Abstract

A system for restoring the faculties of tasting and/or smelling to a person without larynx, comprising a tube system tailored for placement at a side or sides of the person's head and that said tube system comprises at a first end a trachea adapter for connection to a trachea hole of the person, and that the tube system is at a second end distant from the first end provided with an adapter or adapters for placement in the mouth and/or the nose of the person.

Description

A system for restoring the faculties of tasting and/or smell- ing to a person without larynx The invention relates to a system for restoring the faculties of tasting and/or smelling to a person without lar- ynx, When a person misses his or hers larynx, the faculties of tasting and/or smelling are tremendously impaired, to a level that most of the time the sensations of tasting and smelling do no longer exist.
The invention has as an object to restore these facul- ties of tasting and/or smelling, and proposes to that end the system provided with features according to one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect the system comprises a tube system tailored for placement at a side or sides of the person’s head and that said tube system comprises at a first end a trachea adapter for connection to a trachea hole of the person, and that the tube system is at a second end distant from the first end provided with an adapter or adapters for placement in the mouth and/or the nose of the person.
Preferably both options are applied, wherein the tube system comprises a first tube or tubes connected or connecta- ble through the trachea adapter to the trachea hole and which is provided with a mouth adapter for placement in the mouth of the person, and comprises a second tube or tubes through the trachea adapter connected to or connectable to the trachea hole and provided with a nose adapter for placement in the nose of the person.
With the first tube that is connected or connectable to the trachea hole and the mouth of the person, respiration via the mouth and through the nose is again possible, which restores the faculty of smell.
With the second tube connected to or connectable to the trachea hole and the nose of the person, respiration will cause the airstream to pass along taste and smell papillae in mouth and nose, which will restore the faculties of taste and smell.
In order to promote practical use in day-to-day life it is preferred that the one or more tubes of the system are configured to be suspended at the side of the person’s head and to extend from the person's frontal face towards the ear or ears.
Wherein the system plural tubes, it is preferred that said tubes are arranged at opposite sides of the person’s head.
Preferably the tubes are of a suitable plastic and sufficiently lightweight, wherein the plastic should satisfy the requirements of medical equipment considering the applica- tion by a person without larynx.
Another advantage of the system of the invention is that the respiratory system including the lungs are used in a more natural way, instead of inhaling and exhaling through the trachea hole.
Suitably the tube or tubes are suspended from the per- son’s ear or ears with an ear connector.
It is further preferred that the tube or tubes of the tube system have a rectangular shape to arrange that they can be flatly arranged at the side or sides of the persons head.
Further it 1s advantageous that the tube or tubes of the tube system are flexible and at least in part extendable so as to enable that tube or tubes can be tailored to the di- mensions of the persons head.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of a system according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: —-figure 1 shows a view at a prototype drawing of the system of the invention on a dummy head in a first side view; ~figure 2 shows a view at a prototype drawing of the system of the invention on a dummy head in a second side view; —figure 3 shows a frontal view at the dummy head and the system of the invention; -figure 4 shows the placement of the trachea adapter; ~figure 5 provides a view at the mouth adapter; and “figure 6 shows the placement of the nose adapter.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals 40 are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Figure 1 shows the right hand side of a dummy head, with a view at a first tube 2 that is provided with a trachea adapter 1. Figure 4 provides a clear view at the trachea adapter 1. The first tube 2 is shown at the right hand side of the dummy head but a similar tube is to be arranged at the left-hand side of the dummy head. The tube 2 extends from the trachea hole towards the ear where it can be suspended with an ear connector 5, and then passes on in a bend towards the oth- er end of the tube 2 distant from the trachea hole adapter 1, at which distant end a mouth adapter 3 is provided for place- ment in the mouth of the dummy. A view at the mouth adapter is provided in figure 5.
It is shown that in the transition bend of the tube 2, said tube is flexible and extendable so as to arrange for dif- ferent dimensions of the dummy head. The tube 2 is further flat and shallow so as to arrange that it can easily be placed against the side of the head.
In figure 2 the tube 2 is shown at the left hand side of the dummy head. The tube 2 is shown at the left hand side of the dummy head but a similar tube is to be arranged at the right hand side of the dummy head. The tube 2 again extends from the trachea hole towards the ear where it can be suspend- ed with an ear connector 5, and then passes on in a bend to- wards the other end of the tube 2 distant from the trachea hole adapter 1, at which distant end a nose adapter 4 is pro- vided for placement in the nose of the dummy. A view at the placement of the nose adapter in the nose is provided by fig- ure 6.
