DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS FIG. 1 shows a network environment NE according to the present invention. The network environment NE comprises a variety of specific devices such as printers P1, P2, P3 and finishers F1, F2, F3. A computer 10 installed in the network environment NE comprises a display for displaying digital data, receiving means for receiving digital data, a central processing unit CPU for processing digital data and a digital storage 12 comprising a plurality of device models PDM, FDM for at least part of the specific devices P1, P2, P3, F1, F2, F3 residing in the network environment NE. A printing device model PDM is an executable modelling software package installed on a workstation for simulating printing and/or finishing actions of a printing device. A finishing device model FDM is an executable modelling software package installed on a workstation for simulating finishing actions of a finishing device. The finisher may be an on-line, near-line or off-line finisher.
For example, the finishers F1, F2 are on-line or near-line, while the finisher F3 is an off-line finisher.
Even a finishing device model for the off-line finishing device F3 may be available.
All devices except the off-line finisher F3 are connected via a digital network N in the network environment NE.
The receiving 5 means may be an input/output connector like an I/O port.
The template definition software tool DT according to the present invention has been installed in the storage 12 on the computer 10 and the application templates AT defined according to the method of the present invention may also be stored in the storage 12 on the computer 10. However, other computers like another computer 14 residing in the network environment NE or residing in a cloud storage which is connected to the network environment NE may be involved to store the defined application templates AT and/or at least part of the device models PDM, FDM.
The computer 10 also comprises a user interface UI for receiving digital data via user input.
The user interface Ul is configured to display text and images on the display to the user or operator.
The application creation software tool CT is installed on the workstation 14. However, the application creation software tool CT may be installed on an arbitrary workstation connected in the network environment NE.
For example, a first printing device model PDM is configured to simulate the printer P1. The first printing device model PDM comprises a plurality of printing and finishing parameters.
The printing parameters of the printing device model PDM determine the printing process to be executed by the printer P1 and the finishing parameters of the printing device model PDM determine a possible in-line finishing process to be executed by the printer P1 such as stapling or folding.
For example, a first finishing device model FDM is configured to simulate the finisher
F1. The first finishing device model FDM comprises a plurality of finishing parameters.
The finishing parameters of the finishing device model FDM determine the finishing process to be executed by the finisher F1. For each printing device P1, P2, P3 in the network environment NE suitable for production of a selected application a first set of printing parameters PPi and/or a second set of finishing parameters FPP6 dedicated to the selected application are retrieved from the corresponding printing device model PDM.
The retrieved parameters and parameter values are gathered in a first table 21 shown in FIG. 2A.
For each finishing device F1, F2 in the network environment NE suitable for production of the selected application a third set of finishing parameters FPi dedicated to the selected application are retrieved from the corresponding finishing device model FDM.
For the off-line finishing device F3 suitable for production of the selected application a fourth set of finishing parameters dedicated to the selected application is retrieved from the corresponding finishing device model FDM.
The retrieved parameters and parameter values are gathered in a second table 22 shown in FIG. 2B.
FIG. 2A shows the first table 21 comprising the printing parameters PPi, allowed value ranges V for the printing parameters PPi and finishing parameter FPP6 with respect to printer P1 and P2, and allowed values for the printing parameters PPi and the finishing parameter FPP6 when the selected application is taken into account.
For convenience reasons, columns for the other printers in the network environment NE are left out.
The allowed ranges V for the printing parameters PPi and the finishing parameter FPP8, and the allowed values for the selection are retrieved from the printing device models PDM.
For each printing device the corresponding printing parameters PPi and finishing parameter FPP6 can be split into a first group U and a second group X.
The printing parameters PP1, PP2 of the first group U each have more than one suitable values V1a, V1b and V2a, V2b, V2c respectively.
The printing parameters PP3, PP4 of the first group U have a value V3c, V4a respectively which is uniquely determined for the selected application.
For example, for the printing parameter PP3 a parameter value V3c is uniquely determined if the selected application is desired to be produced.
Clearly the printer P2 is suitable to produce the application with respect to the parameter PP3 since the parameter value V3c is contained in the range V3d — V3c which is defined for printer P2. If the parameter value V3c is contained in the range V3a — V3b which is defined for printer P1, then printer P1 is also suitable to produce the application with respect to the parameter PP3. If the parameter value V3c is not contained in the range V3a — V3b which is defined for printer P1, then printer P1 is not suitable to produce the application with respect to the parameter PP3. Each printing parameter of the second group X of parameters PP5, FPP6 with respect to the selected application is only limited by the parameter value ranges determined for each printer P1, P2. The parameter values for each printing parameter of the second group X may be entered by the user via a user interface of the application creation software tool CT. In order to let an application be well produced by a specific printer all parameter values defined for the selected application in the first table 21 must be comprised in the parameter value ranges of the specific printer.
FIG. 2B shows the second table 22 comprising the finishing parameters FPi, allowed value ranges T for the finishing parameters FPi with respect to finisher F1 and F3, and allowed values for the finishing parameters FPi when the selected application is taken into account. For convenience reasons, columns for the other finishers in the network environment NE are left out.
For each finishing device the corresponding finishing parameters FPi can be split into a first group W and a second group Y.
Each finishing parameter of the first group W of finishing parameters FP1 — FP4 has values which are determined by the selected application. For example, for the finishing parameter FP1 a parameter value T1a is uniquely determined if the selected application is desired to be produced. Clearly the finishers F1 and F3 are suitable to produce the application with respect to the parameter FP1 since the parameter value T1a is contained in the range T1a — T1b which is defined for finisher F1 and in the range T1a — T1c which is defined for finisher F3.
Each finishing parameter of the second group Y of finishing parameters FP5, FP6 with respect to the selected application is only limited by the parameter value ranges determined for each finisher F1, F3. The parameter values for each finishing parameter of the second group Y may be entered by the user via a user interface of the application creation software tool CT.
In order to let an application be well produced by a specific finisher, i.e. post-processed by the specific finisher, all parameter values defined for the selected application in the second table 22 must be comprised in the parameter value ranges of the specific finisher.
When defining an application template for the application by means of the template definition tool DT the retrieved printing and finishing parameters of the first table 21 and the second table 22 respectively are taken into account.
The template definition tool DT may not show the uniquely determined values V3c, V4a of the subset U of the retrieved printing parameters shown in the first table 21 and the uniquely determined values T3e, T4e for the subset W of the retrieved finishing parameters shown in the second table 22. The template definition tool DT shows the entries for the printing and finishing parameters PP1, PP2, PP5, FPP6, FP2, FP2, FP5, FP6 for entering user desired values in order to limit the values even further.
When the user has selected a unique value for each of the printing parameters PP1, PP2 and the finishing parameter FP2 the template is in principle well-defined for the selected application.
The user may even select unique values for PP5, FPPB6, FP5 and FPB6, but this is not obligatory.
Entries for user input of values of parameters of the subsets X and Y are created in the template under construction.
The entries are suitable for entering user desired values when the application template is used in the application creation software tool CT.
By doing so, the application template is defined in such a way that, when the defined application template is selected in the application creation software tool CT, no or a bare minimum of values for parameters have to be entered by the user.
FIG. 3 shows a user interface window 300 of the template definition software tool DT.
The user interface window 300 is used for defining an application template for an application according to the present invention.
Three applications are presented e.g. a booklet application, a leaflet application and a banner application.
In an alternative embodiment the user interface window comprises a selection list of applications and the user may select the applications one by one from the selection list in order to produce a corresponding application template.
A printing parameter for the booklet application is a size of the booklet.
When defining the application template for the booklet, the user can select a paper size, e.g.
A4, AS.
The size A4 is selected in this example.
The values A4, A5 of the printing parameter corresponding to the size of the booklet are determined for example by the values ranges V in the subset X of the suitable printers shown in FIG. 2A.
In this example, the size of the booklet corresponds for example to the printing parameter PP1 in table 21 in FIG. 2A.
The values V1a, V1b of the printing parameter PP1 correspond to the sizes A4, A5 respectively.
As shown in FIG. 3, the user has selected the A4 size for defining the template for the booklet application by limiting the possible values A4, AS to one unique size, namely A4. A printing parameter for the leaflet application is a size of the cover and a size of the inlet. Therefore the user can select two sizes, e.g. a first pair A5 and A4, a second pair of A5 and A3, and a third pair of A4 and A3 out of three available sizes A3, A4, A5. The values A3, A4, A5 of the printing parameter corresponding to the size of the cover and the inlet of the leaflet are determined for example by the values ranges V in the subset X of the suitable printers shown in FIG. 2A. In this example, the sizes of the cover and the inlet of the booklet corresponds for example to the printing parameter PP2 in table 21in FIG. 2A. The values V2a, V2b, V2c of the printing parameter PP2 correspond to the sizes A3, A4, A5 respectively. As shown in FIG. 3, the user has selected the third pair of A3 and A4 sizes for defining the template for the leaflet application and by doing so, has limited the values for the sizes of the cover and inlet.
The value of the size of the cover may also be determined by a value range of a suitable finisher - like a folder — which may be envisioned in table 22 in FIG. 2B. A printing parameter for the banner application is a length of a sheet which has to be cut off from a roll. The user can select a default length value of 1300 mm or he can select and/or enter a specific value which deviates from the default length. The default length of 1300 mm is selected in this example. The length of 1300 mm or any other selected and/or entered length are determined by the ranges V in the subset X of the suitable printers shown in FIG. 2A. In this example, the length of the banner corresponds for example to the printing parameter PPS in table 21 in FIG. 2A. The value to be entered must be included in the value range V5a — V5b. For example value of V5a may be the length of 1300 mm. As shown in FIG. 3, the user has selected the default length of 1300 mm for defining the template for the banner application by limiting the value to one unique length 1300 mm. If the user selects the selection list 34 the banner template will be defined accordingly and will be provided with an entry box for the selection list. The values provided in the selection list must be comprised in the value range V5a — V5b for the parameter PP5 shown in table 21 of FIG. 2A.
The selected parameter values for one or more applications may be saved and stored in storage of the network environment NE, for example the storage of the computer 10 on which the template definition software tool DT has been installed. In order to save the selected parameter values in user interface window 300 in FIG. 3, a save button 32 may be pressed or the selected parameter values may be real-time saved.
FIG. 4 shows a user interface window 400 of the application creation software tool CT installed on the computer 14 in the network environment NE according to the present invention. In this example the application creation software tool is a print job submission tool. Several settings of the new print job may be selected and entered such as name of the print job, number of copies, etc. Also a preview image 44 of the print job is shown. An application template may be selected from a dropdown box 43. The application creation software tool CT retrieves the available and defined application templates from storage in the network environment NE where the templates defined by the template definition software tool DT are stored. The preview image 44 may be adapted when another application template is selected from the dropdown box 43.
The print job may be submitted to a printing device by pressing the print button 42. The name of the application template may comprise the name of the application (“Booklet”) and the name (“A4”) of at least one of the values of a printing or finishing parameter retrieved from the defined application template for the application. In this example the name of the selected application template is “Booklet A4”. Other examples are “Leaflet A3-A4”, “Banner 1300”, “Banner”, “Banner Printer 17, etc.
The user interface window 400 may also be part of a printer driver installed on a computer or workstation in the network environment NE.
FIG. 5 is a flow diagram of a first method according to the present invention. The method is suitable for enhancing the template definition software tool DT with application templates according to the present invention.
The method starts in a starting point A which leads to a first step S1.
Inthe first step S1 a user selection of an application to be printed and/or finished is received. The user selection may be a user selection from a list of applications. The list of applications contains only applications which can be created by means of the printing devices and the finishing devices installed in the network environment or off-line devices of which a finishing device model is present. The list may be automatically updated when a new device is installed based on a signal search for hardware on the network environment, for example by means of a network discovery software tool. In a second step S2 for each printing device in the network environment suitable for production of the selected application, a first set of printing parameters and a second set of finishing parameters dedicated to the selected application are retrieved from the corresponding printing device model. The second set concerns finishing parameters for in-line finishing of the application by the printing device. In a third step S3 for each finishing device in the network environment suitable for production of the selected application, a third set of finishing parameters dedicated to the selected application is retrieving from the corresponding finishing device model.
In a fourth step S4 for each off-line finishing device suitable for production of the selected application, a fourth set of finishing parameters dedicated to the selected application is retrieved from the corresponding finishing device model.
In a fifth step S5 an application template is defined for the application taking the retrieved printing and finishing parameters of the first, second, third and fourth set into account. Further by means of the user interface of the template definition tool DT limiting values are received for limiting at least subset of the retrieved printing and finishing parameters of the first, second, third and fourth set and for creating entries for another subset of the retrieved printing and finishing parameters of the first, second, third and fourth set for entering user desired values when the application template is used to prepare the application by the application creation software tool CT.
In a sixth step S6 the defined application template is saved or stored in digital storage in the network environment.
FIG. 6 is a flow diagram of a second method according to the present invention. The method is suitable for use of application templates defined according to the present invention in the application creation software tool CT according to the present invention. The method starts in a starting point C which leads to a first step T1.
In the first step T1 the application creation software tool CT is opened.
In a second step T2 the application creation software tool CT retrieves the defined application templates from the digital storage in the network environment. In a third step T3 the application creation software tool CT makes the retrieved application templates available for use in the application creation software tool CT. The application creation software tool CT comprises a user interface window comprising a selection list which lists the retrieved application templates. The method ends in an end point D. The template definition software tool DT as well as the application creation software tool CT according to the present invention may also have a remote user interface in a cloud environment. According to an embodiment the template definition software tool DT is located in the cloud environment. According to another embodiment the template definition software tool DT as well as the application creation software tool CT according to the present invention are residing in the network environment NE while only the printing and finishing device models PDM, FDM are located in the cloud environment.
