Vertical air cleaning device
The present invention is in the field of domestic articles for filtering air, which therewith provides clean or purified air by removing contaminants from the air before releas- ing the air again. It relates to an air cleaning device comprising a ventilator or the like and an air filter, with improved air flow, improved design freedom, improved efficiency, and lim- ited costs. The device is typically a stand-alone device.
The present invention is in the field of an air cleaning device. Such a device removes contaminants from the air, such as in a room, workplace, hospitals, or otherwise, and 1s aimed at improving indoor air quality. A large variety of contaminants can be removed, such as dust, allergens, pollen, particles in general, smoke, and so on. They are considered benefi- cial to people suffering from allergy sufferers and asthmatics. Also in certain cities, with increased smog or air pollution levels an indoor environment may be properly cleaned. The present invention relates primarily to a stand-alone unit of typically limited size. For certain applications a high-grade filter may be used, such as an high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
In general, there are two types of air purifying techniques, namely active and passive.
Active air purifiers release negatively charged 10ns into the air, causing pollutants to stick to surfaces, while passive air purification units use air filters to remove pollutants. The present invention relates mainly to a passive system. Passive purifiers are more efficient since all the dust and particulate matter is permanently removed from the air and collected in the filters.
However, filters may need to be cleaned on a regular basis.
A problem with prior art cleaning devices is that the offer a limit design freedom.
Such typically results in more complex systems with higher associated costs. A further prob- lem may be that an efficiency is limited, also in view of a flow path of air. In some cases, also the amount of air flow provided is too small, at least partly because the device can not be positioned properly in sometimes smaller indoor environments, such as sleeping rooms.
The present invention therefore relates to an improved air cleaning device and further aspects thereof, which overcomes one or more of the above disadvantages, without compro- mising functionality and advantages.
It is an object of the invention to overcome one or more limitations of the air cleaning device of the prior art and at the very least to provide an alternative thereto. The present in- vention relates to a new type of air cleaning device, which typically is a vertical positioned device. It primarily relates to a passive air cleaning device, though certain active elements may be added. The present vertical air cleaning device (1) comprises three main visible parts, namely a bottom part (10), a longitudinal central part (20), and a top part (30). The bottom part comprises a bottom air inlet (11) with openings (12) at a bottom side thereof, incorporated in the bottom part a ventilator (14) providing a first air flow from said air inlet to the central part, at a top side (15) of the bottom part a constricted section (16) providing a
Venturi effect. The central part comprises a substantially closed housing (21), the housing enclosing and incorporating at least one air filter (22), wherein the housing comprises a cen- tral air inlet (23) at a bottom side (24) thereof, which central air inlet is typically located pe- ripheral. The top part comprises a top air inlet opening (31) located above the at least one air filter, a top outlet (32) comprising at least one opening (33), incorporated in the top part a fan (34) providing a second air flow from said top air inlet to the top air outlet. The bottom air inlet, central air inlet, air filter, top air inlet, and top air outlet are in fluid connection with one and another. Therewith two air flows are provided, wherein the Venturi flow is consid- ered to support the second flow. Typically, the Venturi flow may be considered as a first flow for starting up the second flow. As such the present air cleaning device is found to pro- vide higher throughputs, in terms of m°/hour, under limited power consumption, and yet providing sufficient cleaning. In addition there is no need for air openings at a side of the cleaning device. The top fan may as a consequence provide a relatively lighter performance, as it is supported by the bottom ventilator and the Venturi effect. As a result the present de- vice is relatively silent, typically < 60 dB, and in particular < 40 dB. The present device may be provided with at least one control, for regulating an air flow, and in particular with at least one control for adapting the performance of the bottom ventilator in view of the performance of the top fan, and vice versa. The at least one control may be in the form of an incorporated control, such as a printed circuit board, in the form of an external adaptable control, such as a knob, or a combination thereof.
The present invention provides a solution to one or more of the above mentioned problems and overcomes drawbacks of the prior art.
