Abstract
Airplane with a passenger cabin, wherein the passenger cabin comprises an overhead bin, and the overhead stowage com— prises at least one personal storage box. The at least one per— sonal storage box is removable from the overhead stowage and is tailored with dimensions enabling it to hold a suitcase or trol— ley according to internationally accepted IATA hand luggage di— mensions, in particular dimensions of maximum 40,0 x 55,0 x 23,0 cm.
Description
The invention relates to an airplane with a passenger cabin, wherein the passenger cabin comprises an overhead stowage .
Everyone knows the risk of boarding at a late instance when many of the other passengers have already boarded and taken their seat. The earlier passengers have placed their carry-on luggage in the overhead stowage and there is no more room left in the overhead stowage to store the latecomers suitcase or other luggage. This besides the fact that on average in a typical single aisle aircraft, the carry-on volume is available only for 55% of the passenger capacity if all passengers carry-on IATA standard size luggage. The excess luggage for which no storage space in the passenger cabin is available must then be taken out of the passenger cabin and be placed with the checked-in luggage in the storage area of the airplane. This is a hassle not only for the late coming passenger but also for the flight attendants, and it may even be a risk that causes late departure of the airplane, on average amounting up to 10 minutes per flight.
Another aspect is that full service carrier (FSC) airlines are suffering from heavy competition of Low cost carrier (LCC) airlines which makes them look for ways to increase income since the base airfares are at many routes (very) low, barely making good the actual cost of flying. Over the years airlines have made passengers pay for drinks, meals and also for carry-on luggage in excess of one item. This in turn has incited creativity on the part of the passengers to increase the size of their carry-on luggage, or even to over-dress in order to avoid that any baggage over the allowance must be checked in for the flight. All in all both airlines and passengers are in an uncomfortable race and fight with each other to avoid costs and travel at the least possible expenses.
The invention is aimed at providing a solution for at least some of these problems, privileging the passenger's flight experience on the same stage as empowering the airline to fly more profitably, and for this purpose an airplane and a personal storage box are proposed in accordance with one or more of the appended claims.
Essentially the invention proposes that the overhead stowage comprises at least one personal storage box, but preferably a series of personal storage boxes. The at least one personal storage box can be fixed in the overhead stowage but is preferably removable from the overhead stowage. After market acceptance and operational relatability, an ultimate development of the storage box of the invention may include a redesigned personal service unit to provide for instance personal lighting and oxygen dispensers items. This will impact today cabin engineering and manufacturing, making a commercial aircraft cabin much lighter with ultimately providing optimized payload weight per flight.
An airplane equipped with a personal storage box or boxes enables passengers to reserve and pay for one or more of such boxes, at the expense of course of greater traveling expenses (or less if travelling without carry-on luggage), but then benefiting from a much more comfortable boarding and flight experience. The airline can exploit the personal storage boxes (for instance by providing the boxes as third party dispenser of goods) and enjoy a higher income from the reservations of these personal storage boxes. Moreover, by introducing and applying the concept of the personal storage box, the overall boarding procedure and time required can be reduced because the aircraft at the gate will have no open space for unreserved storage boxes. If a passenger has no reserved storage box the carry-on luggage must be checked in. Since during boarding no time is lost anymore for arranging that all carry-on luggage can be stored in the overhead stowage, the boarding procedure can be accelerated and more on-time departures can be secured. Overall airline efficiency can thus be improved in a way that for the majority of network airlines a saving of 10 min delays per flight will be possible and enable an additional turn-around per aircraft.
Preferably but not exclusively the at least one personal storage box is tailored with dimensions enabling it to fit in an overhead stowage and to hold a suitcase or trolley according to internationally accepted IATA hand luggage dimen slons, in particular dimensions of no more than 40,0 x 55,0 x 23,0 cm are preferable.
One of the preferred features increasing security is that the at least one personal storage box is lockable.
Preferably the at least one personal storage box has a mechanical lock, and that said mechanical lock can be locked or unlocked with one or more lock driving means selected from the group comprising a scanning device, an Internet connection, a Bluetooth or radiofrequency receiver, a physical key.
The arrangement with the mechanical lock that can be locked or unlocked with lock driving means that are selectively operable is a suitable arrangement to make prior reservations of the personal storage box possible, in particular when the personal storage box is lockable with a mechanical lock which is drivingly connected with the scanning device, and the scanning device is equipped to read a QR code. The QR code can for instance be printed on the boarding pass of the passenger. To allow safety procedures the aircraft crew can bypass the above procedure with crew credentials.
In order to prepare for the flight it is beneficial that the at least one personal storage box has a mechanical lock that is operable through the Internet, and is arranged to be locked or unlocked remotely or from a distance. In this way the reserved personal storage boxes can be locked prior to boarding, and be unlocked by the passengers that have a reserved personal storage box by using for instance their boarding pass with the QR code or another code that unlocks the mechanical lock. The storage box online booking system, handling system from and to the airplane cabin is preferably interconnected by a dedicated application.
Another preferred feature is that the or each personal storage box has a backup power system enabling it to unlock or be unlocked when power in the airplane fails by the crew or by maintenance personnel.
Assembly of the personal storage box is preferably done by arranging that the or each personal storage box comprises a floor panel, two side panels, a top panel, a footer and a header with a door, preferably a tambour door. Other embodiments are of course also possible; the door does not need to be a tambour door for instance but this type of door is very suitable for the intended application.
It is further preferred that the footer is provided with the mechanical lock, and that said mechanical lock operates or can operate on the (tambour) door.
Another preferred feature is that the footer is provided with a status display. The status display can for instance show whether the box is locked or unlocked, and can also show the number of the seat of the passenger who has reserved the particular personal storage box. For predictive analysis a weighting per flight of the personal storage box can also be featured.
Preferably the or each personal storage box is assembled from lightweight component and fire retardant materials connected to each other with click in connections.
The invention is also embodied in a loose personal storage box which may be fitted in an existing airplane, for instance during a retrofit operation. In this connection it is important that the box is tailored with dimensions enabling it to fit in an overhead stowage of an airplane and to hold a suitcase or trolley according to internationally accepted IATA hand luggage dimensions, in particular dimensions of no more than 40,0 x 55,0 x 23,0 cm.
Also for such a personal storage box which is used for a retrofit operation, it is preferred that the at least one personal storage box is lockable. In this connection preferably the at least one personal storage box has a mechanical lock, wherein said mechanical lock can be locked or unlocked with one or more lock driving means selected from the group comprising a scanning device, an Internet connection, a Bluetooth or radiofrequency receiver, a physical key.
Also the personal storage box for a retrofit operation preferably has the feature that the at least one personal storage box is lockable with a mechanical lock which is drivingly connected with the scanning device, wherein the scanning device is equipped to read a QR code.
Beneficially the at least one personal storage box has a mechanical lock that is operable through the Internet, and is arranged to be locked or unlocked remotely or from a distance .
Preferably the personal storage box is interconnectable with another personal storage box.
Also preferably the personal storage box has a backup power system enabling it to unlock or be unlocked.
The personal storage box according to the invention preferably comprises a floor panel, two side panels, a top panel, a footer and a header with a door, preferably a tambour door. Preferably the footer is provided with the mechanical lock, and said mechanical lock operates or can operate on the (tambour) door. Further preferably the footer is provided with a status display.
Advantageously the personal storage box is assembled from lightweight component and fire retardant materials connected to each other with click in connections.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing:
-figure 1 shows an overhead stowage in an airplane provided with a series of personal storage boxes according to the invention;
-figure 2 shows an embodiment of a single personal storage box according to the invention;
-figure 3 shows an overhead storage box according to the invention embodied as a soft-drink dispenser;
-figure 4 shows constituent parts of an overhead storage box according to the invention;
-figure 5 shows unlocking of a personal storage box with a smart phone displaying an image of a QR code; and
-figure 6 shows a boarding pass with a QR code usable for unlocking a personal storage box of the invention.
As an exemplary embodiment of the invention figure 1 shows a retrofitted interior of an aircraft 1 cabin, wherein a series of personal storage boxes 2 (PSB's) (some closed, some open) are applied as smart passenger units for secure storage of personal belongings inside of the overhead stowage 3 of an
Airbus A320 passenger aircraft. Accordingly the FSB's 2 are designed to fit in a standard overhead stowage 3, such as available on Airbus and Boeing aircrafts. The Personal Storage Boxes 2 can be used to store items up to the size of IATA cabin trolley hand luggage.
Figure 1 shows amongst others a single IATA 55 TOPAS cabin trolley 4 placed in a PSB 2. Each PSB 2 is designed to be able to hold such a cabin trolley with dimensions of up to 40,0 x 55,0 x 23,0 cm. The headspace above the cabin trolley 4 (inside the PSB 2) provides further space for storing for instance jacket, wallet and smaller items.
A standard Airbus A320 overhead stowage 3 according to figure 1 will be able to hold several PSBs 2 next to each other up to the full capacity of the stowage 3 is used, depending of course on the stowage 3 size.
Figure 3 shows an application wherein the personal storage box is embodied as a dispenser for soft-drinks 5, which can be exploited by the airline or by a third party.
In any application it is preferred that each PSB 2 shall be designed as a stand-alone unit, which may be connected to another PSB, but all PSB's are preferably set up individually. The PSB 2 itself shall have following elements, as depicted in figure 4:
1. Floor panel 2.1
2. Side panels 2.2 and 2.3
3. Top panel 2.4
4. Header with a door, preferably a tambour door 2.5
5. Footer panel 2.6 with (more clearly shown in figure
2) LED display 2.7 and locking system
The floor panel 2.1, side panels 2.2 and 2.3, and the top panel 2.4 shall be made of lightweight component materials. Preferably they are able to be connected and separated from each other with a quickly operable click-in connect and disconnect system for easy assembly. The PSB 2 is preferably removable from the stowage 3 of the airplane 1 without disassembling .
The door is preferably a tambour door 2.5 and shall preferably retract fully into the header when ready for loading, and shall close completely and be able to lock into the footer 2.6 of the personal storage box 2. The locking mechanism is preferably integrated in the footer 2.6.
The header, (tambour) door 2.5 and footer 2.6 can be customizable in airline colours, wherein preferably the following branding options are provided in the design:
1. The surface of the material is flat and non-repellent in order to apply a suitable décor film.
2. The display 2.7 on the footer 2.6 is able to show a logo pictogram in standby mode.
Suitably the PSB 2 can be locked with a mechanical lock. Said mechanical lock can be locked or unlocked with one or more lock driving means selected from the group comprising a scanning device, an Internet connection, a Bluetooth or radiofrequency receiver, a physical key. When the mechanical lock is drivingly connected with a scanning device 2.8 that is provided in the footer 2.6 as shown in figure 5, the scanning device 2.8 is suitably equipped to read a QR code as for instance provided on a boarding pass as shown in figure 6. The lock shall thus be able to lock and unlock via one or more of the following interactions:
1. Scan of boarding pass ID (lock and unlock)
2. WLAN or NFC overwrite (unlock)
3. Mechanical key (unlock)
The invention thus provides for a pre-bookable personal over head space, wherein the passenger is allowed to book the PSB 2, for instance via the airline website. Similar to the ordering of specific food requirements, a PSB 2 can be offered to the passenger as an additional bookable item (added to the purchase), which will reserve a PSB 2 inside of the aircraft 1, preferably above the allocated seat.
The PSB 2 can preferably be opened by the boarding pass, which the customer will use to pass through the boarding sequence at the airport. This boarding pass may be held via an image on a smart phone as shown in figure 5 or in paper format as shown in figure 6. The scanning device 2.8, preferably provided in the footer 2.6 of the PSB 2, shall be capable of locking and unlocking the (tambour) door 2.5 when it monitors a correct code on the boarding pass. Default setting of the (tambour) door is locked.
The airline can address all PSBs 2 individually or collectively from a distance via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or any other wireless interaction to enable setting of the following parameters :
1. Transmit the code information, preferably QR code information which is required for locking and unlocking, and the passenger seat number for all PSBs booked.
2. Receive maintenance status (functional check indication), if the concerning PSB is OK or needs attention.
3. Master override, all PSB open function (in Emergency). Preferably there is a hardware opening key on each box in case of power failure.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the personal storage box and airplane of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention.
