Abstract

A method for sawing a profile, in particular a steel profile. The method comprises: providing a band saw machine provided with a saw band and two guides for guiding the saw band and for moving the saw band through the profile, setting a distance between the guides based on a width of the profile to be sawed, exerting an actual feed force on the saw band by means of the two guides for moving the saw band through the profile, and limiting the actual feed force to a maximum force value. The maximum force value of the feed force is determined in dependence of the distance between the guides.

FIELD The invention relates to a method for sawing a profile, in particular a steel profile and a band saw machine.
BACKGROUND Voortman Steel Machinery sells band saw machines, e.g. VB1050 and VB1250. The known band saw machine comprises a stationary base frame and a saw table for supporting a profile. The saw table is connected to the stationary base frame. The band saw machine has a swivel frame which is connected to the stationary base frame so as to be swivable around a vertical center line. A sawing frame assembly is upwardly and downwardly movably connected to the swivel frame. The sawing frame assembly comprises a sawing frame and at least two saw band pulleys which are connected to the sawing frame of which at least one is drivable with a saw band driving motor. A saw band is guided over the saw band pulleys.
Finally, the sawing frame assembly has a first guide and the second guide for guiding the saw band. The known band saw machine additionally comprises a force sensor for measuring an actual feed force which is indicative of the force exerted by the saw band on the profile.
With the Voortman band saw machine a method for sawing a profile, in particular a steel profile is performed which comprises: - providing a band saw machine provided with a saw band and a first and a second guide for guiding the saw band and for moving the saw band through the profile; - setting a distance between the first guide and the second guide based on a width of the profile to be sawed;
- exerting an actual feed force on the saw band by means of the first guide and the second guide for moving the saw band through the profile; and - limiting the actual feed force to a maximum feed force value.
During sawing, a profile is positioned on the saw table and the sawing frame assembly is moved downwardly so that the saw band is moved through the profile. In such a band saw machine, the actual feed force, i.e. the force exerted on the saw band by the guides, determines the speed with which the saw band is moved through the profile, i.e. the feed, and thus determines the cutting time for cutting through the profile.
To minimise the cutting time, the actual feed force can be increased by increasing the speed of the downward movement of the sawing frame assembly. But in doing so, the increased feed force exerted on the saw band by the profile and the first and the second guides, can cause the saw band to bend between the guides resulting in a bad quality of the saw cut. This could manifest itself in e.g. a wave pattern on the saw cut, i.e. the saw cut is no longer straight. To prevent this unwanted bending, the known band saw machine comprises a force sensor for measuring the actual feed force. The force sensor provides an electrical signal which is indicative for the force exerted by the saw band on the profile. This signal is used in a control system to control the speed of the downward movement of the sawing frame assembly, i.e. the feed, so as to keep the actual feed force at or below a maximum feed force value thus preventing excessive bending of the saw band.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the invention is to provide a method for sawing a profile, in particular a steel profile, with an increased feed speed, without the risk of bending the saw band too much. Too much bending in the context of this description means that the saw cut made with the saw band which bends too much has a bad quality.
A bad quality would be e.g. a wave pattern on the saw cut, a slanted saw cut, jagged edges on the saw cut, an uneven cutting surface etc.
To that end, the invention provides a method according to claim 1. More particular, the method for sawing a profile, described in the background section 1s according to the invention characterized in that the maximum force value of the feed force is determined in dependence of the distance between the first guide and the second guide.
In the present invention, the guides, which are used to move the saw blade through the profile to be sawed, are placed at a distance from each other, spanning the width of the profile to be sawed.
This means that the guides are closer together when sawing a small profile, and spaced further apart when sawing a wide profile.
For each distance between the guides the maximum force value is determined in dependence of said distance.
The core of the invention lays in the realisation that by determining the maximum force value for each distance between the guides separately, as oppose to determining one, overall maximum force value, the maximum force value can be higher, when the guides are closer together.
The advantage of the present invention is that there can be an increase in feed force for profiles which are less wide, without risking bending of the saw blade too much.
This results in a reduced cutting time for these less wide profiles.
For a band saw machine which saws profiles of different widths, the method according to the invention will lead to an average lowering of cutting time and thus to an improved efficiency.
The invention also provides a band saw machine according to claim 7. In particular, the invention provides a band saw machine comprising: — a stationary base frame — a saw table for supporting a profile, the saw table being connected to the stationary base frame,
— a swivel frame which is connected to the stationary base frame so as to be swivable around a vertical center line, and — a sawing frame assembly which is upwardly and downwardly movably connected to the swivel frame, wherein the sawing frame assembly comprises: o a sawing frame; o at least two saw band pulleys which are connected to the sawing frame of which at least one is drivable with a saw band driving motor; o a saw band which is guided over the saw band pulleys; o a first guide and a second guide for guiding the saw band; The band saw machine further comprises: — a force determining unit for determining an actual feed force which is indicative for the force exerted by the saw band on the profile; — a control system which is configured to control the downward movement of the sawing frame assembly such that the actual feed force 1s kept at or below a maximum feed force value.
The band saw machine 1s characterized in that the control system is configured: — to receive a distance input , which distance input is indicative for the distance between the first guide and the second guide; — to determine the maximum feed force value in dependence of that distance input.
The effects and the advantages of the band saw machine according to the invention are the same as the effects and advantages of the method according to the invention.
The present invention will be further elucidated with reference to figures of exemplary embodiments. The embodiments may be combined or may be applied separately from each other.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES In this application similar or corresponding features are denoted by similar or corresponding reference signs. The description of the various embodiments is not limited to the example shown in the figures and the reference numbers used in the detailed description and the claims are not intended to limit the description of the embodiments, but are included to elucidate the embodiments by referring to the example shown in the figures. In general, a band saw machine 10, of which an example is shown in the figures comprising a stationary base frame 20 and a saw table 22 for supporting a profile. The saw table 22 is connected to the stationary base frame 20. Further, the band saw machine 10 comprises a swivel frame 24 which is connected to the stationary base frame 20 so as to be swivable around a vertical center line. A sawing frame assembly 26 is upwardly and downwardly movably connected to the swivel frame. The sawing frame assembly comprises a sawing frame 28 and at least two saw band pulleys which are connected to the sawing frame 28 of which at least one is drivable with a saw band driving motor. A saw band 12 is guided over the saw band pulleys. A first guide 14 and a second guide 16 are part of the sawing frame assembly 26 for guiding the saw band. The band saw machine additionally comprises a force determining unit for determining an actual feed force which is indicative for the force exerted by the saw band 12 on the profile. Finally, the band saw machine comprises a control system which 1s configured to control the downward movement of the sawing frame assembly 26 such that the actual feed force is kept at or below a maximum feed force value. According to the invention, the band saw machine is characterized in that the control system is configured: — to receive a distance input , which distance input is indicative for the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16; — to determine the maximum feed force value in dependence of that distance input.
The effects and advantages of the method for sawing a profile, including a steel profile, have been described in the summary section and these effects and advantages are inserted here by reference.
In an embodiment, the control system is configured to execute a control loop by: — using a signal from the force determining unit for determining the actual feed force as a feedback signal; and by — generating a control signal for controlling the downward movement of the sawing frame assembly 26 with respect to the swivel frame 24 thereby keeping actual feed force at or below the maximum feed force value.
In an embodiment the band saw machine 10 further comprises a distance determining unit configured to determine the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 and to generate the distance input that is received by the control system on the basis of the determined distance.
Such a distance determining unit minimized the risk of making mistakes when determining the distance input.
Instead of using a distance determining unit, the distance input can also be inputted by means of a keyboard on the controller of the band saw machine 10. Alternatively, the distance input may also be calculated on the basis of the width of the profile to be sawn. In another alternative, information which is used for automatically setting the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 can be used to determine the distance input of the control system 14. In an embodiment, the distance determining unit may be a distance sensor, e.g. a laser distance meter or a linear encoder.
With such a distance sensor, the distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 can be determined very precise and in a cost effective manner.
Such a distance sensor may, for example, be beneficial when the distance between the guides is set by hand.
In an alternative embodiment, the distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 may be set by a drive.
A controller for controlling the drive for setting the distance between the guides 14, 16 may additionally have the function of the distance determining unit that provides the distance input to the control system which distance input is indicative for the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16. The drive may for example be a clamp drive which is primarily used for controlling a profile clamp assembly of the band saw machine 10 as will become from the following description.
The band saw machine 10 may comprise a first profile clamp 30, a second profile clamp 32, and a profile receiving space 34 between the first and the second profile clamps 30, 32. The first and second profile clamps 30, 32 are moveable away from and towards each other for clamping a profile between the first and the second clamp 30, 32 such that the profile is fixated with respect to the saw table 22 and the swivel frame 24. One of the clamps may have a fixed position and serve as a stop or abutment.
In an embodiment, the first guide 14 may be vertically movably connected to the first profile clamp 30. A movement of the first profile clamp towards or away from the second profile clamp 32 results in a corresponding movement of the first guide 14 towards or away from the second guide 16.
In an embodiment, the second guide 16 may be vertically movably connected to the second profile clamp 32. A movement of the second profile clamp 32 towards or away from the first profile clamp 30 results in a corresponding movement of the second guide 16 towards or away from the first guide 14.
With these last two embodiments, the setting of the distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 is performed automatically during clamping of the profile between the first and the second profile clamps 30, 32. Not only has this the advantage of achieving an optimal distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 in a very quick manner, namely simultaneously with the clamping of the profile, also the risk of setting the distance between the guides 14, 16 wrongly is excluded. Further, by connecting the first guide 14 to the first profile clamp 30 and connecting the second guide 16 to the second profile clamp 32, the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 are always as close as possible to the profile when the profile is clamped between the first and the second profile clamps 30, 32. Thus, always a minimum distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 is obtained and, consequently, the maximum feed force value will always be determined at the highest possible level for a give profile.
Thus, the feed force that can be exerted will then be as high as possible and the time needed for sawing the profile will be as short as possible while keeping a high quality saw cut and without damaging the saw blade 12 and/or the band saw machine 10.
The method for sawing a profile, in particular a steel profile, comprises in most general terms: - providing a band saw machine 10 provided with a saw band 12 and a first and a second guide 14, 16 for guiding the saw band 12 and for moving the saw band 12 through the profile; - setting a distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 based on a width of the profile to be sawed;
- exerting an actual feed force on the saw band 12 by means of the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 for moving the saw band 12 through the profile; and - limiting the actual feed force to a maximum feed force value, wherein the maximum force value of the feed force is determined in dependence of the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide
16. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise: - determining the actual feed force; and - controlling a feed speed of a feed movement of the first and the second guides 14, 16 and the saw band 12 for keeping the actual feed force substantially at a predetermined feed force value when the saw band 12 1s guided through the profile, wherein the predetermined force value is set at or below the maximum feed force value.
In order to keep the actual feed force below the maximum feed force value, it 1s advantageous to know said actual feed force. The advantage of this embodiment is that it determines the actual feed force and uses its value to keep the feed force at a predetermined, constant value. This predetermined value can be at, but also below, the maximum feed force value. It can of course not be above the maximum feed force value without risking damage to the saw band 12 or the band saw machine 10 or without risking a too severe bending of the saw band 12 resulting in a saw cut with a less than optimal quality.
The determining of the actual feed force may be performed by at least one force sensor 18 provided on at least one of the two guides 14, 16. But other known means of determining the actual feed force could be used as well.
In an embodiment, the determining of the actual feed force may be performed by acquiring the amount of power needed for driving the feed movement, i.e. the downward movement of the saw frame assembly, which power is indicative for the actual feed force, and by converting said amount of power in the actual feed force. Thus a force sensor may not be needed, which may be beneficial from a cost perspective. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise automatically determining the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide
16. Automatically determining the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16 prevents that human mistakes are made with the possible risk that the actual feed force may exceed the maximum feed force value that belongs to the actual distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16. Thus, with this embodiment, the risk of damage or poor cutting quality is reduced. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise: — receiving in a control system of the band saw machine a distance input delivered by a distance determining unit indicating the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16; and — determining the maximum feed force value in dependence of that distance input. This embodiment further elucidates how the automatically determining of the distance between the first and the second guides 14, 16 may be performed, namely by means of a distance determining unit. The distance determining unit may be a distance sensor, e.g. a laser distance meter or a linear encoder. Other distance determining units are feasible as well as described above. According to this embodiment, the distance determining unit produces a distance input which indicates the distance between the first guide 14 and the second guide 16. Based on that distance input, the control system may determine the maximum feed force value. In other words, the maximum feed force value depends on the distance input which is indicative for the distance between the first and the second guide
14, 16 and will be higher when the distance is relatively small and will be lower when the distance 1s relatively large.
The various embodiments which are described above may be used implemented independently from one another and may be combined with one another in various ways.
