections between the hollow profiles may also be easily undone by unfixing the bolt, e.g. with a screw driver. The small and large openings allow for flexible positioning of the connection and easy access to connect the two profiles using the connector block and the bolt.
In embodiments, a first of the one or more connector opening is provided in a side wall of the connector block. Thus, the connector opening is provided such that a connection may be made with a hollow profile provided to the side of the connector block, e.g. provided inside a corresponding hollow profile.
In embodiments, the connector block may have a height that is greater than a distance between two consecutive small openings in the hollow profile. In these embodiments, the connector block may be provided with two threaded openings in the side wall such that two bolts may be provided in the threaded openings through corresponding small openings that are aligned with the two threaded openings in the connector block.
In further embodiments, a second of the one or more connector openings of the connector block is provided in a bottom wall of the connector block, and wherein the two hollow profiles are further connectable by — inserting the connector block in the first hollow profile such that the bottom wall of the connector block is at the open end of the first hollow profile, — fixing the connector block to the first hollow profile with a first bolt in the first connector opening, and — fixing the connector block and the first hollow profile at the open end thereof to the second profile with a second bolt provided through a small opening of the second profile and in the second connector opening. This embodiment allows to connect to hollow profiles via a connection of second type, wherein one of the hollow profiles is with an end thereof connected to the second hollow profile. In this embodiment, the hollow profiles are perpendicularly connectable to each other. The connector block is inserted into the profile such that the bottom wall of the block is at the open end of the profile. The bottom wall of the block may be flush with the open end of the profile or the bottom wall may be recessed relative to the open end of the profile such that there is a distance between the open end and the bottom wall that allows the second bolt to be provided through the small opening of the second profile and in the second connector opening.
The second bolt may be longer than the first bolt, to allow the connector between the hollow profiles to be stronger. Thus, this embodiment allows for more flexible connections between hollow profiles for constructing a framework.
In embodiments, the connector block comprises a protrusion in the bottom wall having a shape corresponding with a circumference of the small openings, wherein the second connector opening is provided in the protrusion and wherein the protrusion is insertable into the small openings. In these embodiments, connections of second type, i.e. wherein a hollow profile is connected at an end thereof to another hollow profile, are stronger. A downside of connections of the second type is that the profiles may rotate relative to each other around the second bolt. This rotation is prevented by inserting the protrusion into the small opening having the corresponding shape. By fixing the second bolt, the protrusion is pulled into the second opening of the second profile, and the sides of the protrusion interlock with the small opening, preventing rotation of the profiles.
In embodiments, the shape is a square shape.
In embodiments, a height of the protrusion is less than a thickness of the outer walls of the hollow profiles. This allows the protrusion to be fixed into the corresponding small opening by the bolt, without the protrusion extending through the small opening, abutting the bolt head. If the protrusion were to abut the bolt head, the bolt may not be fully inserted into the second opening of the connector block and the connection may lose some of its strength. By making the height of the protrusion less than the thickness of the outer walls, the protrusion may not extend through the outer wall and may not abut the bolt head.
In embodiments, the protrusion has a tapered circumference, e.g. wherein a base of the protrusion is larger than a top side of the protrusion. This allows to better insert and fix the protrusion into the small opening.
In embodiments, the protrusion is provided in a recession in the connector block, wherein the recession has a depth that is less than a height of the protrusion. The recession prevents dust and other particles to negatively impact the strength of the connection. In particular, when fixing the two hollow profiles with the bolt, small pieces of the protrusion may be grinded by the second profile, which pieces may be collected in the recession.
In embodiments, the large openings and small openings are provided alternatingly in the corresponding outside wall along a longitudinal direction of the corresponding hollow profile.
The invention further relates to a framework comprising a combination according to the invention.
The invention further relates to a method for connecting two hollow profiles, wherein use is made of a combination according to the invention.
In embodiments of the method of the invention, the method comprises: — inserting the connector block in a first of the hollow profiles; — aligning the first connector opening with a small opening of the first hollow profile and one of the small openings of the second hollow profile; and — fixing the hollow profiles by providing the bolt body through the corresponding small profile opening of the second profile, through the corresponding small opening of the first profile and into the first connector opening.
In embodiments of the method of the invention use is made of a combination at least according to claim 3, wherein the method comprises: — inserting the connector block in the first hollow profile such that the bottom wall of the connector block is adjacent to the open end of the first hollow profile; — fixing the connector block to the first hollow profile with a first bolt in the first connector opening; and — fixing the connector block and the first hollow profile at the open end thereof to the second profile with a second bolt provided through a small opening of the second profile and in the second connector opening.
The invention further relates to a rectangular connector block for connecting two hollow rectangular profiles which is insertable in one of the hollow profiles by inserting the connector block in an open end of the hollow profile, wherein the connector block comprises one or more threaded openings therein for 5 receiving a bolt, wherein the hollow profiles each have a first outside wall and a second outside wall opposite the first outside wall, wherein the first outside wall and the second outside wall each comprises multiple large openings and small openings, wherein the large openings of the first outside wall are opposite the small openings of the second outside wall, wherein the small and large openings are distributed along a longitudinal direction of the hollow profile, and wherein the small openings of the first outside wall are opposite the large openings of the second outside wall, wherein the threaded opening of the connector block is such that the connector block is providable between any pair of the small openings and large openings with the threaded opening aligned with a small opening, wherein the two hollow profiles are connectable by — inserting the connector block in a first of the hollow profiles, — aligning one of the connector openings with one of the small openings of the first hollow profile and one of the small openings of the second hollow profile, and — fixing the hollow profiles by providing the bolt through the corresponding small profile opening of the second profile, through the corresponding small profile opening of the first profile and into the corresponding connector opening.
In embodiments of the connector block, a first of the one or more connector openings is provided in a side wall of the connector block.
In embodiments of the connector block, a second of the one or more connector openings of the connector block is provided in a bottom wall of the connector block, and wherein the two hollow profiles are further connectable by — inserting the connector block in the first hollow profile such that the bottom wall of the connector block is adjacent to the open end of the first hollow profile, — fixing the connector block to the first hollow profile with a first bolt in the first connector opening, and — fixing the connector block and the first hollow profile at the open end thereof to the second profile with a second bolt provided through a small opening of the second profile and in the second connector opening.
In embodiments of the connector block, the connector block comprises a protrusion in the bottom wall having a shape corresponding with a circumference of the small openings, wherein the second connector opening is provided in the protrusion and wherein the protrusion is insertable into the small openings.
In embodiments of the connector block, the shape is a square shape.
In embodiments of the connector block, a height of the protrusion is less than a thickness of the outer walls of the hollow profiles.
In embodiments of the connector block, the protrusion has a tapered circumference, e.g. wherein a base of the protrusion is larger than a top side of the protrusion.
In embodiments of the connector block, the protrusion is provided in a recession in the connector block, wherein the recession has a depth that is less than a height of the protrusion.
