Description

P34303NLO0/MLI Title: Fire extinguish bottle cap
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a fire extinguish bottle cap configured to be mounted on a neck portion of a bottle containing a carbonated beverage. The invention further relates to an assembly for extinguishing a fire. The invention yet further relates to a method of extinguishing a fire. The invention further relates to a use of a fire extinguish bottle cap and to a use of an assembly for extinguishing a fire.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Fires can lead to a loss of property, pain for a person in the form of burns or in a worst case death. In order to prevent fires from escalating it is recommended to have a fire extinguisher present in every building. That way, fires can be extinguished in an early stage. Regular fire extinguishers have several disadvantages. They are expensive. They have a limited expiration date. After said expiration date the fire extinguisher will have to be replaced or refilled because the fluid inside the fire extinguisher has become of less quality. The fire extinguishers people usually have in their homes are small. This has the effect that those fire extinguishers have a limited spraying time. A normal foam based fire extinguisher of 8 liter has a spraying time of about 40 seconds. A smaller 2 liter foam based fire extinguisher has a spraying time of 15 seconds. Furthermore, the 8 liter extinguisher weighs about 10 kg. Such a weight is considered heavy and inconvenient for a user.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a fire extinguisher which is more convenient for the user while having a long spraying time.
2.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a fire extinguisher which is easy to handle.
It is yet a further object of the invention to provide a cost efficient fire extinguisher.
It is another object of the invention to provide a fire extinguisher which is easy to manufacture.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In order to achieve at least one object, the invention provides a fire extinguish bottle cap configured to be mounted on a neck portion of a bottle containing a carbonated beverage, wherein the bottle cap comprises: e a main body comprising: o a side wall comprising an inner side, an outer side, a first end and a second end, the side wall having a wall height between the first end and the second end, wherein the side wall defines an internal volume, wherein the first end is open and configured to be mounted with a connection opening thereof over a mounting height on the neck portion of the bottle, wherein the second end is closed by a top wall, o a through hole provided in the side wall at a hole height from the first end, wherein the hole height is greater than the mounting height, and wherein the through hole is configured to be in fluid communication with an internal volume of the bottle when the bottle cap is mounted on the neck portion thereof, o a channel connecting the connection opening with the through hole, wherein the channel is configured to guide the carbonated beverage from the open first end to the through hole, co a mounting member for mounting the bottle cap on the neck portion of the bottle, the mounting member being provided on the inner side of the side wall at the first end thereof, e an indicator for indicating a location of the through hole. The fire extinguisher bottle cap allows a bottle with a carbonated beverage to be transformed to a fire extinguisher. Said fire extinguisher is more convenient than a normal foam based fire extinguisher, because usually a bottle with carbonated beverage weighs no more than 2 kg. Hence the fire extinguisher is easy to handle. A household usually has a
23. maximum of one regular fire extinguisher, often even none, while generally having multiple bottles containing a carbonated beverage. It was found that the spraying time of a 1.5 liter bottle filled with a carbonated beverage lies between 50-60 seconds. The carbonic acid in the beverage provides pressure for spraying the beverage over a distance of several meters. By shaking the bottle the pressure inside the bottle is increased, resulting in a stronger spray of the beverage out of the through hole. Hence, the bottle cap provides a fire extinguisher which is more convenient while having a long spraying time.
The material inside regular fire extinguishers tends to be detrimental to electronics when used in a room containing electronic devices. A carbonated beverage is less detrimental to said electronics. The bottle cap provides a simple construction which is easy to manufacture. The bottle cap is also cheap to manufacture, hence providing a cost efficient fire extinguisher. The bottle cap is reusable. After a first bottle is emptied, the bottle cap can be dismounted from the first bottle and be mounted on a second bottle. After the bottle cap is used and dismounted from a bottle, it can be stored efficiently in for example a drawer of a kitchen. When mounting the bottle cap on a bottle, it is desirable that the user immediately sprays in the right direction, i.e. towards the fire. Therefore the bottle cap is provided with an indicator for indicating the location of the through hole. When the user knows the location of the through hole, he or she is immediately able to spray the carbonated beverage in the right direction. In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the indicator comprises a protrusion connected to and extending away from the side wall, wherein the protrusion forms a nozzle, the through hole being provided in an end surface of the protrusion and extending through the protrusion towards the internal volume of the bottle cap. An advantage of the protrusion is that the person can see and feel the protrusion and thereby indicate the location of the through hole. The bottle cap with protrusion is easy to manufacture.
-4- In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the main body is an integral element or wherein the bottle cap is an integral element.
An integrally made main body or bottle cap is beneficial from a manufacturing point of view. Also for the user a single piece bottle cap is beneficial, as he or she only has to mount the bottle cap on the bottle without having to think about performing additional steps as would be the case with a bottle cap having multiple interconnected parts. This way a convenient, easy to handle fire extinguisher is provided.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the connection opening of the first end has an opening diameter, wherein the channel has a channel diameter, and wherein the through hole has a hole diameter, wherein the channel diameter is smaller than the opening diameter, and/or wherein the hole diameter is smaller than the channel diameter.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the through hole diameter is 3mm or less, preferably 2 mm or less.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, multiple through holes are provided.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the cross-section of the through hole has a circular shape, an oval shape, or a rectangular shape.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, a cross-sectional area of the through hole lies between 2-10 mm.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, an opening end of the channel adjacent the connection opening has a diameter substantially equal to the opening diameter, wherein a hole end of the channel adjacent the through hole has a diameter substantially equal to the hole diameter, and wherein the diameter of the channel gradually decreases from the opening diameter to the hole diameter.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, a central axis of the through hole extends substantially perpendicular to a tangent line of the connection opening. This way, the beverage exits the bottle cap radially outwardly with respect to the bottle to which the bottle cap is mounted.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the mounting member is an inner thread provided on the inner side of the side wall, wherein the bottle cap is configured to be
5.
screwed on corresponding outer thread provided on the neck portion of the bottle via said inner thread.
The inner thread is beneficial, because most bottles have a neck portion comprising outer thread on which a regular bottle cap is screwed. The user only has to screw off the regular bottle cap and screw on the fire extinguish bottle cap according to the invention in order to provide a fire extinguisher.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the outer side of the side wall comprises a textured surface or wherein the outer side is provided with a surface having a high frictional coefficient, such as a natural or synthetic rubber.
An advantage of the textured surface or the highly frictional surface is better grip for the user to mount the fire extinguish bottle cap on the bottle.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, in bottom view and/or top view the outer side of the side wall defines a polygon. The polygon shape provides better grip for the user to mount the fire extinguish bottle cap on the bottle.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, a side of the polygon corresponding to the through hole is provided with a textured surface, wherein the textured surface is the indicator for indicating the location of the through hole.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the bottle cap is made from plastic.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the bottle cap is manufactured by injection moulding. This is a cheap way of manufacturing the bottle cap. In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the bottle cap has a bright colour, such as yellow or red. This way the fire extinguish bottle cap can be better identified by the user.
In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, an outer surface of the bottle cap is fluorescent. This way the fire extinguish bottle cap can be better identified by the user, in particular when it is dark, as the fluorescent feature is a glow in the dark feature.
-6- In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the bottle cap comprises a magnet. The magnet allows the bottle cap to be provided on for example a fridge for easy storage while allowing the bottle cap to be collected quickly. In an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap, the top wall is flat, wherein the bottle cap is configured to rest on the top wall when mounted on the bottle.
The invention further relates to an assembly for extinguishing a fire, the assembly comprising: e a bottle containing a carbonated beverage, the bottle having an opening, wherein a neck portion extends from said opening over a neck height, e a fire extinguishing bottle cap according to the invention, wherein the fire extinguishing bottle cap is mounted on the neck portion of the bottle, wherein the through hole of the main body extends beyond the free end of the neck portion of the bottle.
The assembly relates to the same advantages as the fire extinguish bottle cap.
The invention further relates to a method of extinguishing a fire, the method comprising: a) providing a bottle containing a carbonated beverage, the bottle comprising an opening and a neck portion extending from the opening, b) mounting a bottle cap according to the invention on the neck portion of the bottle, wherein the through hole of the main body extends beyond the free end of the neck portion of the bottle, c) flipping the bottle upside down, d) allowing the carbonated beverage to exit the bottle and flow through the bottle cap, thereby spraying the beverage via the through hole.
The invention further relates to a use of a fire extinguish bottle cap according to the invention in combination with a bottle containing a carbonated beverage for extinguishing a fire.
The invention yet further relates to a use of an assembly according to the invention for extinguishing a fire.
-7- These and other aspects of the invention will be more readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description and considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference symbols designate like parts.

The main body 6 has a side wall 7 comprising an inner side 8, an outer side 9, a first end 10 and a second end 11. The side wall 7 defines a wall height 12 (figure 6) between the first end 10 and the second end 11. The side wall 7 further defines an internal volume 13. The first end 10 is open and mounted with a connection opening 14 thereof over a mounting height 15 on the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3. The mounting height 15 corresponds, i.e. is substantially equal, to the neck height 5 of the neck portion 2. The second end 11 is closed by a top wall 16.
-8- The top wall 16 is flat for the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 to rest on the top wall 16. When the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 is connected to the bottle 3 an assembly 100 can rest on the top wall 16.
A through hole 17 is provided in the side wall 7 at a hole height 18 (figure 6) from the first end 10. The hole height 18 is greater than the mounting height 15. This way the through hole 17 extends beyond a free end 19 of the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3 when the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 is mounted on the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3. The through hole 17 is in fluid communication with an internal volume 20 of the bottle 3 when the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 is mounted on the neck portion 2 thereof.
In case multiple through holes 17 are provided, the through holes 17 extend from the channel in substantially the same direction, i.e. not in substantially opposed directions such that two through holes are diametrically opposed.
A channel 21 in the main body 6 connects the connection opening 14 with the through hole 17. The channel 21 is configured to guide the carbonated beverage from the open first end 10 to the through hole 17.
The channel 21 is provided downstream of the open first end 10. The through hole 17 is provided downstream of the channel 21.

The inner thread 38 extends over the mounting height 15.
The main body 6 is an integral element. This provides a robust construction which is easy to handle for the user.
The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 comprises an indicator 23 for indicating a location 24 of the through hole 17.
-9- The indicator 23 may comprise a protrusion 25 connected to the side wall 7. The protrusion 25 extends away from the side wall 7. The protrusion 25 forms a nozzle 26, wherein the through hole 17 is provided in an end surface 27 of the protrusion 25. The through hole 17 extends from the end surface 27 of the protrusion 25 towards the internal volume 13 of the fire extinguish bottle cap 1.
Next to indicating the location of the through hole 17, the protrusion 25 also indicates a direction of the through hole, in particular a spraying direction.
The outer side 9 of the side wall 7 may comprise a textured surface 40 or the outer side 9 is provided with a surface having a high frictional coefficient, such as a natural or synthetic rubber.
Turning to figures 1 and 3, the outer side 9 of the side wall 7 defines a polygon 42 in top view and/or in bottom view. The embodiment of figure 3 depicts a polygon 42 with eight sides. Shapes other than a polygon 42 are also possible, for example a cylindrical shape, or an oval shape.
A side 43 of the polygon 42 corresponding to the through hole 17, i.e. the side through which the through hole 17 extends, is provided with a textured surface 40. The textured surface 40 is the indicator 23 for indicating the location 24 of the through hole 17.
A central axis 36 of the through hole 17 extends substantially perpendicular to a tangent line 37 of the connection opening 14.
The through hole 17 extends perpendicular to a longitudinal axis 50 of the bottle cap
1. The connection opening 14 has a centre 49. The through hole 17 extends radially outwards relative to said centre 49. Turning to figures 4 and 5, the through hole 17 may have a length 48 of at least 5-15 mm. The length 48 provides a controlled spray that more closely resembles a beam of fluid. Such a beam can be better aimed towards the fire.
When the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 rests on its top wall 18, in side view the protrusion 25 extends horizontally from the side wall 7.
-10 - The protrusion 25 is integrally connected to the side wall 7, thereby providing an integral fire extinguish bottle cap 1. This is a robust embodiment and easy to handle for the user.
The connection opening 14 of the first end 10 has an opening diameter 29. The channel 21 has a channel diameter 30. The through hole 17 has a hole diameter 31. The channel diameter 30 is smaller than the opening diameter 29 and/or the hole diameter 31 is smaller than the channel diameter 30.
The through hole 17 diameter is 3mm or less, preferably 2 mm or less.
The bottle cap 1 may have a plurality of through holes 17.
The cross-sectional shape of the through hole 17 may be circular, oval, or rectangular. A rectangular shape defines a slit. Other shapes may also be possible.
A cross-sectional area of the through hole 17, defined by the cross-sectional shape thereof, may be in the range of 2-10mm?2. Such a cross-sectional area allows for a long spray time while having a strong spray which can reach over a distance of several meters.
Figure 5 depicts an embodiment of the fire extinguish bottle cap 1, wherein an opening end 32 of the channel 21 adjacent the connection opening 14 has a diameter substantially equal to the opening diameter 29. A hole end 34 of the channel 21 adjacent the through hole 17 has a diameter substantially equal to the hole diameter 31. The diameter of the channel 21 gradually decreases from the opening diameter 29 to the hole diameter 31.
The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 may be made from plastic. Other materials are also possible, like for example a metal. An advantage of plastic is that it is a cheap material for manufacturing.
The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 may be manufactured by injection moulding. This is an effective way of manufacturing, wherein a high number of products can be made in a cost efficient manner, especially when the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 is an integral element.
The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 may have a bright colour, such as yellow or red. The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 may be provided with a fluorescent, or glow in the dark outer surface 45.
-11 - The fire extinguish bottle cap 1 may comprise a magnet 46, see figure 6. The magnet 46 can be integrated into the fire extinguish bottle cap 1, or provided on an outer side 9 of the fire extinguish bottle cap 1.
Figures 2, 8, 7 and 8 schematically show different views of an assembly 100 according to the invention for extinguishing a fire. The assembly 100 comprises a bottle 3, or container, containing a carbonated beverage. The beverage is not shown in the figures. The bottle 3 has an opening 47. A neck portion 2 of the bottle 3 extends from said opening 47 over a neck height 5.
The assembly 100 comprises a fire extinguishing fire extinguish bottle cap 1 according to the invention as described above. The fire extinguishing fire extinguish bottle cap 1 is mounted on the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3. The through hole 17 of the main body 6 extends beyond the free end 19 of the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3. The through hole extends parallel to a plane defined by the opening of the bottle. The opening diameter 29 of the connection opening 14 corresponds to an outer diameter of the neck portion 2, see figure 8. A method for extinguishing a fire comprises the steps of: a) providing a bottle 3 containing a carbonated beverage, the bottle 3 comprising an opening 47 and a neck portion 2 extending from the opening 47, b) mounting a fire extinguish bottle cap 1 according to the invention on the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3, wherein the through hole 17 of the main body 6 extends beyond the free end 19 of the neck portion 2 of the bottle 3, Cc) flipping the bottle 3 upside down, as shown in figure 2, d) allowing the carbonated beverage to exit the bottle 3 and flow through the fire extinguish bottle cap 1, thereby spraying the beverage via the through hole 17. For providing a stronger spray the user can shake the bottle 3. This way the pressure inside the bottle 3 is increased, forcing the carbonated beverage out of the bottle 3 through the fire extinguish bottle cap 1. An advantage of the fire extinguish bottle cap 1 and of the assembly 100 is that substantially all the fluid inside the bottle 3 can be used for spraying and extinguishing a fire, because the bottle 3 is held upside down during spraying. Providing the through hole 17 at
-12- the side, i.e. in the side wall 7, allows for a horizontal spray while holding the bottle 3 upside down, i.e. vertical.
