Description

Moon pool for a ship or marine platform and sliding hatch cover there for, and method for lowering and lifting tools and/or instruments
The present invention relates to a moon pool for a ship or marine platform. A moon pool is used in ships including drill ships, diving support vessels, cable laying vessel, pipe laying vessel, and research vessels, and also marine platforms including drilling platforms. A moon pool provides an opening in the ship or platform giving access to the room and/or water below.
Conventional moon pools are known from drilling platforms that are often located above the sea level. Also known are moon pools that are applied to ships or vessels. These moon pools can be located below the water line. A problem with conventional moon pools is related to safety issues associated with the presence of an opening to the water below. Some of the conventional moon pools are provided with separate hatches that are placed on the opening and/or pivotable hatches. This requires additional handling and manoeuvring of the hatches or covers. Furthermore, these hatches still involve safety risks when working with a moon pool.
It is an objective of the present invention to improve the safety and/or efficiency of a moon pool, thereby obviating or at least reducing the aforementioned problems.
This is achieved with the moon pool for a ship or marine platform according to the present invention, wherein the moon pool comprising: an opening giving access to a room and/or water below; a guiding construction configured for lowering and lifting tools and/or instruments to and from the room and/or water; a hatch cover configured for covering the opening, wherein the guiding construction is at least partly provided in the opening and comprises a moveable guiding part that can be moved between an activated position enabling lowering and lifting tools and/or instruments and a stored position enabling the hatch cover to cover the opening.
Providing an opening in a ship or marine platform enables access to the room and/or water below the opening. This opening is provided in a ship or marine platform including drill ships, diving support vessels, cable laying vessel, pipe laying vessel, research vessels and marine platforms, such as marine drilling platforms. Lifting tools and/or instruments include remote operated vehicles (ROV), diving bells, drilling equipment, measuring equipment such as a sonar. The lifting tools and/or instruments can be lowered to the water and/or lifted therefrom, using the guiding construction of the moon pool.
According to the present invention, the guiding construction is at least partly provided in the opening and comprises a movable guiding part. By providing a movable guiding part, at least two different states or modes of operation can be distinguished.
In an activated position of the moveable guiding part, the movable guiding part is brought in line with the guiding construction, preferably in line with a guiding rail thereof. When the movable guiding part is in the activated position, lifting tools and/or instruments can be moved effectively from and/or to the water.
In a retracted or stored position, the movable guiding part is moved relative to the opening or stationary part of the guiding construction. According to the invention, in this retracted position of the moveable guiding part, a sliding hatch cover can be positioned over or in the opening, thereby obviating or preventing safety risks associated with the presence of a moon pool in a ship or marine platform.
The sliding hatch cover is configured to cover the opening of the moon pool with the movable guiding part being in the retracted position. More specifically, when sliding the hatch cover over the opening, the movable guiding part is in the retracted position or being moved towards the retracted position. Moving the moveable guiding part from the opening removes the guiding structure from the opening to enable access to the hatch cover and enabling an effective positioning thereof. Providing the moveable guiding part in accordance with the invention also contributes to a safety improvement by preventing safety risks.
The sliding hatch cover preferably moves along rails using a number of wheels that are attached to the sliding hatch cover. This renders the positioning and manoeuvring of the hatch cover easy and improves possibilities for automated safety control by closing the opening after finishing the operations involving the moon pool. The sliding hatch cover is preferably provided with a drive, preferably using one or more hydraulic cylinders, screw spindles using electro or hydro motors, a gear rack with electro or hydro motors or any other convenient drive.
The use of a sliding hatch cover enables an effective closing of the opening of the moon pool. This closure of the opening reduces the air flow caused by waves in the moon pool, for example. Also, the sliding hatch cover provides a safe environment for the crew of the ship or marine platform. Also, it provides a protection from water entering or damaging equipment in or on the ship or platform. Preferably, a number of sensors is provided to determine and control the actual position of the sliding hatch cover. This further improves the safety of working with the moon pool. Although the sliding hatch cover is preferably applied to a moon pool enabling access to the water below, it is also possible to apply the sliding hatch cover to other openings that may provide access to a room below, such as a ship’s hold.
In a presently preferred embodiment, the guiding construction comprises a drive for moving the movable guiding part. The drive may involve the use of hydraulic cylinders or screw spindles with electro or hydro motors. The movable guiding part preferably involves a rail, or so-called cursor rail. By providing a drive, the movement of the movable guiding part can be automated and included in the operation involving the moon pool according to the present invention. Preferably, the moon pool is provided with sensors monitoring the actual state or position of movable elements of the moon pool, for example the movable guiding part and/or the sliding hatch cover as mentioned earlier.
In one of the presently preferred embodiments, the movable guiding part comprises a hinge for enabling a rotational movement of the movable guiding part relative to the opening or stationary part of the guiding construction. The rotational movement enables bringing the movable guiding part in line with the stationary part, thereby enabling lowering and lifting of tools and/or instruments.
In an alternative embodiment, the movable guiding part comprises a telescopic element, configured for enabling a telescopic movement of the movable guiding part relative to the opening or stationary part of the guiding construction. This telescopic movement provides an effective movement of the guiding part between the activated and retracted positions.
In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention, the moon pool further comprises a hatch housing for storing the sliding hatch cover after activating the moon pool.
By providing a hatch housing, the sliding hatch cover can be retracted effectively. Further, the hatch housing may be used to carry equipment. Furthermore, the hatch housing may provide a water tight connection, thereby improving safety and/or improving possibilities for the applicability of the moon pool. The use of a hatch housing is especially beneficial when the opening is provided in the ship’s bottom hull. For example, such application is used for providing sonar equipment in a research vessel and/or may relate to a so-called bow thruster. It will be understood that other applications involving such housing could also be envisaged in accordance with the invention.
In a further preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the sliding hatch cover comprises at least two cover parts.
By providing a number of cover parts, for example two cover parts, the sliding hatch cover can be positioned and manoeuvred more effectively. Furthermore, in one of the presently preferred embodiments, the sliding hatch cover is moved over two separate sliding hatch cover guide sets that are configured for moving cover parts to different sides of the opening. For example, by providing the sliding hatch cover with two cover parts, one of the parts can be moved to the left hand side of the opening and the other part can be moved to the right hand side of the opening when activating the moon pool.
In a further presently preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the sliding hatch cover comprises a carrying structure capable of carrying tools and/or instruments.
By providing a carrying structure, equipment such as tools and/or instruments can be moved effectively over the ship or platform.
The present invention further relates to a sliding hatch cover for a moon pool and/or a ship or marine platform comprising a moon pool with a sliding hatch cover as described earlier.
Such sliding hatch cover and/or ship or marine platform provides the same effects or advantages as described for the moon pool. The sliding hatch cover may also be applied to cover other openings in a ship’s deck, such as for a ship’s hold.
In particular, the ship or marine platform with the moon pool provides a safe working environment.
The invention further also relates to a method for lowering and lifting tools and/or instruments, the method comprising the steps of: providing a moon pool as described earlier; removing the hatch cover from the opening; moving the moveably guiding part into the activated position in the opening; lowering and/or lifting tools and/or instruments; moving the moveably guiding part into the retracted position; and covering the opening with the hatch cover.
The method provides the same effects and advantages as described for the moon pool, ship or marine platform.
Further advantages, features and details are elucidated on the basis of preferred embodiments thereof, wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which: - figure 1 shows the moon pool according to the present invention in opened/activated position; - figure 2 shows the moon pool of figure 1 in a closed position; - figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment of the moon pool in an opened position; - figure 4 shows the moon pool of figure 3 in a closed position; - figure 5A-E shows different embodiments of the movable guiding parts; - figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of a moon pool provided in the ship’s bottom hull.
Ship 2 (Figure 1) is provided with moon pool 4 comprising lower opening 6, channel or chamber 8 extending between lower opening 6 and upper opening 10. In the illustrated embodiment sliding hatch cover 12, 14 comprises first hatch 12 and second hatch 14 that are movable along two guide rails 16 with the use of hydraulic cylinder 18 as a drive. Hydraulic cylinder 18 is at a first end connected via connection 20 to ship 2 and at a second end via connection 22 to sliding hatch cover 12, 14.
Guiding construction or guide rails 24 are provided in opening 10, comprising movable guiding part 26. In the illustrated embodiment, two guide rails 24 are provided. It will be understood that another number of guide rails 24 in opening 10 could also be envisaged. Moveable guiding part 26 is moved with the use of drive 28 that is connected to frame 30 of ship 2. In the illustrated embodiment, sensors 32, 34 are provided to monitor the actual position of movable part 26 and sliding hatch cove 12, 14, respectively.
After the operation with moon pool 4 has terminated, outer opening 10 is covered by moving sliding hatch cover 12, 14 (Figure 2) over opening 10. This provides a safe working environment for people on ship 2. In this position, movable guide parts 26 have been rotated around pivot axes 36 with hinges 38. This movement is performed with the use of hydraulic drive 28. In the illustrated embodiment this movement brings movable part 26 from a substantially vertical position in line with rail 24 (Figure 1) into a substantially horizontal direction in the retracted or stored position (Figure 2). It will be understood that other positions of movable part 26, especially in the retracted or stored position, can also be envisaged in accordance with the present invention.
In another embodiment, moon pool 40 (Figures 3 and 4) is provided with sliding hatch cover 12, 14 that can be moved in opposite directions, using guide rails 16a, 16b, respectively. This movement of covers 12, 14 of sliding hatch cover in opposite direction provides an alternative to moon pool 4 with movement of a single or coupled sliding hatch cover 12, 14.
After operations with moon pool 40 have been terminated, hatch covers 12, 14 are moved towards each other, thereby closing opening 10 of moon pool 40. Configuration of moon pool 40 with sideways relative movement of sliding hatch cover parts 12, 14 has the advantage that opening 10 can be closed faster. A further advantage is that the amount of space that is required can be reduced.
In the illustrated embodiments of moon pool 4, 40, movable guide part 26 is moved involving a rotational movement. It will be understood that other movements could also be envisaged in accordance with the invention (Figure 5A-E). An overview (Figure 5A) illustrates the different possibilities of rotational and/or translational (including telescopic) movement of guide part 26 relative to rail 24. For example, moveable guide part 26 may rotate horizontally towards the side of guide 24 (Figure 5B). Also, movable guiding part 26 may rotate upwards or downwards to the side of guide rail 24 (Figure 5C). In a further alternative embodiment, movable guiding part 26 moves upwards or downwards towards the front or back of guide rail 24 (Figure 5D). Also, movable guiding part 26 may move in a translational direction parallel to guide rail 24 (Figure 5E), including a telescopic movement.
In a further embodiment, moon pool 42 comprises box 44 (Figure 6). Tool 46 is movably attached to box 44. For example, tool 46 may relate to sonar equipment. Sliding hatch cover 48 is capable of covering and releasing opening 50 by extending and retracting hatch 48 with cylinder 52 into housing 54. In the illustrated embodiment, housing 54 is fully sealed with seal 56 to provide a water tight environment. In the illustrated embodiment, moon pool 42 is provided in the ship’s bottom hull 58.
When measurements or other operations are required, hatch cover 48 is retracted into housing 54 by activating cylinder(s) 52. Tool 46 is lowered into the water and measurements can be performed. Afterwards, tool 46 is retracted into box 44 and hatch cover 48 is returned to its position, covering opening 50. This protects tool 46 and prevents, or at least reduces, the effects of waves acting on the ship.
The present invention is by no means limited to the above described preferred embodiments thereof. The rights sought are defined by the following claims, within the scope of which many modifications can be envisaged. For example, sliding hatch covers 12, 14 are preferably made of steel. However, the use of other materials as an alternative or in combination with steel could also be envisaged, including the use of composite materials.
