Description

MOWING DEVICE FOR MOWING BANKS OF WATERCOURSES AND METHOD
THEREFOR
The present invention relates to a mowing device for mowing banks of watercourses. The present invention further relates to a method for mowing a bank of watercourses.
Known are mowing devices for mowing banks of watercourses that are provided with a container and a mowing element arranged on the container. The mowing element is configured to cut vegetation that is growing on the bank of watercourses, after which the cut vegetation is collected into the container. The known mowing devices can be attached to a crane, tractor or boat which are provided with an arm that is connected to the mowing device and is configured to move the mowing device over the bank of the watercourse.
When a crane is positioned next to the watercourse, the mowing device moves into a direction that is perpendicular to the throughflow direction of the watercourse. A downside of the known mowing devices is that during mowing not only cut vegetation is collected into the container, but also fish that is swimming in the watercourse. After mowing the cut vegetation, together with the collected fish, is deposited on the land next to the watercourse. In general, the fish do not survive being on land for long.
It is an object for the present invention to obviate or at least reduce the abovementioned problems. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to increase the chance of preserving wildlife during the mowing of banks of watercourses.
This object is achieved by a mowing device for mowing banks of watercourses, wherein the mowing device comprises: - a container that is provided with a receiving opening for receiving cut vegetation, wherein the container comprises a wall having a width in a width direction; - a mowing element for cutting vegetation that is provided adjacent to the receiving opening, wherein the container comprises at least one fish opening that is provided in the wall remote from the receiving opening, wherein the fish opening is configured to allow fish to passage through the wall when fish is positioned in the container.
An advantage of the fish opening is that fish 1s allowed to pass through the wall of the container when fish is positioned in the container. In this way, the fish are able to exit the container during mowing with the mowing device. As a result, the fish are not deposited on the land next to the watercourse when the mowing device is retracted from the water and/or emptied on the banks adjacent the watercourse. This reduces the number of fish that is killed during mowing of the banks of watercourses.
Another advantage of the fish opening is that a more open construction of the container is obtained. This reduces the amount of turbulence in water, and, as a consequence, the amount of muddy water that is created by movement of the mowing device over the bottom surface of the watercourse. As the amount of oxygen in the water is hereby decreased less, this further increases the chance of survival for the fish during mowing. In the context of the present invention the container can also be denoted as reservoir or bucket. The container is an element that is configured to receive cut vegetation.
The mowing element is provided adjacent to the receiving opening such that cut vegetation is easily collected into the container. The mowing element comprises at least one cutting edge that is configured to be directed in the mowing direction. The mowing direction is defined as the direction in which the mowing device moves during mowing. The mowing direction is generally perpendicular to the width direction of the mowing device.
The fish opening preferably is located opposite of the receiving opening. In an embodiment, the minimum distance between the fish opening and the receiving opening is 2 centimetres, preferably 5 centimetres, and most preferably 10 centimetres. During use, when the mowing device is moving in the mowing direction, the receiving opening is in front such that the cut vegetation is collected through the receiving opening in the container. By movement of the mowing device in the mowing direction the cut vegetation, and thereby also the fish that are collected, are guided towards the back of the container of the mowing device, wherein preferably the wall of the container is positioned. By providing the fish opening opposite of the receiving opening, at the back of the mowing device, the fishes are automatically guided towards the fish opening when the mowing device is mowing. This increases the chances of fish being able to escape the container.
In the context of the present invention watercourses comprise for example channels, rivers, ditches or tranches. Banks are defined as the surfaces which support the water in the watercourse.
In general, the banks may comprise a horizontal surface positioned at the lowest point of the watercourse and two tilted surfaces at opposite sides of the horizontal surface that may be partially free of water.
In an embodiment the fish opening is provided in a side wall of the container. The side wall of the container stretches out in a plane that is perpendicular to the width direction of the container.
The width of the container extends in a width direction, wherein the width direction is perpendicular to mowing direction. The mowing direction is the direction in which the mowing device moves during mowing. Preferably, the mowing element therefore also extends in the width direction, such that the mowing blade of the mowing element is positioned perpendicular to the mowing direction in order to obtain a sufficiently large mowing area.
In an embodiment according to the invention the at least one fish opening extends substantially in the width direction of the wall of the container and a ratio of a width to a height of the fish opening is at least 3.
In general, fish are swimming in the throughflow direction of the watercourse. Normally, the mowing device is moved in the moving direction that is perpendicular to the throughflow direction of the watercourse. Therefore, fish are generally swimming in the width direction of the mowing device. An advantage of the fish opening extending in the width direction is that the fish openings are conform, that is in line with, the direction into which the fish are swimming, thereby increasing the chance of the fish exiting the container through the fish opening. By having the ratio of the width to the height of the fish opening of at least 3, an optimal result for both allowing the fish to exit through the fish opening and the cut vegetation to stay in the container is obtained. In the context of the present invention, the fish opening that extends in a width direction may be denoted as first fish opening.
In an embodiment the width of the fish opening is at least 30 centimetres, preferably at least 40 centimetres. The height of the fish opening is preferably in the range of 5-15 centimetres, preferably in the range of 8-12 centimetres, and most preferably is 10 centimetres.
In an embodiment according to the invention the at least one fish opening comprises a light emitting element provided on an edge of the at least one fish opening.
An advantage of the light emitting element is that the light guides the fishes to the openings. This increases the chance of the fish finding the opening and exiting the container through the fish opening. The edge of the fish opening is defined as the edge of the structure that defines the at least one fish opening.
In an embodiment according to the invention the at least one fish opening comprises an annular opening in the wall of the container.
The annular opening comprises a circular or annular opening in the centre of an annular element. Preferably, the annular element defines the circular or annular opening. The annular element may have an edge defining the circular or annular opening. The annular opening could be positioned anywhere in the wall of the container. For example, in case the wall of the container comprises bars, the annular element or opening could be positioned between the bars. Alternatively or additionally, the annular opening is positioned in a side wall of container. The annular opening is especially advantageous in combination with the light emitting element, as the light emitting element will guide the fish towards the annular opening.
Preferably, the diameter of the circular or annular opening in the centre of the annular element is in the range of 5-20 centimetres, preferably in the range of 10-15 centimetres, and most preferably is 12 centimetres.
In the context of the present invention, the annular opening may be denoted as second fish opening.
In an embodiment according to the invention the wall comprises a first wall provided with the mowing element and second wall, wherein adjacent edges of the first and second wall are at least partially disconnected from each other such that the fish opening is formed in between the adjacent edges of the first and second wall.
The adjacent edges are the edges of the first and second wall that are positioned near each other. The adjacent edges extend in a width direction. The adjacent edges can also be denoted as fish opening edges. Due to the adjacent edges being partially disconnected an effective and robust design of the mowing device with fish openings is obtained.
In an embodiment the first wall extends from a first edge to a second edge, the second edge being the adjacent edge of the first wall. The first edge of the first wall comprises the mowing element. The first wall is at least partly curved over a curvature, wherein the curvature preferably extends from the adjacent edge towards a transition edge. From the transition edge the first wall extends substantially flat towards the first edge. The first wall is preferably curved such that the first wall is concave relative to the receiving opening. The receiving opening is positioned between the first edge of the first wall and the second edge of the second wall. The second wall extends from the second edge towards the adjacent edge of the second wall. The first edge, second edge and adjacent edges preferably extend in the width direction. The mowing device comprises two side walls, preferably plate-shaped, that each extend in a direction perpendicular to the width direction and are positioned at the ends of the first, second and adjacent edges. A periphery of each of the side walls is defined by a straight line from the first edge to the second edge and the side edges that extend from the first edge of the first wall to the adjacent edge of the first wall and from the second edge from the second wall to the adjacent edge of the second wall. The second wall can be substantially straight, or have the same curvature as the first wall, or a combination thereof.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing device has a horizontal mowing position wherein the mowing element and an end part of the first wall near the mowing element are substantially parallel to a horizontal, wherein in the horizontal mowing position the adjacent edges of the first and second wall are horizontally offset when seen in the width direction, wherein the adjacent edge of the second wall is positioned further away from the mowing element than the adjacent edge of the first wall.
The horizontal is a horizontal surface, such as the horizontal surface of a watercourse. In the context of the present invention, a horizontal surface is parallel to a reference horizontal, such as the surface of the earth. Due to the horizontal offset of the adjacent edge of the second wall further away from the mowing element, a fish opening can be created in between the adjacent edges of the first and second wall.
In an embodiment according to the invention in the horizontal mowing position the adjacent edges of the first and second wall are substantially at a same vertical height relative to the horizontal.
Due to the opening edges having substantially the same vertical height the cut vegetation is 5 kept in the container during mowing of horizontal surfaces.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing device has a tilted mowing position that is defined by the mowing element and an end part of the first wall near mowing element being substantially tilted relative to the horizontal, wherein in the tilted mowing position the fish opening provides a passage that is free when seen in a horizontal direction perpendicular to 19 the width direction.
In the context of the present invention, tilted is to be understood as having an angle of 20- 70 degrees relative to the horizontal, preferably having an angle of 30-60 degrees relative to the horizontal. The horizontal direction is parallel to a reference horizontal, such as the surface of the earth.
An advantage of the passage being free when seen in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the width direction is that during movement of the mowing device in the mowing direction which is parallel to the tilt the fish are guided towards the fish opening that is provided between the adjacent edges.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing device further comprises at least one raising element that is provided at an underside of the wall of the container, wherein the underside of the wall projects towards a surface of the bank in use. wherein the raising element is configured to provide a distance between the underside of the wall and the surface of the bank during mowing.
The raising element preferably extends away from the underside of the wall. An advantage of the raising element is that the mowing element is provided at a distance to the surface of the bank during mowing. Therefore, the mowing element will not cut wildlife, such as frogs residing on the bank of the watercourse. This ensures that more wildlife is preserved during mowing.
In an embodiment according to the invention the raising element comprises a structure that extends away from an edge of the receiving opening whereon the mowing element is provided with a curved part and ends in a straight part, wherein the straight part is configured to be parallel to the underside of the wall.
Preferably, the straight part is parallel to an end part of the first wall that is flat. The straight part can effectively contact the surface of the bank, while the curved part ensures that a distance between the end part of the raising element and the underside of the wall is obtained.
In an embodiment according to the invention the container is at least partly a concave element wherein the wall of the container is at least partly curved, and wherein the wall further comprises a straight part extending from the curved part to the edge of the receiving opening whereon the mowing element is provided.
Preferably, the first wall is curved. Due to the concave container the cut vegetation can effectively be collected after cutting.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing element comprises two parallel blades that are positioned on top of each other and each having cut-outs, wherein at least one of the blades is reciprocally movable in the width direction.
Due to the reciprocal movement of at least one of the blades the vegetation that is growing on the banks of watercourses can effectively be cut. Preferably the other blade that is not reciprocally moving stands still. The cut-outs may be triangular shaped.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing device comprises a drive that is configured to drive the at least one reciprocally movable blade in the width direction, wherein the drive is positioned substantially flush with the wall of the container.
Due to the drive being flush with the wall of the container there is less turbulence in the water. As a consequence, the amount of muddy water that is created by movement of the mowing device over the surface of the watercourse. This further increases the chance of survival for the fish during mowing. Next to this, the drive being flush reduces the chance of fish being hit by moving parts of the drive, thus reducing the chance of harming fish.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing element comprises at least one blade, further comprising a protection element that at least partly shields the at least one blade.
Preferably, the blade has a cutting edge. Due to the protection element at least partly shielding the at least one blade the chance of fish being cut by the blade is reduced significantly.
In an embodiment according to the invention the mowing device further comprises an arm coupling that is configured to be connected to an extension arm.
Due to the arm coupling the mowing device can effectively be connected to an extension arm, for example an extension arm of a crane. The extension arm can effectively move the mowing device over the surface of the watercourse, thus achieving an efficient mowing. In an embodiment the arm coupling can also be directly connected to the crane, tractor or boat, thus without making use of an extension arm.
In an embodiment according to the invention the wall of the container comprises bars extending perpendicularly relative to the width direction.
An advantage of the bars is that a substantially open structure is obtained, which reduces turbulence during movement of the mowing device through water.
The invention further relates to a mowing assembly, wherein the mowing assembly comprises: - a mowing device according to any one of the aforementioned embodiments; and
- a vehicle or boat provided with an extension arm that is connected to the mowing device.
The mowing assembly has similar effects and advantages as described for the mowing device.
