Connector element for hanging ceiling and associated ceiling and method
The invention relates to a connector element for a hanging ceiling, a hanging ceiling and a method for hanging a hanging ceiling.
Hanging ceilings are used in practice in various locations, such as shopping malls, stores, office buildings and/or industrial buildings. Most hanging ceilings comprise profile parts, often Ushaped parts, which are connected to each other using connection elements. The connection elements are also used to hang the hanging ceiling from a ceiling. In order to supply lighting to a location, hanging ceilings are often equipped with lighting rails and/or lighting rail systems to provide lighting that is adaptable with respect to orientation and /or position.
Such systems, especially when equipped with lighting rails, are difficult to install, which is time-consuming and costly. This is mainly due to the fact that the installation of the connection elements and in particular the connecting thereof with the profile parts often requires sawing and/or drilling operations.
The invention is aimed at providing an improved connection element, which obviates or at least reduces the disadvantages of the known connection elements.
The invention therefore provides a connection element for a hanging ceiling, such as a lighting ceiling, the connection element comprising a housing provided with:
an upper part comprising an upper wall and at least two side walls that enclose an inner space, wherein:
at least one of the side walls is provided with an opening configured for accepting at least part of a lighting element and/or a connection thereof;
one or more side walls are provided with first coupling and/or fastening elements, such as openings, configured for connecting second coupling and/or fastening elements for connecting the connection element with a profile part of a hanging ceiling; and one or more sidewalls are provided with at least one sidewall-fastening element; and a bottom part having a bottom wall that in use of the connection element is downwardly facing and that is provided with fastening elements that are configured for cooperation with the sidewall-fastening elements for connecting the bottom part and the upper part with each other such that the inner space during installation or in use of the connection element is accessible from an underside;
wherein the connection element further comprises a hanging element that is operably connected to the housing, wherein the hanging element is configured for hanging the connection element from a ceiling.
The connection element according to the invention has the advantage that the side walls are provided with opening for attaching and/or inserting lighting elements and/or connectors for such lighting elements. The connection elements known from practice are not provided with constructive features that allow for easy connection and/or inserting of lighting elements or connectors for such lighting elements. Instead, connecting the lighting elements with an energy supply can only be performed by drilling or sawing a hole in the connection elements after which a cable may be connected. This is time-consuming and costly. The connection element according to the invention is provided with openings in the side wall that are preferably adapted for inserting connectors that are connectable to lighting elements. As a result, the time required for connecting lighting elements to an energy supply is significantly reduced, therewith reducing the installation costs. Alternatively, the lighting elements may at least partially be inserted into the connection element. Various options are possible for connecting the lighting element and/or the connector with the profile part and/or the connection element. This comprises for example sliding, clamping or clicking a connector in the opening and/or a groove or rail.
The connection element according to the invention also provides the advantage that the inner space of the connection element, in combination with the side wall openings, allow connectors and/or cables to be provided ‘around the corner’. In other words, the connection element and the profile parts may be used as a cable duct or cable channel, preferably a electrical cable duct. Cables, especially electrical cables, data cables and/or other cables (including cables having BUS-connectors) may be positioned in a profile part and extended through the inner space to a different profile part, even a profile part that is substantially perpendicularly positioned. As such the cables can be laid ‘around the corner’. The connection element may also be used as a junction, in which multiple cables converge. The multiple cables may be coupled to each other or may extend through the inner space without being connected to each other. Preferably, the cables and connectors are substantially contained in the inner space.
The connection element is further adapted to be connectable to profile parts of existing hanging ceilings, which allows replacing existing connection elements with connection elements according to the invention. This is especially advantageous when refurnishing and/or replacement of a building in which a hanging ceiling is provided. Furthermore, the connection element according to the invention also allows profile parts to be easily replaced. Individual profile parts can be easily disconnected from a connection element, because the connection between the profile parts and the connection element is accessible from the inner space of the connection element. A profile part may therefore be easily disconnected and replaced with a different profile part, for example by switching a standard profile part having a fluorescent light with a profile part having an integrated lighting rail for spots. As a result, using the connection element according to the invention also provides a modular hanging ceiling.
Another advantage of the connector element according lo the invention is that both during installation and in use of the connection element, the inner space of the connection element is accessible from the underside. As a result, the connection of the lighting elements can be accessed during use, i.e. when the connection element is part of a hanging ceiling. Furthermore, during installation the connection between lighting elements and/or an energy supply may be made after hanging and aligning the hanging ceiling. This is not possible in the known connection elements, because such elements have a closed and rigid bottom wall, which does not allow access from an underside of the connection element. As a result, installation time can be reduced and the complexity of installation is reduced as well.
Several options are available to make the inner space of the connection element accessible from an underside. Preferably, the bottom part can be displaced to make the inner space accessible. The bottom part may for example be slidingly or hingeably connected to the upper part, so that the bottom part can be displaced to provide access. Alternatively, the bottom part can be detachably connected to the upper part and be completely removed to provide access to the inner space, after which it can be reconnected to the upper part. Other options for connecting the bottom part are also considered to fall within the scope of protection of the connection element according to the invention.
Yet another advantage of the connection element according to the invention is that a single connection element may be used in different locations. The connection element may be used in conjunction with a single lighting element, or with up to four different lighting elements which are connected to the four different side walls of the connection elements. Therefore, a single standard profile part and a single standard connection element may be used for providing a complete hanging ceiling, whereas known hanging ceilings require multiple different parts. As a result, a simpler and thus more efficient installation is achieved.
For a single standard connection element according to the invention, it is preferred to use a connection element having four side walls, each of which is provided with an opening for inserting a lighting element and/or a connection thereof. If such a standard element is used as a T-junction or comer piece, two side walls may be covered with a cover plate, which abuts with the side wall and closes off the opening in the respective side wall. A cover plate may be connected rigidly or, preferably, releasably. Furthermore, the connection between a side wall and a cover plate may be provided with a variety of techniques, such as hanging, clicking, sliding, gluing and/or similar known connection techniques.
It is however also possible to manufacture different connection elements, which have one or more closed side walls. Such connection elements may for example be used in corners or on Tjunctions.
The connection element according to an embodiment of the invention be provided with one or more openings in the upper wall, which can be used for connecting cables for energy supply and/or other electronic equipment. This allows for an easy connection of the energy supply to the lighting elements that are provided in the profile parts connected to the connection element. Also, the openings in the upper wall may be used to connect lighting form a profile part. In practice, profile parts are known that comprise a fluorescent light that is provided in a U-shaped profile, which have an electrical connection that is configured to be connected from an upper side of the profile. The opening in the upper wall of the connection element according to the invention may be used for providing an electrical connection from the inner space of the connection element through the opening in the upper wall to a fluorescent light of such a profile part.
Furthermore, the connection between the bottom part and the side wall fastening element can be achieved in various ways, such as screwing, bolting and/or gluing. Preferably, the bottom part and the side wall are connected using double-sided tape, and more preferably industrial grade double-sided tape. This allows the bottom part to be detached if necessary without having to break/damage the connection element. Additionally, it should be noted that the dimensions of the connection element may be chosen to match the dimensions of the profile part. The dimensions may also be chosen according to different specifications, which may include providing a predetermined ratio. A profile part may be provided with a height, length and width that differ from a height, length and width of the connection element.
In an embodiment according to the invention the connection element has a width, a length and a height, wherein the width and the length are preferably substantially equal.
The dimensions of the connection element may be fixed dimensions, wherein compatibility with existing hanging ceiling systems is achieved by adapting the positioning of the coupling and/or fastening elements in the side walls. Alternatively and preferably, the dimensions of the connection element are adapted to the specific dimensions of existing hanging ceiling systems. This approach makes it easier to connect the connection element with existing profiles of hanging ceiling systems and provides a user with a visual continuity in the ceiling.
In an embodiment according to the invention, the height of the connection element is in the range of 10 - 120 mm, preferably in the range of 20 - 100 mm, and more preferably in the range of 40 - 80 mm.
In an embodiment according to the invention, the length of the connection element is in the range of 30 - 320 nun, preferably in the range of 60 - 240 nun and more preferably in the range of 100 - 200 mm.
In an embodiment according to the invention, the width of the connection element is in the range of 30 - 320 mm, preferably in the range of 60 - 240 mm and more preferably in the range of 100 - 200 nun.
In an embodiment according to the invention the bottom part may be detachably connected with the upper part.
The advantage of a detachable bottom part is that the electric and/or electronics are easily accessible during and after installation of the hanging ceiling. This makes it relatively easy to connect and/or disconnect lighting elements from the energy supply and/or each other. Preferably, the lighting elements are connected to a central hub that is positioned in the connection element and that is connected to the energy supply. Such connections may for example comprise slidably and/or clickable connectors. Using this embodiment therefore provides a more flexible system in which replacing damaged or malfunctioning parts is easy.
In an embodiment according to the invention, the bottom part may be hingedly connected to the upper part.
Furthermore, a hinged connection reduces the risk of the bottom part falling down during installation or de-installation. Therewith the risk of injury of people is reduced.
In an embodiment according to the invention one or more side walls may be provided with adj ustment openings for inserting or fastening adjustment elements such that the orientation of a profile part that is connected to the connection element is adjustable in relation to the connection element.
Providing openings for inserting or connecting adjustment elements provides a more flexible connection element, because it allows for a more precise positioning of the profile parts relative to the connection element. The profile parts may, after connecting to the connection element, be slightly adjusted in either vertical position and/or horizontal position relative to the connection element. Slight off-sets between the different connection elements to which a profile part is connected can therewith be corrected.
In an embodiment according to the invention the coupling- and/or fastening elements may comprise one of a group of bolt-and-nut connection, click-and-go-connection and/or a hookconnection.
The coupling- and/or fastening elements may be provided by a great variety of means. Preferably, the connection is provided such that it can be easily connected and/or disconnected. In a preferred embodiment, the coupling or connection between the connection element and a profile part is made by means of a click-and-go connection in which the profile part has a projection which can be inserted into a lock-shaped opening in the connection element. After insertion, the profile part is slided downward, wherein the projection is snugly fitted into the lower part of the lock-shaped opening, therewith providing a solid connection.
hi an embodiment according to the invention, the sidewall-fastening elements may comprise a bent part of sheet material that extends substantially parallel to the bottom part, wherein the part of sheet material may be at least partially connectable to an upper side of the bottom part.
The bent part of sheet material according to this embodiment preferably comprises an extended part of a side wall, which is bent along a bending line to extend substantially parallel to the bottom part. By providing such a bent part that is integral part of the side wall, a connection between the bottom part and the upper part that is invisible from a lower side of the bottom part is made possible. This may for example be achieved by providing double-sided industrial tape to the lower side of the bent part, which is connected to the bottom part by pressing the two parts together. This allows for a secure, disconnectable junction that installable in a relatively limited amount of time. The connection may also be made using other connection means, for example magnets and/or electromagnetic connectors. Other options as known to the skilled person to provide such connections may be used as well.
In an embodiment according to the invention each sidewall-fastening element may be provided with an opening or notch, the bottom part may be provided with a projection and the projection and the opening or notch may be configured to cooperate to position the bottom part with regard to the upper part before connecting the bottom part and the upper part.
hi order to provide an accurate positioning of the bottom part relative to the upper part before connecting these parts to each other, the bottom part may advantageously be provided with two projections that cooperate with an opening or notch in the bent part of the side wall. During installation of the bottom part, the positioning is performed by lining up the projections with the notch, after which the projections are slid into the notches and the bottom part is positioned. Subsequently, the bottom part may be pressed in an upward direction, therewith connecting the bottom part, most notably a connection element thereon, with the bent part of the side wall.
In a preferred embodiment, the bottom plate is provided with four projections. Preferably, a first set of two projections is positioned on a substantially straight line on the bottom wall that extends parallel to an edge and the second set is positioned on a substantially straight line that extends parallel to the first line. When connected to the upper part, the four projections substantially prevent the bottom wall from moving in a plane in which the bottom wall extends. As a result, the connection element or elements on the bottom wall are only subjected to forces that are directed substantially perpendicular to the bottom wall (i.e. in a vertical direction). As a result, the chance of accidental release of the connection element and thus the bottom wall is substantially prevented.
In an embodiment according to the invention the upper part and the side walls may be manufactured from a single sheet of plate material, wherein the side walls may be brought into a substantially perpendicular position with regard to the upper wall by using a bending apparatus.
The upper part may advantageously be manufactured from a single sheet of plate material using a bending apparatus. This allows for high-precision manufacturing against relatively low costs per connection element. Preferably, the manufacturing process is used in conjunction with metal or a metal alloy, such as stainless steel. For some applications, it may however conceivable to use a plate of sheet material that is made of a high-grade plastic, which can be bent using a temperature gradient.
In an embodiment according to the invention the side walls may be connected to each other and/or the upper wall by welding.
Additional or alternative to the bending process according to an embodiment of the invention, the connection between the side walls and/or the upper wall may be provided by means of welding. Preferably, the connection elements are manufactured using bending, after which the edges of the side walls are connected to each other by means of welding. The manufacturing process may entail subsequent actions of bending and welding to provide a robust and esthetically pleasing connection element.
In an embodiment according to the invention the hanging element may be connected to the upper part and/or the side walls by clicking or hitching on or sliding into the upper part.
Although various options are available for connecting the hanging element to the upper part, it is advantageous to use a sliding connection. Preferably, the upper wall of the upper part is provided with a slit in which a central part of the hanging element is slidable. The side parts of the hanging element abut with an underside of the upper wall and/or with the side walls. In use, this allows the upper wall, and therewith the connection element, to be supported on the hanging element. Additionally or alternatively, the hanging element may be welded to the upper wall and/or the side walls. Especially a combination of a sliding connection and welding provides a high strength connection capable of supporting a hanging ceiling.
In an embodiment according to the invention, the connection element is provided with an earthing connection that is configured for earthing the bottom wall.
In order to further enhance the (electrical) safety of the connection element, the connection element may be advantageously be provided with an earthing connection. The earthing connection may be executed in various different manners, such as an earthing cable, a releasable connection having two mated connectors or another suitable earthing connection. In a preferred embodiment, a side wall is provided with a connector to which a first end of an earthing cable is connectable. The bottom wall is provided with a projection to which a second end of the earthing cable is connectable, wherein, when the bottom wall is connected to the upper part, an earthing connection is formed.
The invention also relates to a hanging ceiling, such as a lighting ceiling, comprising:
a plurality of connection elements according to the present invention;
a plurality of profile parts, each being connected with at least one end to a connection element; and wherein the connection elements are connectable with a ceiling structure for hanging the hanging ceiling.
The hanging ceiling according to the invention provides the same effects and advantages as the connection element according to the invention. The hanging ceiling according to the invention has the advantage that it can be installed in a relatively short period of time due to the reduced time that is required for connecting the connection element with the profile parts.
In an embodiment of the hanging ceiling according to the invention, the hanging ceiling may further comprise one or more lighting elements, each being connected to a profile part, wherein the connectors and/or the lighting elements are at least partially inserted in the openings in the side walls for connecting the lighting elements to an energy supply and/or to other lighting elements.
The hanging ceiling according to this embodiment allows lighting elements to be connected to the hanging ceiling in a relative easy and straightforward manner. The lighting element may be connected to the profile part, for example by clicking, sliding or bolting it into the profile part. A connector is inserted or connected to the lighting element and the profile part through the opening in the connection element associated with the profile part. Subsequently, the connector is connected to a connector of an energy supply and/or a different lighting element by accessing the inner space from an underside of the connection element. In a preferred embodiment, the lighting element is integrated with a connector so that they can be installed in a single installation operation. The invention also relates to a method for hanging a hanging ceiling, the method comprising:
providing connection elements according to the invention and providing profiles parts which are connectable therewith;
connecting the connection elements to a ceiling; connecting one or more profile parts to a connection element; and connecting the bottom part with the upper part of the connection element.
The method according to the invention provides the same advantages and effects as the connection element and the hanging ceiling according to the invention.
The method according to the invention has the advantage that the installation or refurbishment of a hanging ceiling can be performed within a relatively short time period, therewith reducing the installation costs. This is mainly due to the fact that no sawing and/or drilling is required, because the connection element can easily be connected to the profile parts, for example by clicking or hanging them into place. Maintenance of the lighting elements and/or associated elements can be done from below.
In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, the method further comprises applying lighting elements in or on one or more profile parts and connecting the lighting elements.
In an embodiment of the method in which the connection element is provided with a detachable or displaceable bottom part, the installation of the hanging ceiling and the connection of the lighting element with a connector of an energy supply and/or a different lighting element can be performed before connecting the bottom part with the upper part. The operation of connecting the lighting element can easily be performed when the bottom part is not connected.
The advantage of this embodiment is that connecting the lighting elements with the profile parts and subsequently connecting them to an energy supply can also be performed in a quick and safe way from the underside of the connection element. Preferably, the lighting elements and the connectors are slided or clicked into place. The connectors can be easily connected to an energy supply, after which the installation can be completed by connecting the bottom part to the upper part. As a result, a safe, quick and reliable method is achieved for installing a hanging ceiling.
In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, connecting the lighting elements may comprise at least partially inserting a connector into the profile part, wherein the connector is connectable to connectors of other lighting elements and/or an energy supply which are at least partially present in the connection element.
Further advantages, features and details of the invention are elucidated on the basis of preferred embodiments thereof, wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an example of a hanging ceiling according to the invention comprising a plurality of connection elements;
Figure 2 shows a second example of a hanging ceiling according to the invention;
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of an example of a connection element according to the invention;
Figure 4 shows a side view of the example of the connection element according to figure 3;
Figure 5 shows a cross-sectional view along the line 5-5 of figure 4;
Figure 6 shows a top view of the example of the connection element according to figure 3;
Figure 7 shows a front view of the example of the connection element according to figure 3; and
Figure 8 shows a perspective view of an example of a bottom part of a connection element according to the invention.
A hanging ceiling 1000 according to the invention ( see figures 1 and 2) comprises a plurality of connection elements 1002 and a plurality of profile parts 1004, 1006. A hanging ceiling, for example an existing hanging ceiling, can relatively easily be converted to a hanging ceiling according to the invention by replacing the connection elements.
An example of connection element 2 according to the invention (see figures 3-8) comprises housing 4, which includes upper part 6 and bottom part 8. In this example upper part 6 comprises upper wall 10 and four side walls 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d which extend perpendicularly from upper wall 10 in a downward direction towards bottom part 8. Upper wall 10 and side walls 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d enclose inner space 3 of connection element 2. Each of side walls 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d has height hl, width wl, and each side wall 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d is provided with a respective opening 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d for inserting a connector and/or part of a lighting element. Each side wall 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d is also provided with two openings 16 for connecting a profile part to the respective wall of connection element 2. In the example, openings 16 are provided as lock-formed openings 16, which allow a mated fastening element provided on a profile part to be inserted in the upper part of opening 16, after which it can be slided to a holding position in a lower part of opening 16, thus providing a stable and secure connection. The fastening element, which preferably is a bolt or screw, is subsequently fastened to provide a rigid connection between connection element 2 and the profile part. Furthermore, in an example of connection element 2, earthing cable 13 is provided which provides an earthing connection for bottom wall 8. In this example (shown in figure 7), bottom wall 8 is provided with a projection 31 configured for connecting to earthing cable 13. Side wall 12c is provided with a projection, in this example a bolt, which connects earthing cable 13 with side wall 12c for earthing bottom wall 8.
Optionally, adjustment elements may be provided on the profile part, which cooperate with adjustment element openings 18 for adjusting the position of the profile part relative to connection element 2. Furthermore, connection element 2 is provided with hanging element 22 for hanging connection element 2 from a ceiling.
Side walls 12a, 12c are in this example provided with extensions 24 that are bent in a substantially horizontal position so as to be parallel to bottom part 8. Extensions 24 are connected to upper side 8a of bottom part 8 by means of industrial grade double sided tape 26, which is clearly visible in figures 5 and 7. In order to line up extensions 24 and bottom part 8 in a correct manner, extensions 24 are provided with notch 28, which cooperates with projection 30 positioned on bottom part 8. This allows easy and accurate positioning of bottom part 8 relative to extensions 24 and therewith upper part 6. The number of projections may vary and preferably is in the range of 2-4.
The installation of connection element 2 and a hanging ceiling comprise a number of, preferably subsequent, steps. In a first step, a plurality of connection elements 2 is connected to a ceiling using respective hanging elements 22. The distance between various connection elements 2 is chosen such that it matches the size/length of a profile part that is to be installed between connection elements 2. In a second step, fastening elements of the profile parts are inserted in lockformed openings 16 and subsequently slided downwards. The fastening elements, preferably a bolt or screw, is than fastened which can easily be done from an underside of connection element 2 which provides access to inner space 3. Depending on the type of profile parts installed, a number of subsequent actions is possible. In case a profile part having a traditional lighting element such as a fluorescent light is installed, an electrical cable is provided from the light through an opening in upper wall 10 and subsequently connected to an energy supply, for example a cable. When a profile part having an integrated light guiding rail is installed, a subsequent step comprises installing a light and inserting a corresponding lighting element connector in an opening 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d of a respective side wall 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d. Preferably, part of the connector is provided in the guiding rail and part of the connector is provided in opening 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d by sliding or clicking. The connector is connected to an energy supply and/or other connectors in inner space 3 of connection element 2 from an underside of connection element 2.
The installation of the hanging ceiling is than finished by closing off inner space 3 by installing bottom part 8.
Maintenance of the hanging ceiling can, at least to a large extent, be done from below. The present invention is by no means limited to the above described preferred embodiments thereof.
