Abstract
An RFID tag (1) mounted or mountable on surgical or medical equipment or on a surgical or medical instrument (2) comprising: - a metal ring shaped holder (3), - a housing (4) made of an electrically nonconductive or slightly conductive material, and - an RFID element (5) embedded in the housing (4), wherein the housing (4) is substantially or essentially contained within the metal ring shaped holder (3).
Description
An RFID tag mounted or mountable on surgical or medical equipment or on a surgical or medical instrument
The invention relates to an RFID tag mounted or mountable on surgical or medical equipment or on a surgical or medical instrument comprising: a metal ring shaped holder, a housing made of an electrically nonconductive or slightly conductive material, and an RFID element embedded in the housing. US 9,033,251 discloses such an RFID tag and mentions as advantages that surgical instruments on which RFID tags are mounted are easy identifiable and traceable, without requiring any particular skill of the personnel. A notable advantage is that instruments with RFID tags mounted thereon reduce the risk that instruments remain in the body of the patient after surgery. Furthermore inventory and maintenance management can be improved when RFID tags are applied on the surgical or medical instruments and equipment. Examples are medical or rigid endoscopes and surgical power tools, but this is not an exhaustive enumeration. A problem with the known RFID tag disclosed by US 9,033,251 is that it is relatively sensitive to destruction of the housing in which the RFID element is embedded, caused by repetitive autoclave treatment which is required for certain surgical equipment and instruments.
It is an object of the invention to provide a solution for this problem.
It is another object of the invention to provide an alternative for the RFID tag known from the prior art.
The RFID tag of the invention has the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the RFID tag which comprises : a metal ring shaped holder, a housing made of an electrically nonconductive or slightly conductive material, and an RFID element embedded in the housing, is provided with the feature that the housing is substantially or essen- tially contained within the metal ring shaped holder. This provides the advantage that the housing is better protected by the metal ring shaped holder against the abrasive influences of the repetitive autoclave treatment required for medical and surgical equipment.
Although in the prior art the housing is said to be of plastic or ceramic, these are not the only possible materials. In certain embodiments it is preferred to apply epoxy resin for the housing. Epoxy resin is relatively cheap and is easy to mold into the required shape without leaving undesired air holes in the material or adjacent to the RFID element.
Preferably the metal ring shaped holder has a bottom edge and a top edge and a ring-shaped wall which tapers with a decreasing diameter from the bottom edge to the top edge. This tapering shape counteracts unintended removal of the housing out of the metal ring shaped holder.
It is also possible that the metal ring shaped holder has a bottom edge and a top edge wherein the bottom edge is mounted or arranged to be mounted on the surgical or medical equipment or instrument, and the top edge is provided with an inwardly protruding ridge to provide an aperture delimited by the top edge with a smaller diameter than the bottom edge.
This feature can be applied on its own standing or in combination with the previously mentioned feature of the tapering ring-shaped wall.
The invention is also embodied in surgical or medical equipment or a surgical or medical instrument provided with an RFID tag according to the invention. Non-limiting examples are medical or rigid endoscopes or surgical power tools.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of exemplary embodiments of an application of a RFID tag according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows surgical scissors provided with an RFID tag according to the invention; -figure 2 and 3 provide top-views of the RFID tag according to the invention placed on medical optics and medical bore-equipment respectively; -figure 4 shows in cross-sectional view a first embodiment of the RFID tag according to the invention; -figure 5 shows in cross-sectional view a second embodiment of the RFID tag according to the invention; and -figure 6 shows in cross-sectional view a third embodiment of the RFID tag according to the invention.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Making first reference to figure 1 an RFID tag 1 is shown mounted on surgical scissors 2. In figure 2 and 3 the RFID tag 1 is positioned on medical optics and medical bore-equipment respectively.
The RFID tag 1 is in several embodiments shown in figures 4, 5 and 6. The different embodiments of the RFID tag 1 of the invention share the features that it comprises: a metal ring shaped holder 3, a housing 4 made of an electrically nonconductive or slightly conductive material, and an RFID element 5 embedded in the housing 4. Another feature that all embodiments share is that the housing 4 is substantially or essentially contained within the metal ring shaped holder 3. The housing 4 can be of several materials, such as plastic or ceramic, however it is preferred that the housing 4 is of epoxy resin.
Figure 4 shows the embodiment that the metal ring shaped holder 3 has a bottom edge 3' and a top edge 3'' and a ring-shaped wall 6 which tapers with a decreasing diameter from the bottom edge 3' to the top edge 3''.
Figure 5 shows the embodiment that the metal ring shaped holder 3 has a bottom edge 3' and a top edge 3' ' wherein the bottom edge 3' (as is also the case in the embodiments of figure 4 and figure 6) is mounted on the surgical scissors 2, and the top edge 3'' is provided with an inwardly protruding ridge 7 to provide the top edge 3'' with a smaller diameter of an aperture 8 delimited by the top edge 3'' than the bottom edge 3'.
Finally figure 6 shows the combination of the features of the embodiments shown in figures 4 and 5.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to exemplary embodiments of the RFID tag of the invention and its use, the invention is not restricted to these particular embodiments which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiments shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiments are merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using these exemplary embodiments.
