Description
Method for accommodating a room to an individual who is diagnosed with a neurological disorder, system for accommodating a room to an individual who is diagnosed with a neurological disorder, and use of such a system The present invention relates according to a first aspect, to a method for accommodating a room to an individual who is diagnosed with a neurological disorder. In a second aspect, the invention relates to a system that is useful for such a method, and in a third aspect to a corresponding use of such a system.
It has been established that individuals who are diagnosed with a neurological disorder, may benefit from being in an environment which stimulates their neurological systems in a positive way by the presence of personal stimuli. Within the context of the present invention, the neurological disorder of the individual may be of various types and of different severity, and may include a mental illness and/or cognitive disorder such as depression, dementia, Parkinson's disease, or traumatic brain damage. In the field of professional care that is to be given to such individuals, it is therefore interesting to provide an environment or room, which can be accommodated to the specific personal stimuli for the individual that makes use of the room. The specific personal stimuli may encompass any stimulus to the senses, i.e. vision, hearing, touch, smell and taste. These stimuli may be provided by several adaptable devices that are present in the room. In this way, the individual may for instance experience a more challenging stimulus for the brain and mind, which contributes to the well-being of the individual. Furthermore, the individual may have a counselling session in the room with for instance a psychologist or a para-medical professional, which session can be more effective once the room is adapted to provide the personal stimuli that are known to be positive to the individual. Because of its comforting effect on the individual, the accommodated room may also be referred to as ‘a comfort room’. The comfort room may also be useful for the individual as a meeting room for interaction with friends and/or relatives.
In order to provide such a comfort room in the setting of a hospital, a community center, or a practice of a counsellor, it is necessary that the room can be accommodated swiftly and expediently in order to be practically useful for a succession of different individuals that separately and successively want to make use of the room. In order to achieve the above objective, the invention provides a method for accommodating a room to an individual who is diagnosed with a neurological disorder, which method uses a computer-implemented system and comprises the steps of: a. providing a room which comprises one or more adaptable devices which are controllable by the system, b. storing in a database of the system, of personal records of individuals who are diagnosed with a neurological disorder, «c. allowing the system to identify the individual who will make use of the room, d. allowing the system to access the database and to select from the database the personal record of the individual that corresponds with the individual that has been identified by the system in step c., e. allowing the system to adapt one or more devices in the room on the basis of the selected personal record obtained in step d..
In practice, a supervisor such as for instance a medical doctor or para-medical professional, will be responsible for operating the computer-implemented system that accommodates the room. The supervisor may for example decide when the individual can use the room.
Furthermore, the supervisor is responsible for storing a specific personal record of an individual in the database of the system. The supervisor may for instance base the personal record on a personal questionnaire that has been filled out during an initial interview by the supervisor with the individual. The personal record will be based on individual preferences of the individual that co-relate to specific stimuli that are required to accommodate the comfort room to the individual. The specific stimuli may for instance be related to long-term memories of the individual, in order to trigger these.
it is preferred in the method according to the invention, that the individual is allowed to enter the room on the condition that the room has been accommodated to the individual, and wherein preferably the system checks whether this condition is fulfilled, and wherein optionally entry into the room is controlled by the system.
As such, the method avoids that an individual could enter the room while incorrect stimuli are provided to the individual. The system may furthermore control entry into the room by locking and unlocking of a door to the room. lt is further preferred that the room is automatically locked by the system after an individual has used the room and left it.
It is furthermore preferred that in the method according to the invention at least the steps c., d., and e. are repeated each time that separately and successively an individual makes use of the room.
In the method according to the invention, the personal record of an individual preferably comprises a string for a unique identity code of the individual, and a string containing various personal stimuli for the individual.
Such a personal record allows for verification of the individual, as well as for a specific controlling of adaptable devices in the room. In this context, the string may also be referred to as a variable which specific for an individual person. it is preferred in the method according to the invention, that the system reads the personal record of the individual and consequently emits one or more control signals for one or more adaptable devices in the room, so that the devices are adapted on the basis of the selected personal record.
More specifically, the system is configured to interpret the personal record of the individual (in particular a string of personal stimuli for the individual), and to consequently select one or more corresponding control signals for one or more adaptable devices in the room. To that goal, the system uses specific software which is developed to interpret the personal record of the individual in order to select the correct control signals that correspond with the personal record.
In the method of the invention, it is preferred that one or more adaptable devices in the room are chosen from a group which comprises:
- Lighting devices, which are for instance adaptable both in colour and intensity; - Curtains, for instance window curtains providing an optimum balance of shadow and incident light; - Monitors for showing pictures and/or videos, - Speakers providing sound, for example natural sounds or music, - Fragrance dispensers for providing a specific smell in the room, - Climate controllers for controlling temperature and humidity in the room. Further preferred in the method according to the invention, the system has a (graphical) user interface which is user-friendly, and preferably of an intuitive design. The method according to the invention, may comprise in step e. that the system further provides an indicator to a personal box of the individual, which personal box contains physical objects.
These physical objects may further stimulate the touch senses of the individual, trigger long-term memories, and/or offer comfort to the individual. The supervisor and/or the individual may select one or more physical objects from the box, to be available in the room for the individual.
In particular it is preferred that the system allows a supervisor and/or the individual to access the personal box once their identity is verified. it is preferred in regard of step b. of the method according to the invention that a personal record of an individual is entered and stored in the database by a supervisor who is authorized to do so. Generally it is preferred that the method according to the invention comprises a verification step wherein the system verifies whether a person is authorized to operate the system, before the person is allowed to operate the system. For security reasons, it is preferred that in step c. of the method according to one of the preceding claims, the individual is identified by a supervisor who enters the identity of the individual in the system.
Alternatively, in step c. the individual may identify himself or herself based on a personal code which has been provided by the supervisor, which code optionally authorizes the individual for allowing the system to perform steps ¢., d. and e.. 5 Furthermore, the method according to the invention may comprise an additional adjusting step of the adaptable devices in the room by the supervisor and/or the individual when the room is used by the individual. When the room is used by the individual, it may be helpful to the individual to further fine-tune the adaptable devices in the room, which can be achieved by such an adjusting step, for instance by use of a remote control that is available in the room, and which remote contro! allows to operate the system. According to a second aspect of the invention, a system is provided for accommodating a room to an individual who is diagnosed with a neurological disorder, which system is computer-implemented and comprises: - a database for storing personal records of individuals who are diagnosed with a neurological disorder, - an identification module which is configured to identify the individual who will make use of the room, - a selection module which is configured to select the personal record of the individual that will make use of the room, - a controlling module which is configured to adapt one or more adaptable devices in the room on the basis of a selected personal record.
Such a system accomplishes the advantages that have already been explained above, i.e. it allows to accommodate a comfort room to an individual in a swift and expedient way. The various modules that are mentioned in this context, may be based on specific software and/or hardware that is part of the computer-implemented system. it is preferred that the system according to the invention, comprises a verification module which is configured to verify that a person is authorized for operating the system, and which is configured to allow the authorized person to operate the system, subsequent to a positive verification.
It is further preferred that the system according to the invention includes a remote control that can be used in the room for further adjustment of the adaptable devices in the room.
it is particularly preferred that the system according to the invention includes a monitoring module which checks the accommodated status of the room, and which optionally controls the entry to the room. As such, the system helps to avoid that an individual enters the room while the room is not yet accommodated to the specific individual. it is further preferred that the system according to the invention includes an indicator module for indicating a personal box of the individual, which personal box contains physical objects.
A third aspect of the invention, relates to the practical use of a system according to second aspect of the invention, in performing the method according to first aspect of the invention. Accordingly, the practical use accomplishes the advantages that have already been explained above, i.e. the accommodation of a comfort room to an individual in a swift and expedient way. Example The invention will be further elucidated with reference to an example which is depicted in the appended drawings, wherein: - Fig. 1 shows a schematic image of the computer-implemented system according to a preferred embodiment of the invention; - Fig. 2 shows a comfort room that can be accommodated in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention. Figure 1 shows a schematic image of the computer-implemented system 1 that is electronically connected to comfort room 20. A user of the system 1, interacts with the system via interface IF, which may comprise a keyboard and a monitor. In order to use the system, the user interacts with a verification module VF which is configured to verify that a person is authorized for operating the system, and which is configured to allow the authorized person to operate the system, subsequent to a positive verification.
Once the verification is established, the user interacts with an identification module ID which is configured to identify the individual who will make use of the room. Corresponding to the identification of the individual that will make use of the room, the system interacts with a selection module SM which is configured to select the personal record of the individual that will make use of the room. The selection is made from a database DB in which personal records are stored of individuals who are diagnosed with a neurological disorder. The user may enter these personal records in the database DB via the interface IF.
The personal record selected by the selection module SM is subsequently transmitted to a controlling module CM which is configured to adapt one or more adaptable devices in the room 20 on the basis of a selected personal record. The system 1 further includes a monitoring module MO which checks the accommodated status of the room 20, and which optionally controls the entry 22 to the room.
Figure 2 shows a comfort room 20 that can be accommodated by a computer- implemented system 1 as depicted in fig. 1. The room 20 is provided with adaptable devices such as: - Lighting devices 26, - Curtains 25, - Monitors 27 showing pictures and/or videos, - Speakers providing sound (integrated in monitor 27), such as natural sounds or music, - Fragrance dispensers 29 for providing a specific smell in the room, - Climate controllers (not visible) for controlling temperature and humidity in the room.
A remote control 30 is available in the room, which control can be used for further adjustment of the above described adaptable devices 25-29 that are present in the room 20.
