Description
Shoe for skating or cycling
The invention relates to a shoe for skating, in particular ice skating or roller skating, e.g. inline skating, or cross country skiing, or for cycling. The shoe comprises an upper, a closure for fastening the shoe, e.g. (shoe)laces or velcro, a sole, a sports implement, in particular a blade, wheels, ski or cleat, attached to the sole or one or more fixing elements, such as threaded openings or nuts, for attaching a sports implement to the sole, and a cover extending over the closure.
The Viking Gold 2000 and 2005 ice skates have a cover that is integrated in the upper of the shoe of the ice skate and that is provided with a zipper to open the cover and allow access to the shoelaces. The cover improves aerodynamics of the ice skate and protects the shoelaces from dirt and loosening. A similar lace cover is shown in US D442,772 S.
In shoes for skating and cycling such covers are subject to damage and dirt.
It is an object of the present invention to provide and improved shoe for skating or cycling.
To this end, the shoe according to the present invention is characterized in that the cover is attached or attachable to the shoe by means of a separable fastener.
Thus, the cover can be replaced, e.g. when it is damaged, or removed from the shoe, cleaned or repaired, and re-attached to the shoe.
In an embodiment, the fastener comprises a pair of releasably interlocking flexible strips, one attached to the upper of the shoe and the other attached to the cover.
To facilitate attaching the cover to the shoe by pushing on the fastener, in an embodiment, one of the strips comprises a rib and the other strip comprises a groove. In a refinement, one of the strips comprises a pair of ribs and the other strip comprises a pair of grooves.
In another embodiment, at least one rib, preferably each rib, and at least one groove, preferably each groove, have at least substantially the same size and shape. It is preferred that the strips are identical.
Flexible (polymer) strips of this type were found to be better adaptable to the shape of the upper of the shoe and to the shape of the cover than e.g. a zipper. Further, the strips can slide relative to each other lengthwise, i.e. in the direction wherein the strips extend, thus reducing tension in the strips, upper, and cover. Also, these strips enable a water resistant configuration, which is a considerable advantage for skaters and cyclists in wet conditions (snow, rain, thaw).
In an embodiment, each strip comprises a base, a rib extending from the base, and a groove, the rib comprising a portion that extends towards the base. The rib thus effectively provides a positive lock or even a hook that reinforces the lock between the strips when the strips are subjected to a pulling force perpendicular to the base.
In another embodiment, at least one of the strips comprises a boss extending continuously or intermittently along the strip to engage a rib of the other strip when the strips are misaligned and the wrong rib is pressed into the wrong groove but allowing interlocking when both rib(s) and groove(s) are aligned.
In another embodiment, one of the strips extends along the upper and the other strip extends along the edge of the cover. To improve water resistance and/or aerodynamics, in a refinement, the strips extend along at least the front half of the cover.
In another embodiment, the strips are extrusion profiles and/or made from a thermoplastic polymer, such as a polyolefin, e.g. polypropylene, a polyamide, a polyester or an elastomer.
In yet another embodiment, to further reduce tension between the strips and the upper and cover, the strips have been pre-shaped, to follow, at least to some extent, the shape of the edge of the cover and the shape of the upper before being attached thereto. I.e., the strips are plastically deformed, e.g. by heating, shaping, and cooling in a desired shape, before the strips are attached to the upper and to the cover.
In an embodiment, the cover comprises a pull tab to facilitate removing the cover from the upper.
In another embodiment, the sole comprises a fibre reinforced plate or scale, which renders it rigid to more efficiently transfer power from the wearer to the sports implement, e.g. to the blade, ski or pedal.
The invention also relates to a cover for a closure of a shoe for skating or cycling, characterized in that a half of a separable fastener extends along the edge of the cover .
Thus, the cover can be removably attached to an at least partially complementary half of a separable fastener on the upper of the shoe for skating or cycling to cover the closure of that shoe.
In an embodiment, the half of the separable fastener comprises a flexible strip. The strip preferably has one or more of the features described above.
For the sake of completeness, attention is drawn to the following prior art. US 5,701,688 relates to a shoelace cover having a translucent window. The cover is detachably secured to the upper of a shoe to display and protect the lacings. The shoelace cover comprises a generally triangular edge element, a translucent window composed of tubular elements and connected to the edge element, and fasteners attached beneath the edge element to detachably secure the cover over the throat area of a shoe upper. US 5,566,477 relates to a shoelace cover incorporating an interchangeable fashion panel for covering the shoelaces of a gym shoe.
Within the framework of the present invention the term "shoe" includes boots, e.g. boots for figure skating or inline skating, and the term "skating" includes roller skating, e.g. inline skating, and cross-country skiing.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the Figures, which show an ice skate according to the present invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective front view of a first embodiment of an ice skate according to the present invention .
Figure 2 is perspective rear view of a second embodiment of an ice skate according to the present invention, wherein the cover comprises a pull tab.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of a separable fastener as used in the ice skates in Figures 1 and 2.
It is noted that the Figures are schematic in nature and that details, which are not necessary for understanding the present invention, may have been omitted.
Figures 1 and 2 shows an ice skate, in this example a so-called klap skate 1, comprising a shoe 2 having an upper 3, a closure for fastening the shoe on a foot, in this case shoelaces (hidden from view), and a sole 4 made of a fibre (e.g. aramid and/or carbon) reinforced scale. A bracket 5 and, via the bracket, a blade 6 are attached to the bottom-side of the sole. A cover 10 extends over the shoelaces and is attached to the shoe 2 by means of a separable fastener 11 comprising a pair of releasably interlocking flexible strips 12, 13 (see also Figure 3). One of the strips 12 is attached to and follows the leading edge of the cover, from a location just above the shoelaces on one side of the upper 3, down to the tip of the upper and up again on the other side of the upper once again to a location just above the shoelaces. A pull tab 14 is provided on the cover 10 near one of these locations, in the embodiment shown in Figure 2 on the left-hand side of the cover. The other strip 13 is attached to the upper 3, aligned with and complementary to the strip 12 on the cover 10.
As shown in Figure 3, the strips 12, 13 are identical and each comprises a base 15, a pair of ribs 16 extending from the base, and a pair of grooves 17 defined by the ribs. The ribs comprise a portion 18 that extends towards the base, thus effectively providing hooks that reinforce the lock between the strips when the strips are subjected to a pulling force perpendicular to the base.
The strips have been pre-shaped, to follow, at least to some extent, the shape of the edge of the cover and the shape of the upper before being attached thereto.
The strips are preferably extrusion profiles made from a thermoplastic polymer, such as a polyolefin, e.g. polypropylene, a polyamide, a polyester or an elastomer, and/or attached to the cover and the upper of the shoe by means of stitching.
The cover according to the present invention can be replaced, e.g. when it is damaged, or removed from the shoe, cleaned or repaired, and re-attached to the shoe.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiments described above and can be varied in numerous ways within the scope of the claims. E.g., the strips can be provided with a slide to facilitate locking and unlocking of the strips .
