Description

019986 NL-PD\VB
Fire resistant door
The invention relates to a fire resistant door compris- ing a door leaf and a suspension system wherein the door leaf is suspended from the suspension system, enabling the door leaf to slide between an open position and a closed position.
An example of such a fire resistant door is for in- stance known from EP2312104A1.
It is an object of the invention to improve the fire resistant properties of the door, and to that end the fire re- sistant door of the invention is provided with the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the fire resistant door comprises a heat sensitive breakable connection between the suspension system and the door leaf, wherein breaking the heat sensitive breakable connection causes the door leaf to assume a secure position that prevents fire breakthrough.
Preferably the heat sensitive breakable connection is designed to collapse when subjected to a fire for a predeter- mined duration.
Desirably the fire resistant door of the invention is designed such that breaking the heat sensitive breakable connec- tion causes the door leaf to sink into the secure position.
Advantageously at its underside the door leaf is pro- vided with a first wedge-shaped portion, and that a correspond- ing mirror image second wedge-shaped portion is provided on a floor below the door leaf.
Accordingly the fire resistant door of the invention is preferably designed such that when the heat sensitive breakable connection is broken, the first wedge-shaped portion and the second wedge-shaped portion engage each other to close off the fire resistant door against the floor below the door leaf.
To promote the fire resistant properties of the door of the invention it is desirable that along circumferential edges of the door leaf heat resistant hooks are provided to maintain the door leaf in the secure position after breaking the heat sensitive breakable connection.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of a fire resistant door according to the invention that is not lim-
iting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1A shows the fire resistant door of the inven- tion in a frontal view and a side view in a normal operational state without fire being present: -figures 1B and 1C show details of the door shown in figure 1A; -figure 2A shows the fire resistant door of the inven- tion in a frontal view and a side view in a state wherein the door is activated to block a fire breakthrough; ; - figures 2B and 2C show details of the door shown in figure 234; -figure 3A shows the fire door of the invention in the secure position; -figure 3B shows a detail of figure 3A; -figure 4A shows the fire door of the invention in the secure position; and -figure 4B shows a detail of figure 4A.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Turning first to figure 12, it shows a fire resistant door 1 comprising a door leaf 2 and a suspension system 3 where- in the door leaf 2 is suspended from the suspension system 3, which enables the door leaf 2 to slide between an open position and a closed position, when no fire is present.
When fire is present the door leaf 2 can no longer slide between an open position and a closed position, but is converted into the situation that the door leaf is permanently closing off the entry or exit to which it belongs. This is de- picted in figure 2A.
In order to arrive from the normal situation shown in figure 1A into the fire blocking position shown in figure 2A, the fire door 1 of the invention comprises a heat sensitive breakable connection 4 between the suspension system 3 and the door leaf 2, wherein breaking the heat sensitive breakable con- nection 4 causes the door leaf 2 to assume a secure position that prevents fire breakthrough. To avoid a too early activation of the breakable connection 4, it is preferred that the heat sensitive breakable connection 4 collapses only when subjected to a fire for a predetermined duration. There are several ways in which the heat sensitive breakable connection can be engi-
neered. In one suitable embodiment the heat sensitive breakable connection can be made from an engineering plastic, but this is not essential.
In a preferred embodiment as depicted in the figures, breaking the heat sensitive breakable connection 4 causes the door leaf 2 to sink into the secure position. This is preferable because it brings into effect a first wedge-shaped portion 5 provided at the underside of the door leaf 2, which can then co- operate with a corresponding mirror image second wedge-shaped portion 6 that is provided on a floor 7 below the door leaf 2.
This is shown and can easily be understood by comparing figure 1C and figure 2C.
Figure 1C relates to the situation that no fire is pre- sent and the heat sensitive breakable connection 4 is intact.
The first wedge-shaped portion 5 and the second wedge-shaped portion 6 are then at a predefined distance from each other. In that situation the door leaf 2 can move to the left and to the right between an open position and a closed position. Wheels 8 are provided near the underside of the door leaf 2 to guide the door leaf in this motion between the open position and the closed position.
Figure 2C relates to the situation that the heat sensi- tive breakable connection 4 is broken, and the first wedge- shaped portion 5 and the second wedge-shaped portion 6 engage each other to close off the fire resistant door 1 against the floor 7 below the door leaf 2. In that situation the door leaf 2 is blocked from moving to the left or to the right between an open position and a closed position, but is permanently closing off the entry or exit to which the door 1 belongs.
To secure the permanency of the closure of the fire re- sistant door 1 of the invention, figures 3A and 4A as well as the details shown in figures 3B and 4B depict that circumferen- tially along edges of the door leaf 2, heat resistant hooks 9, 10 are provided to maintain the door leaf 2 in the secure posi- tion after breaking the heat sensitive breakable connection 4.
The heat resistant hocks 9 are provided as an inner hook, where- in these hooks 9 are anchored into a (mostly) concrete wall 10.
The hooks 9 are also provided at the inner side near to the door handle 11 and these hooks 93 are also anchored into the concrete wall 10.
Embodiments of the present invention can include every combination of features that are disclosed herein independently from each other. Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the fire resistant door of the invention, the invention is not re- stricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contra- ry the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
Variations and modifications of the present invention will be obvious to those skilled in the art and it is intended to cover in the appended claims all such modifications and equivalents. The entire disclosures of all references, applica- tions, patents, and publications cited above are hereby incorpo- rated by reference. Unless specifically stated as being “essen- tial” above, none of the various components or the interrela- tionship thereof are essential to the operation of the inven- tion. Rather, desirable results can be achieved by substituting various components and/or reconfiguration of their relationships with one another.
