Abstract

A mortar projectile (7) for use with a mortar handling training aid, said mortar projectile comprising a mortar body (7”) and a mortar tail (7’), wherein the mortar tail (7’) is movable with respect to the mortar body (7”). There are at 5 least two embodiments. In a first embodiment the mortar tail (7’) is retractable in—to the mortar body (7”). In a second embodiment the mortar tail (7’) is pivotably mounted on the mortar body (7”).

Description

A mortar projectile The invention relates to a mortar projectile for use with a mortar handling training aid comprising a mortar body and a mortar tail.
Health regulations impose certain restrictions in training mortar handling. Mortar handling is trained with a system equipped with a base plate, a tripod supporting a train- ing tube with an opening at its lower end which is provided with a launchpad, wherein mortar projectiles with ‘click on’ charges for training are deposited in the training tube. The mortar projectiles are ejected through the opening at the lower end of the training tube and the launchpad.
A problem with existing mortar projectiles for train- ing is that such mortar projectiles can only be used with re- stricted length because of the restricted size of the opening at the lower end of the training tube.
It is an object of the invention to enable using mor- tar projectiles of all possible sizes that exist in practice, so as to improve the training experience.
According to the invention this object is achieved by arranging that the mortar tail is movable with respect to the mortar body so as to enable that the complete mortar projectile can be removed through the opening at the lower end of the training tube.
In a first preferred embodiment the mortar tail is re- tractable into the mortar body. When the mortar projectile ac- cording to the invention is thrown into the training tube, and when the mortar projectile hits the launching pad, the mortar tail is retracted inte the mortar body, which enables that the mortar projectile can leave the training tube through the open- ing at the lower end of the training tube.
In a second embodiment the mortar tail is pivotably mounted on the mortar body so as to arrange that the tail can be placed at an angle with reference to the body of the mortar, which also enables removal of the mortar projectile through the opening at the lower end of the training tube.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of a mortar training system and mortars according to the prior art and according to the invention.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a display of elements of a mortar pro- jectile training system; -figure 2A/B shows a training mortar projectile leav- ing an opening at the lower end of the training tube; -figure 3 shows training mortar projectiles of the prior art and according to a first embodiment of the invention; and -figure 4 shows training mortar projectiles of the prior art and according to a second embodiment of the inven- tion.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Figure 1 displays parts of a conventional training system for handling mortar projectiles. The training system comprises a base plate 1, a tripod 2 which in use supports a training tube 3 with an opening 4 at its lower end which is provided with a launchpad 5. The figure also shows the original tube 6, and a couple of training mortar projectiles 7 with click on charges.
Figures 2A/2B show the training system in firing posi- tion wherein a mortar crew training mortar projectiles 7 into the training tube 3. Such training mortar projectiles 7 leave the training tube through the opening 4 and via the launchpad 5, to be caught by the crew.
Figure 3 shows some types of training mortar projec- tiles 7 which can be used with the training system, i.e. a shorter type mortar projectile having a length of approximately 490 mm, and a longer type mortar projectile with a length of approximately 604 mm. The latter type is shown in the middle figure 3, and on the right hand side of the figure in a situa- tion wherein the mortar tail 7’ is retracted into the mortar body 7’7. As a result thereof the mortar projectile assumes a length which enables it to leave the training tube 3 through the opening 4 at the lower end of the tube 3.
Finally figure 4 shows the same types of training mor- tar projectiles 7 as shown in figure 3, together with what is shown on the far right side a second embodiment of a mortar 40 projectile according to the invention, wherein the mortar tail
7’ is pivotably mounted on the mortar body 7’. This enables that despite its length of approximately 604 mm, also this mor- tar projectile 7 can be removed from the training tube 3 through the opening 4 at the lower end of the training tube 3. Although the invention has been discussed in the fore- going with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the mortar projectile of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claim strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the em- bodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the ap- pended claim without intent to limit the claim to this exempla- ry embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claim only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claim shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment. The following nomenclature applies.
