To reduce the amount of waste material, the plastic packaging material is a water—soluble polymer such as Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA). The plastic packaging material may contain plant nutrients. The invention also claims a plastic carrier, the plastic of the carrier being a water—soluble polymer, with the plant nutrients being dispersed in the water—soluble polymer.

Description

A method of packaging a plant, and a plastic carrier The present invention relates to a method of packaging a plant, wherein the plant is provided with plastic packaging material.
A method according to the preamble is known in the art. It is for example known to provide a bouquet or a potted plant with a plastic wrapping film and / or to provide the plant with a plastic sachet comprising plant nutrients.
Typically the consumer or person obtaining the packaged plant as a gift or purchased it for personal use will have to dispose of the plastic waste material. This plastic waste material increases the amount of waste material that is collected by waste collection services and increases the burden of transporting and processing this waste material.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method according to the preamble that allows this problem to be reduced.
To this end, a method according to the preamble is characterized in that the plastic packaging material is a water-soluble polymer. The packaging can be disposed of by dissolving it in water and flushing it down the drain. In a dissolved state polymers are typically fairly well biodegradable. Suitable water-soluble polymers are, for example, PVOA (Poly (sodium vinyloxyacetate) and preferably Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA). In the present application, the term plant comprises a potted plant and a bouquet.
According to a favourable embodiment, the plant is packaged using a plastic film made of the water-soluble polymer as a wrap.
Wrapping the plant in a plastic film of water-soluble polymer is an important application of the present invention.
According to a favourable embodiment, the packaging of the plant comprises providing plant nutrients contained in water-soluble polymer.
Typically the consumer or person obtaining the packaged plant as a gift or purchased it for personal use will have to prepare the plant for display. This is an operation that can get messy, because the plant nutrients are provided as a powder in a sachet and its contents may be spilled and then have to be cleaned up after. With the plant nutrients being contained in the water-soluble polymer, the consumer can just dissolve the water-soluble polymer in water to obtain a solution comprising the nutrients for the plant.
In the present invention the term plant nutrients comprises i) one or more salts comprising at least one ion chosen from the group consisting of potassium, phosphate, nitrate, ammonium and/or ii) urea. The salts may be in a solid form, such as in a powdery form or as a tablet, or in a liquid form, such as dissolved in water. In the latter case the water is saturated to prevent dissolution of the water-soluble polymer of the sachet. It is for example saturated with water-soluble polymer.
According to a favourable embodiment, the plant is wrapped in a plastic film made of the water-soluble polymer in which plastic film the plant nutrients are contained.
The plastic film may comprise a pouch, for example formed by folding the plastic film back on itself and sealing the nutrients between the two layers. Alternatively an additional piece of plastic film may be provided to form the pouch.
According to a favourable embodiment, the plant nutrients are contained in the plastic film; with the water-soluble polymer being a matrix material for the plant nutrients.
Such a wrapping may be formed by extruding a mixture of the plant nutrients and the water-soluble polymer to form a film. An advantage is that the resulting carrier in which the plant nutrients are embedded in a matric of water-solutble polymer may be supplied on a roll, like regular wrapping film used to package potted plants or bouguets.
According to a favourable embodiment, the plant is provided with a sachet of the water-soluble material, said sachet containing the plant nutrients.
This method allows providing a packaged plant wherein the consumer can take the sachet and dissolve the sachet in the water supplied to a vase for the plant; or to dissolve it in the water supplied to a watering can for watering a potted plant. More specifically, the plant nutrients provided in the water-soluble polymer can be used without opening a sachet, as the sachet itself can be dissolved in water and used to water the potted plant or, in case of a bouquet, used to put the flowers in the water in which the sachet has been dissolved. In either case, the plant nutrients will not be spilled.
The present invention also relates to a plastic carrier comprising plant nutrients; wherein the plastic of the carrier is a water-soluble polymer, and the plant nutrients are dispersed in the water-soluble polymer.
Such a plastic carrier wherein the plant nutrients are dispersed in the water-soluble polymer as a matrix material 1s suitable for use in the method according to the invention.
The plastic carrier may contain printed information, such as instructions on how to use the plastic carrier or for what type of plant (s) the plastic carrier is intended.
As the plant nutrients are typically salts which may dissolve quicker than the water-soluble polymer, their dissolution may increase the surface area of the plastic and hence may facilitate its dissolution.
According to a favourable embodiment, the plastic carrier is composed of at least two separable units connected at a tearline junction.
This allows a unit comprising plant nutrients to be separated from the remainder of the plastic device so as to make use of said unit. It may be used to prepare water for a bouquet or water for watering a potted plant, without spilling powdery plant nutrients. A sachet according to the state of the art that is not used fully and stored until further use provides a high risk of spilling powdery plant nutrients. This is avoided by the favourable embodiment of the invention.
A unit will contain predetermined amount of plant nutrients corresponding to the concentration thereof in the water-soluble polymer, the size and the thickness of the unit.
The tearline junction may be in the form of a reduced thickness or a perforation.
To facilitate the separation of the units, a notch may be provided at the tearline junction.
According to a favourable embodiment, a notch is provided at the at least one tearline junctions.
This makes it easier to the separate the units when one or more are needed, bij tearing the unit(s) off.
Finally, the present invention relates to plant, wherein the plant is chosen from a potted plant and a bouquet, said plant being provided with a plastic carrier according to any of the claims 7 to 9. The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the drawing where Fig. la shows a packaged potted plant; Fig. 1b shows a packaged bouquet comprising a sachet; Fig. 2 shows a sachet; Fig. 3 shows a roll of plastic film suitable for wrapping a plant; and Fig. 4 shows a plastic carrier to be supplied with potted plants.
Fig 1A shows a potted plant 100 comprising a plant 101 and a pot 102, the potted plant 100 having been packaged in accordance with the method according to the present invention in a plastic film 110. The plastic film is a PVA film comprising, in the specific embodiment shown here, fertilizer salts dispersed in a PVA matrix.
Fig. 1B shows a bouquet 100' comprising flowers 101' as the plant, the bouguet 100' having been packaged in accordance with the method according to the present invention in a regular (non~watersoluble) plastic film 110'. In alternative embodiments a water-soluble plastic film may be used instead. This water-soluble plastic film may be flushed away or it may contain fertiliser salts and be used to prepare water for the vase.
In accordance with the present invention, the bouquet 100' is packaged with a sachet 120 made of a water-soluble plastic film (PVA film) containing fertiliser salts.
Fig. 2 shows the sachet 120 of Fig. 1B with sealed edges 221 and comprising fertiliser salts 222 in a powdery form.
Fig. 3 shows a roll 300 of plastic film 110 suitable for wrapping a plant 100, said plastic film being made of a water-soluble plastic (PVA). In this particular embodiment of a roll, the plastic film comprises fertiliser salts dispersed in said PVA, Thus the plastic film 100 of this embodiment is a plastic carrier in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 4 shows an alternative plastic carrier 400 to be packaged with a potted plant 100. Again, it comprises fertilizer salts dispersed in a matrix of water-soluble plastic material.
The plastic carrier 400 is composed of four separable units 401 connected at a tearline junctions 402. This allows a user to tear of a unit 401 and dissolve it in water for watering the potted plant 100. To facilitate separating two adjacent units, a notch 403 is provided at the tearline junctions 402. 5 The carrier 400 may advantageously comprise a pin 404 for inserting the carrier 400 into soil of the potted plant 100.
