Description
A separation apparatus and method for dividing a stack of products
[01] The invention relates to a separation apparatus for dividing a stack of products while in transit on a conveyor. The invention further relates to a method for dividing a stack of products while in transit on a conveyor.
[02] In conventional art, packaging systems are known for providing bundled products in a package by dividing a stack of products which has been conveyed from a production stage. This separated stack of products is transported further into an apparatus, in order to be pushed into a paper bag.
[03] In most cases, products are fed into a packaging stage thereby forming horizontally stacked products, in which the products are stuck to each other. In order to create a bundle from the stack of products, usually, a separation apparatus is used to separate two products in the stack.
[04] A number of products in a bundle can be predetermined and the separation apparatus can be activated based on this predetermined number of products, while the stack of products are in transit on a conveyor. In known cases, the separation apparatus includes a tongue part, e.g. a knife, having a fixed position in the apparatus, and extending in a vertical direction perpendicular to a stacking direction of the stack of products. In response to the activation, the separation apparatus is lowered to a height, where the tongue is located between two products in order to separate them.
[05] However, the system is not always able to position the tongue or knife exactly in between two products to separate them. There is a significant chance that the tongue/knife will be positioned on top of a product and is slipping off the product to the recess between the two products.
[06] Also, because the tongue is in a horizontally fixed position and the products on the roll move with respect to the tongue/knife, meaning that there is always a sideways pushing force applied to the roll. As a result, the two products may not separate easily when pushing a horizontally stationary tongue/knife along a vertical direction between the products. Moreover, because of unforeseen deviations in the process, e.g. transmission time of the products, inhomogeneous size of the products in a bundle, etc., when the separation apparatus is activated, the tongue may not be located between the two products, instead, it may contact one of the two product to be separated. Because the separation apparatus is already activated, a force for separating the products will be exerted, first, to the respective product, by the fixed tongue, which causes imperfections, e.g. dents, on edges of the respective product.
[07] Examples of such stacked products include lids for containers, in particular lids for food containers, which are produced in bulk and must later be separated as part of the food packaging process. It is highly undesirable that the products, in particular when they are lids for food containers, become damaged as part of the separation process. Such damage to a lid, even if it is a minor dent that is barely visible, could lead to the later packaged food becoming spoilt while still in the package. In addition, market requirements can be extreme, so that even the smallest imperfection may cause a end-customer to reject a product as damaged or counterfeit.
[08] Therefore, there is a need for providing a separation apparatus in order to provide a clean separation without adversely affecting the quality of the products.
[09] Reference is made above to a separation apparatus in a packaging system, in particular in a food packaging system where the stacked products are parts of a food container, e.g. lids or the like. However, there are more processes and their systems that require an accurate separation apparatus. In such methods, the separation apparatus may result in quality issues of a product that is produced so that the limitations, drawbacks and disadvantages of the separation apparatus described above apply equally well to such other processes and systems.
[10] It is an objective of the invention to provide a device and method for an accurate division for a stack of products, in particular for stacked lids of containers, that are in transit on a moving conveyor, such as a conveyor belt.
[11] It is another or alternative objective of the invention to provide a separation apparatus that can provide an accurate separation between two products in the stack of products
[12] It is yet another or alternative objective of the invention to method for separating accurately two products in the stack of products, independently from deviation in the process.

[29] Embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like or same reference symbols denote like, same or corresponding parts, and in which
Figure 1 shows a block scheme of a packaging stage comprising a separation apparatus, and
Figures 2A, 2B, and 2C show schematic views of a separation apparatus having a separator frame, and a stack of products being in transit on a conveyor, and their configurations with respect to each other, for dividing the stack of products.
[30] Figure 1 shows a block scheme of a stage for separating bundled products by dividing a stack of products 200 while in transit on a conveyor 300. The stage comprises a feeding apparatus 400, a separation apparatus 100, and a packaging apparatus 500.
[31] In an exemplary embodiment as shown in Figure 1, a plurality of products are conveyed to a feeding apparatus 400 and fed to the conveyor 300 from there, thereby stacking horizontally, for example in a direction B, on the conveyor 300 in order to form the stack of products 200. Before, transmitting the stack of products 200 to the packaging apparatus 500, the stack 200 is divided by the separation apparatus 100 in order to form a first bundle 210 for a first package in the packaging apparatus 500. A bundle can comprise one or more products.
[32] In some examples, the separation apparatus 100 can be activated based on a predetermined number of products in the first bundle 200. In that case, one of the two products in the stack 200 defines a last product of the first bundle 210, and other one defines a first product in a second bundle (not shown) which will be formed next by further dividing the stack 200 on the conveyor 300.
[33] After the first bundle 210 is separated from the stack of products 200, it is transferred to the packaging apparatus 500, on the conveyor 300, and pushed into a first package for a distribution.
[34] Figures 2A, 2B, and 2C schematically show the separation apparatus 100 in various stages of operation, according to some embodiments of the invention. The apparatus 100, comprises a separator frame 110, a separator 111, and an elastic element 112 attached to the separator 111 and separator frame 110. The separator 111 can move horizontally with respect to the separator frame 110 and is biased towards a central position along the horizontal axis A, B, by the elastic element 112.
The separator 111 has a linear part 111b and a tongue 111a attached to one end of the linear part 111b. The tongue 111a extends from the one end of the linear part 111b in a vertical direction perpendicular to the stacking direction B of the stack of products 200 when in transit.
[35] In some embodiments, the separator frame 110 may further comprise at least one linear guide 113 that is configured to guide the tongue 111a to move along the horizontal axis A, B, while being biased towards a central position along said axis by the elastic element 112. Preferably, the linear guide 113 has a very low friction and the elastic element does not bias very strongly, so that the separator 111 can move relatively freely along the horizontal axis when under the influence of external horizontal forces.
[36] Figure 2A schematically shows a configuration of the separation apparatus 100 and the stack of products 200 with respect to each other, before the separation operation. The separator frame 110 is configured to be arranged above the stack of products, that is, at a vertical height. From this height, the tongue 111a is configured to be moved along the vertical direction to enter into a recess 220 defined between two products 201, 202 in the stack of products 200. In some embodiments, the tongue 111a may have a tapered end opposing to the one end of the linear part 111b attached to the tongue 111a, in order to ensure that the tongue 111a can move accurately into the recess 220.
[37] According to an embodiment of the invention, the apparatus 100 may further comprise a control unit configured to control the height of the separator frame 110. The control unit may have a predetermined information regarding a number of products that is defined for the first bundle 210 to be packaged. Based on said information, the separator frame 110 can be informed by a signal transmitted by the control unit, in order to be arranged at the vertical height.
[38] Figure 2B schematically shows a configuration of the separation apparatus 100 and the stack of products 200 with respect to each other, when the separator frame 110 is arranged at the vertical height for engaging with the recesses.
In the shown configuration, because of some deviation in the process of packaging, a misalignment, or simply by chance, the tongue 11 1a first contacts one of the two products 201, 202, instead of being located in the recess 220, directly. When the tongue 111a contacts one of the two products 201, 202 and may be dragged along with the product with which it engages, it causes a force to work on the elastic element 112 so that the elastic element 112 stores an amount of energy based on said reaction force. At some point, the tongue will find the recess and engage with it (enter into it), so that the products are separated. Afterward, the separator 111 and it’s frame 110 is moved upwards again, so that the tongue loses contact with the product. This will also remove the external horizontal force, exerted by the product, so that, in the absence of other horizontal forces, the bias of the spring will move the separator 111 with tongue 111a back towards its central position.
[39] In some exemplary embodiments, the elastic element 112 may comprise a spring having a spring constant that is arranged so that the separator can move relatively freely (in order to find the recess when contacting the product) yet strong enough to move the separator back to the central position in the absence of external horizontal forces. With routine experiments, the skilled person can come up with a suitable elastic element (e.g. a spring with a certain spring constant) dependent on these parameters of the production process.
[40] In an embodiment of the invention, if the tongue 1114 first contacts the product 202, the elastic element 112 may drag the tongue and connected linear part 111b in the direction B. In that way, the elastic element 112 is compressed by storing the amount of energy, in response to the reaction force. When the contact is released, this energy is used to move the separator back to the central position.
[41] Each product in the stack of products 200 may have an edge facing the separator frame 110, in a form which allows the two products 201, 202 to define the recess between each other. In some an embodiment of the invention, as a result of this form, the tongue 1114 may slide over the edge of the one of two products 201, 202 which the tongue (111a) contacts, in order to be located in the recess 220. For example, each product in the stack of products 200 may have a rounded edge, preferably a parabolic edge, facing the separator frame 110. A rounded edge will help guide the tongue to the recess, while the tongue is being moved in the vertical direction and the products are in transit in the horizontal direction. The additional horizontal freedom of movement of the tongue with respect to the separator frame 110 will help ensure that the products are not damaged by the contact with the separator.
[42] Figure 2C shows schematically a configuration of the separation apparatus 100 and the stack of products 200 with respect to each other, when the tongue 11la is located at the recess 220. In this configuration, a predetermined (vertical) force can be exerted on the separator frame 110 in order to separate the two products 201, 202, when the tongue 111a is located in the recess 220. In that way, the stack of products 200 are divided on the conveyor 300, thereby forming the first bundle 220 for packaging.
[43] In an embodiment, as shown in Figures 2A, 2B, and 2C, the separation apparatus may further comprise at least one dynamic insert 120 attached to the separator frame 110. The insert 120 may exert a predetermined pressure on to the separator frame 110 in order to separate the two products 201, 202, when the tongue 111a is located in the recess 220.
[44] According to an exemplary embodiment, the tongue 111a, as referred above, may be in the form a knife which is attached to the linear part 111b of the separator.
[45] According to another exemplary embodiment, the edge of each product in the stack of products, as referred above, may be in the form of a pyramidal, a conical, or etc., which provides an inclined surface on the edge which the tongue 111a contacts, and which guides the tongue towards the centre of the recess.
[46] Various other embodiments of the invention will be apparent to the skilled person when having read the above disclosure in connection with the drawings, all of which are within the scope of the invention and accompanying claims.
