Description
A quick change arbor for a releasably connectable tool
The invention relates to a quick change arbor for a tool that is releasably connectable to the quick change arbor, said quick change arbor comprising a longitudinal drive body with a drive end and a tool end, and an attachment portion for releasably connecting the tool with the longitudinal drive body, wherein the attachment portion is slidable with respect to the longitudinal drive body and wherein the attachment portion and the longitudinal drive body are provided with cooperating locking portions for rotaticnally and axially locking the attachment portion and the longitudinal drive body with respect to each other, and wherein the locking portion of the longitudinal drive body is embodied with a notch which is oriented transverse to a longitudinal body axis of the longitudinal drive body.
EP-B-1 827 741 discloses such a quick change arbor for a tool that is releasably connectable to the quick change arbor.
Within the terms of the invention and the tool to be disclosed hereinafter, it is essential that the attachment portion is slidable with respect to the longitudinal drive body so as to provide the possibility that the attachment portion with the tool connected thereto can slide along the longitudinal drive body. This provides an essential difference compared to another type of quick change arbor in which the attachment portion is fixed to the longitudinal drive body, as is for instance known from WO20212/121601, also in the name of the applicant.
The essential feature of having a slidable mounting of the attachment portion on the longitudinal drive body is required for easy disposing of material from the tool after use of the quick change arbor with the tool, which advantage is particularly prominent when the tool is a hole saw. It is however explicitly remarked that the invention is not restricted to a quick change arbor for only a hole saw. Also other tools can be applied in connection with the arbor, notably a cutter, a circular saw, a drill, a polishing disc or layer, a brush, a bore tool, a grinding tool or any other type of tool.
- 2 =
It is an object of the invention to simplify the construction of the quick change arbor according to the preamble, and to realize further advantages that may become apparent from the following disclosure.
In a first aspect of the invention the attachment portion of the quick change arbor comprises a house, which house is provided with a slidable knob that snugly fits in the house, and which knob comprises or connects to a transversely movable latch which in a relaxed position of the knob fits into the notch of the longitudinal drive body so as to provide an axial lock of the attachment portion and the longitudinal drive body, and that in a depressed position of the knob said movable latch is moved out of the notch so as to release the axial lock of the longitudinal drive body and the attachment portion. This promotes the ease of handling of the quick change arbor according to the invention, whilst also contamination of the cooperating latch and notch is prevented by the completely surrounding house.
In another aspect that can be applied separate or in combination with the above-mentioned feature according to the first aspect wherein the attachment portion comprises a house, which house is provided with a slidable knob that snugly fits in the house, the feature is applied that the knob has a through portion inside the house to enable that the longitudinal drive body extends through the house and through the knob, wherein the knob has at least one internal sidewall engaging a side of the longitudinal drive body that is correspondingly shaped with the said at least one internal sidewall of the knob so as to lock the longitudinal drive body against rotational motion of the longitudinal drive body with respect to the knob and with respect to the house in which the knob is provided. With this feature the slidable knob can be tailored to exactly meet the requirements that prevail for an effective rotational lock.
Moreover, particularly when the knob also embodies the axial lock according to the first aspect, manufacturing costs can be reduced because all the cost inducing factors are concentrated in the design of the slidable knob. This applies therefore particularly when the knob in accordance with the
- 3 = first aspect of the invention also comprises or connects to a transversely movable latch which in a relaxed position of the knob fits into the notch so as to provide an axial lock of the attachment portion and the longitudinal drive body, and that in a depressed position of the knob said movable latch is moved out of the notch so as to release the axial lock of the longitudinal drive body and the attachment portion.
Reliability and durability of the quick change arbor of the invention is promoted by the feature that the knob has plural internal sidewalls that are engaging sides of the longitudinal drive body that are correspondingly shaped as said plural internal sidewalls of the knob to provide the rotational locking of the longitudinal drive body and the knob with respect to each other.
For the shape and form of the internal sidewalls of the knob and the sides of the longitudinal drive body different options are available, notably that at least a part of the mentioned sides are shaped according to one of an oval, a polygon, hexagonal or square, or at least with flattened portions.
A further notable feature is that the part of the sides of the longitudinal drive body that are shaped according to one of an oval, a polygon, hexagonal or square, or with flattened portions is limited to an area within the house, in particular an area limited to where the knob is located.
Desirably the knob is loaded with a spring to urge the knob into the relaxed position wherein the transversely movable latch of the knob fits into the notch of the longitudinal drive body so as to provide the axial lock of the attachment portion and the longitudinal drive body.
In a favorable aspect of the invention the longitudinal drive body is provided with a detachable and replaceable pilot drill. There are many ways in which the pilot drill may be connected to the longitudinal drive body. The type of connection used therein is not essential to the invention.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the attached drawing of nonlimiting examples of a quick change arbor according to the invention.
Whenever in the drawing the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same or similar parts.
In the drawing: —-figure 1 shows an exploded view of a quick change arbor for low-power applications according to the invention; -figure 2 provides an isometric view at the quick change arbor of figure 1 in assembled form; -figure 3 provides a cross-sectional view at the quick change arbor of figure 1; -figure 4 provides an isometric cut out detail view at the house and the knob of the attachment portion of the quick change arbor of the invention; -figure 5 shows an exploded view of a quick change arbor for high-power applications according to the invention; -figure 6 provides an isometric view at the quick change arbor of figure 5 in assembled form; -figure 7 provides a cross-sectional view at the quick change arbor of figure 5; and -figure 8 provides an isometric cut out detail view at the house and the knob of the attachment portion of the quick change arbor of the invention.
With reference to figures 1 - 4 (low-power embodiment) and figures 5 - 8 (high-power embodiment) it shows a quick- change arbor 1 comprising a longitudinal body 3 having a drive end 4 and a tool end 5 and attachment portion 6 for attaching a tool. The tool is not shown but is usually selected from the group comprising a hole saw, a cutter, a circular saw, a drill, a polishing disc or layer, a brush, a bore tool, a grinding tool or any other type of tool. For many applications it is desirable that the longitudinal drive body 3 may also drive a pilot drill 16 as depicted in the figures. There are many ways in which the pilot drill 16 may be connected to the longitudinal drive body 3. The type of connection used therein is not essential to the invention.
The difference of the high-power embodiment of figures 5 — 8 in comparison with the low-power embodiment of figures 1 - 4, is that except for the larger size of the high-power embodiment, this latter embodiment is equipped with dual pins
— 5 = 17 to secure driving contact with the tool to be mounted on the attachment portion 6.
The attachment portion 6 is arranged for releasably connecting the tool with the longitudinal drive body 3, for which purpose the attachment portion 6 is provided with a central through going hole 7 such that a sliding of the attachment portion 6 over the longitudinal body 3 is possible.
In order to drive the tool with the longitudinal drive body 3, the attachment portion 6 and the longitudinal drive body 3 are provided with cooperating locking portions as to be discussed hereinafter for rotationally and axially locking the attachment portion 6 and the longitudinal drive body 3 with respect to each other.
For axially locking the longitudinal drive body 3 and the attachment portion 6 the longitudinal drive body 3 is embodied with a notch 9 which is oriented transverse to a longitudinal body axis of the longitudinal drive body 3. Further the attachment portion 6 comprises a house 10, which house 10 is provided with a slidable knob 11 that snugly fits in the house 10, and which knob 11 comprises or connects to a transversely movable latch 12 which in a relaxed position of the knob 11 fits into the notch 9 so as to provide the axial lock of the attachment portion 6 and the longitudinal drive body 3. This is clearly shown for both embodiments in figure 3 and in figure 7, respectively.
Figures 1, 3 and figures 5, 7 further show that the knob 11 is loaded with a spring 15 to urge the knob 11 into the relaxed position wherein the transversely movable latch 12 of the knob 11 fits into the notch 9 of the longitudinal drive body 3 so as to provide the axial lock of the attachment portion 6 and the longitudinal drive body 3.
In a {not shown) depressed position of the knob 11 against the force of the spring 15, said movable latch 12 is moved out of the notch 9 so as to release the axial lock of the longitudinal drive body 3 and the attachment portion 6.
With the features discussed hereinafter the longitudinal drive body 3 is also rotationally locked with reference to the knob 11 fitted in the house 10. For that purpose figure 1 and figure 5, respectively show that the knob 11 has a through portion 13 inside the house 10 to enable that the longitudinal drive body 3 extends through the house 10 and through the knob 11. This is also visible in figure 3 and figure 7. Figures 1, 4, 5 and 8 show that the knob 11 has at least one internal sidewall 14 which in normal use engages a flat side 8 of the longitudinal drive body 3. This flat side 8 of the longitudinal drive body 3 is correspondingly shaped with said at least one internal sidewall 14 of the knob 11 so as to provide a reliable lock of the longitudinal drive body 3 against rotational motion of the longitudinal drive body 3 with respect to the knob 11 and with respect to the house 10 in which the knob 11 is positioned.
Advantageously the knob 11 has plural internal sidewalls 14 that are engaging adjacent sides of the longitudinal drive body 3 that are correspondingly shaped as said plural internal sidewalls of the knob to provide sturdiness to the rotational locking of the longitudinal drive body 3 and the knob 11 with respect to each other.
The figures show that the longitudinal drive body 3 has a common hexagonal shape. This is however one of many possible embodiments; the longitudinal drive body 3 has at least a part of its sides shaped according to one of an oval, a polygon, hexagonal or square, or at least with flattened portions 8.
Preferably the part of the sides of the longitudinal body 3 that are shaped according to one of an oval, a polygon, hexagonal or square, or with flattened portions is limited to an area that is in assembled state located within the house 10, in particular in an area limited to where the knob 11 is located. This tremendously reduces the amount of required shaping operations that have to be performed on the longitudinal drive body 3.
