Description
A CONTAINER FOR HOLDING AND DISPENSING A LIQUID COLOUR MATERIAL,
IN PARTICULAR A PAINT
The present invention relates to a container comprising the features according to the preamble of claim 1.
It is known in the art to dispense paint from a container.
For example, paint may be contained in cans from which it is re- moved by means of a brush. Also, removal from the container by hy- draulic or pump means for spray painting is well known. In addi- tion, the container may have the shape of a tube from which it is removed by manually pressing the tube.
These known containers provides the disadvantage that it is cumbersome to paint a small object, for example a small part of a wall, to try out the paint colour to determine the applicability thereof.
The present invention aims to resolve this disadvantage.
The invention also aims at providing an improved container of the kind mentioned in the preamble, which is suitable to be used with a tinting or dispensing machine in order to fill the contain- er with any color chosen by a user.
The invention further aims at providing a container that al- lows a user to cover any surface with a paint.
The invention also aims at providing a container that allows a user to get a perfect impression of the colour of the paint in the container before applying same to said surface.
The invention also aims to provide a container that can be easily filled with a small amount of liquid colour material, for example paint or colorant.
More in particular aims the invention to provide a container that can be filled by a tinting or dispensing machine for produc- ing small test amounts of a liquid colour material.
Furthermore, the invention aims to provide a container that provides easy handling to a user.
So as to obtain at least one of the above mentioned aims, the invention provides a container as mentioned in claim 1. This con-
tainer has the advantage that it can be easily filled by a tinting or dispensing machine.
It has also shown that the container according to the present invention allows a user to simply and quickly apply the paint to the surface without using any other tools. Such synergistic effect is an advantageous effect. The present invention also provides the advantage that a user can easily and simply determine the colour, degree of gloss, scrub resistance, scratch resistance, et cetera.
The invention therefore relates to a container for a liquid colour material, especially a paint or a colorant, comprising a body defining a reservoir for containing the liquid colour materi- al and an outlet opening for removing the colour material from the reservoir, wherein the container is characterized in that the con- tainer has a bottom and a side wall erect from the bottom, the container comprising a filling opening opposite the bottom for filling the reservoir with the liquid colour material and wherein the container comprises an applicator for receiving the liquid colour material that is removed from the reservoir through the outlet opening for applying the liquid colour material onto a sur- face. As a result, very small amounts, for example 100 ml of liq- uid colour material or even less, can be automatically filled into the container, or more specifically in the reservoir, for example by a tinting or dispensing machine or a like apparatus for dis- pensing liquid paints or colorants, without manual interruption by a user. The bottom is embodied for placing the container stably on a subsurface, for example a working table or a carrying surface of a paint mixer for carrying the container when filling the reser- voir by the paint mixer. As a result, when performing the filling operation, the container will not fall over.
More in particular, the invention relates to a container for a liquid colour material, especially a paint, comprising a body defining a reservoir for containing the liquid colour material and an outlet opening for removing the colour material from the reser- voir, wherein the container has a bottom and a side wall erect from the bottom, the container comprising a filling opening oppo- site the bottom for filling the reservoir with the liquid colour material and wherein the container comprises an applicator for re-
ceiving liquid colour material that is removed from the reservoir through the outlet opening for applying the liquid colour material onto a surface, wherein the applicator is a roller applicator, wherein the roller applicator is mounted on a carrier shaft that is carried at two opposite ends thereof by the supporting elements that are each connected to the body, and wherein at least one of the body and the container has a cylindrical shape with a longitu- dinal central axis.
Due to the applicator that is incorporated in the container according to the present invention, the liquid colour material can be easily removed from the reservoir through the outlet opening and onto the applicator for applying the liquid colour material onto the surface.
According to the state of the art, it was generally recog- nized and accepted that small test containers were available for a standard colour palette only. The present invention has found that it is possible to provide a solution for adding small amounts of colorants or paint mixtures to a container . It thus has become possible to make a small amount of your own colour mixture in a paint mixer and supply this small amount in a container according to the present invention, so as to be able to try out the specific amount. Hence, manual intervention is not required by means of the present container. The present invention thus provides a solution for a not previously known problem. In addition, the container may be prefilled with a standard base paint, after which a colorant is added to the base paint by means of a dispensing or tinting ma- chine to obtain a liquid colour material, also referred to as paint.
Preferably, either a diameter or a length and a width of the bottom are larger than a width and a height of the side wall, so as to provide an optimum stability to the container when filling same.
In this description, the material contained in or added to the container is generally referred to as colour material or liq- uid colour material, or as paint, or as colorant. It is to be un- derstood that the invention is not limited to a colorant if the term colorant is used but where a liquid colour material or a paint could replace the said term, et cetera and vice versa.
According to the invention, the container has a filling open- ing for supplying the colour material into the reservoir. Prefera- bly, the container furthermore has a lid for closing said opening.
Such allows for an easy and cost effective manufacture of the body of the container and the lid as two separate elements. Even more preferably, the lid comprises a transparent window.
It is preferred that the opening is substantially circular for receiving a substantially circular lid. Such provides a rigid and strong container which can be easily closed by the lid.
A preferred safe to use container is obtained when the lid is irremovably connectable to the body.
Herewith it is meant that the lid cannot be removed after same has been connected to the body of the container without dis- rupting the structural integrity of the body and/or the lid. After filling the colour material into the reservoir the lid is connect- ed or coupled to the container, after which an irremovable connec- tion of the lid to the container is obtained. Hence, the container is safe to store or transport.
According to another preferred embodiment, the container com- prises a lid that can be opened and subsequently closed again.
Such embodiment is for example suitable for prefilling the con- tainer with a base color paint in a factory after which the pre- filled container can be opened by a tinting or dispensing machine operator for adding a colorant to the container, chosen by a con- sumer. After closing the container the base colour can be mixed with the colorant. The consumer can then test the paint on a sur- face. The advantage of such embodiment consists of the fact that no base colour paint must be stocked at the shop.
So as to enable a user to simply remove the colour material from the container, the outlet opening is provided with a remova- ble seal for removing the colour material from the reservoir after removing the seal.
It is preferred for the applicator to be a roller applicator, which allows for a fast and even application of the colour materi- al.
When the container comprises a roller applicator, it is pre-
ferred that a gap is provided between the outlet opening and the roller applicator, the gap being at least 0.1 mm and maximally 5 mm. In such embodiment, the colour material is evenly distributed over the roller applicator providing an even application of the 5 material on the surface by performing a rolling motion of the roller applicator.
A simple embodiment of the container is obtained when the roller applicator is carried at two opposite ends by supporting elements that are each connected to the body.
In this respect, it is even more preferred that the roller applicator is mounted on a carrier shaft that is carried at two opposite ends thereof by the supporting elements that are each connected to the body. The carrier shaft provides an adequate and cheap embodiment for correct application on a surface since the roller applicator can roll without any substantial resistance and thus will provide an even application of the colour material on the surface.
A direct application of the colour material on the roller ap- plicator is obtained when the outlet opening is provided in the wall of the body at a position between said supporting elements.
So as to prevent any colour material to be spilled uninten- tially, it is preferred that the container comprises a protective cap for covering the roller applicator. Especially after using the roller applicator such protective cap provides an adequate protec- tion.
A container with a highly efficient containing space is ob- tained when at least one of the body and the container comprises a bottom wall and a side wall extending from the bottom wall, and wherein the lid is connectable to a periphery of the wall.
In such embodiment, it is even more preferred for at least one of the body and the container to have a cylindrical shape with a longitudinal central axis. In such embodiment, a disk shaped lid can be easily connected to the cylindrically shaped wall.
It is especially preferred that at least one of the body and the container has a closed bottom wall at a first longitudinal end and wherein the lid is connectable to an opposite longitudinal end of the cylindrical body.
According to a preferred embodiment, the invention provides a container that comprises a transparent window for allowing visi- bility of the contents of the reservoir. The transparent window provides an exact visual representation of the colour material in the container, unlike the containers in the state of the art. Such container has the advantage that a user obtains a perfect impres- sion of the colour of the paint inside even before painting a sur- face, with the additional advantage that the user can compare col- ours in different containers. According to the state of the art, the colour is depicted on a label at the outside of the container which is an ink colour that always deviates from the colour pro- vided by a paint. As mentioned above, the lid may comprise the transparent window.
Hereafter, the invention will be further described by means of a drawing. The drawing shows in:
Fig. 1 a container according to the invention in an exploded view,
Fig. 2 a container according to Fig. 1 in an installed state,
Fig. 3 a preferred embodiment of the container according to
Fig. 1.
The same and similar parts and features have been denoted by the same reference numerals in the figures. However, for ease of understanding the figures, not all parts that are required for a practical embodiment have been shown in the figures.
Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of a container 1 for containing a colour material, for example a paint. A ready to use container 1 is shown in Fig. 2, wherein parts as shown individually in Fig. 1 are combined into an installed state.
The container 1 comprises a body 2 with a bottom part 3 and a cylindrical wall 4. A longitudinal axis 5 is positioned centrally with respect to the cylindrical wall 4 and intersects the bottom part 3.
A reservoir 6 for colour material, for example paint, is de-
fined within the cylindrical wall 4. The bottom part 3 closes off the reservoir 6 at a first longitudinal end 7 of the body 2. The container 1 further comprises a lid 8 that is embodied for closing off the reservoir 6 at the opposite longitudinal end 9 of the body 2.
The bottom wall 3 and the cylindrical wall 4 are preferably manufactured as a unitary body.
The body 2 comprises an outlet opening 10 for removing colour material from the reservoir 6.
Preferably, the body 2 is made of a somewhat resilient mate- rial so as to enable a user to gently squeeze the body for remov- ing the colour material through the outlet opening 10.
A roller applicator 11 is positioned close to the outlet opening 10 at the outside of the body 2 such that it receives col- our material that is removed from the reservoir 6 through said outlet opening 10. A user can evenly apply the colour material on- to an intended surface by simultaneously removing the colour mate- rial from the reservoir 6 and performing a rolling motion of the roller applicator 11 along the surface to be coated with the col- our material.
The roller applicator 11 is carried by a bearing shaft 12 that is carried by two supporting elements 13, 14. In the embodi- ment shown, the supporting elements 13, 14 are rigidly connected to the body 2. A seal 15 is provided for closing off the outlet opening 10 until it is intended to remove colour material from the reservoir 6.
Finally, a protective cap 16 can be used for covering the roller applicator 11 after same has been used, to prevent paint residues from accidentally and unintentionally contaminating other materials or surfaces. Also, the protective cap 16 protects the roller applicator 11 from being contaminated with other contamina- tions before same is used for applying the colour material to a surface on which the material is to be tested. Such contamination might affect the colour.
In Fig. 2 the container 1 is shown in an installed state, wherein the protective cap 16 and the seal 15 should be removed before a user can use the container 1.
Fig. 3 shows a preferred embodiment wherein a guiding element 17 is provided besides the outlet opening 10. This guiding element 17 ensures that any colour material, for example paint, is guided to the roller applicator 11.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments as mentioned above and as shown in the drawings. The invention is limited by the claims only.
The invention also relates to all combinations of features described here independently of each other.
