Abstract
Portable steadying device for cameras and smartphones to operate in combination with trekking poles. A portable steadying device for cameras and smartphones is provided, comprising a base member 1 with three cavities, a telescopically extendable support pole 9 and a camera mounting member 3. Said camera mounting member further comprises a yoke of a substantially curved shape with a slot, a bottom clamping member, a top clamping member, a mounting screw rotatably and slidably mounted through the openings of said bottom clamping member, the slot of said yoke and the opening of said top clamping member. The steadying device is operated with two conventional trekking poles 13 inserted into the two of three said cavities with their ends opposite to the handles. Said telescopically extendable support pole 9 is inserted into the remaining said cavity. Together with said telescopically extendable support pole 9 the trekking poles 13 form a stable base for the camera steadying device and a camera or smartphone mounted on it. (Figure 5)
Description
Portable steadying device for cameras and smartphones to operate in combination with trekking poles DESCRIPTION: The present invention relates to a camera steadying device and, more particularly, to a steadying device for photo cameras, video cameras and smartphones.
A conventional steadying device for cameras and smartphones, also referred to as a tripod is a stand with three legs that has a camera mount on top. Small and portable tripods typically do not allow to steadily position a camera at an appropriate height above the ground. Those tripods that do allow positioning at an appropriate height are typically large and heavy devices.
The objective of the present invention is to provide a camera steadying device that is lightweight and compact yet providing a user the advantages of a full-size tripod by steadily positioning a camera or smartphone at a convenient height.
In accordance with the present invention, a camera steadying device is provided, comprising a base member with three cavities, a telescopically extendable support pole rotatably and slidably inserted into one of said cavities, a yoke with a slot rotatably mounted on the base member, a bottom clamping member rotatably and slidably connected to the yoke, a top clamping member rotatably and slidably connected to the yoke, and a mounting screw rotatably and slidably mounted though said bottom clamping member, said yoke and said top clamping member.
In one embodiment of the present invention two trekking poles are used being inserted into the two of three said cavities with their ends opposite to the handles. Said support pole is inserted into the remaining said cavity. Together with said support pole the trekking poles form a stable base for the camera steadying device and a camera or smartphone mounted on it. In another embodiment of the present invention three trekking poles are used being inserted into the all three said cavities with their ends opposite to the handles. In this case said support pole is not used. Advantageously, the present invention uses two or three conventional trekking poles as supports. Many people have trekking poles with them while travelling alone or in a group. If only two trekking poles are present, one additional extendable support has two be used. If three trekking poles are available, the additional foldable support is not needed. The use of at least two trekking poles and lightweight construction of the camera mount makes the present invention a more compact, lightweight and convenient alternative to conventional tripods for people that travel with trekking poles.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the present invention showing cavities of the base member. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the present invention showing further components of the camera mounting member. Fig. 3 is a side view of the camera mounting member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the present invention with a telescopically extendable support pole. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the present invention operating with one telescopically extendable support pole, two conventional trekking poles and a camera. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the present invention operating with three conventional trekking poles and a camera. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the present invention showing an alternative orientation of the camera. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the present invention showing a variant with a smartphone clamp.
Fig. 9 is a side view of the present invention showing a cross-section of the cavity of the base member. Fig. 10 is a side view of the present invention showing a cross-section of the cavity of the base member and a conventional trekking pole inserted into it.
Fig. 11 is a side view of the present invention showing a cross-section of the cavity of the base member and a telescopically extendable support pole inserted into it. Fig. 12 1s a side view of the present invention showing a cross-section of the cavity of the base member and inserts.
In Fig. 1 the invention is shown comprising a base member 1 and a camera mounting member 3. The cavities 2 of said base member have an elongated. axially symmetric shape as shown in Fig9. A telescopically extendable support pole 9 is inserted in one of said cavities as shown in Fig.5 and Fig.11. Two conventional trekking poles 13 are inserted with their pointed ends into two of said cavities and held by friction as shown in Fig.5 and Fig.10. One telescopically extendable support pole 9 and two conventional trekking poles 13 form a stable structure when put on the ground as shown in Fig.5.
Said camera mounting member 3 further comprises a yoke 4 of substantially curved shape with a slot, a bottom clamping member 5 with an opening slidably and rotatably connected to said yoke, a top clamping member 6 with an opening slidably and rotatably connected to said yoke, a mounting screw 7 rotatably and slidably mounted through the openings of said bottom clamping member, the slot of said yoke and the opening of said top clamping member, and a retaining ring § mounted on said mounting screw, as shown in Fig.2 and Fig.3.
A camera 12 equipped with a standard threaded hole for tripods can be mounted on said camera mounting member by tightening said mounting screw into said standard threaded hole as shown in Fig.5.
Said camera can be oriented in different ways by rotating it around the axis of the said mounting screw and by sliding along said yoke of said camera mounting member. Fig.6 shows a way of orienting the camera vertically by sliding it to one side of the yoke. Said mounting screw, when tightened, fixes the position and the orientation of the camera at the same time.
Alternatively the invention can be used in combination with a smartphone clamp 11 equipped with a standard threaded hole for tripods as shown in Fig.8 to provide support to a smartphone.
In figure 9 a cross-section of the cavity 2 of the base member is shown and in figures 10-13 different embodiments of this cavity are shown.
In Fig. 10 a cross-section of the cavity 2 is shown with the end 14 of a conventional trekking pole 13 inserted into it.
In Fig. 11 a cross-section of the cavity 2 of the base member is shown with a telescopically extendable support pole 9 inserted into it.
In Fig. 12 a cross-section of the cavity 2 of the base member and ring-shaped rubber inserts 10 to hold a pole inserted into it.
