Description
Crane and method for increasing a load lifting capacity of such a crane
The invention relates to a crane comprising a boom pivotably mounted on a base for changing the boom's reach. Distant from the base, the boom supports a jib that connects through a hinge with the boom and guides a pendant for a load, and wherein the boom is connected or connectable to a counterweight. The pendant connects through a jib hoist and a boom hoist to the counterweight.
The crane can be a revolver crane or a conventional crane without revolving capacity. Various examples of a crane according to the preamble provide U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,842,984; 4,258,852 and 4,540,097.
There are several disadvantages of such conventional cranes. One of the disadvantages is that increasing the reach of the boom results in decreased loadbearing capacity. Another disadvantage is that increasing the length of the boom also results in decreased loadbearing capacity. These features of the conventional crane have the consequence that lifting and replacing heavy loads becomes more difficult when the load has to be lifted at a notable distance from the base on which the boom is mounted.
In practice there is a need for a crane which can be used for lifting heavy loads wherein the impact of changing the reach of the boom is reduced, that is to say without materially compromising the loadbearing capacity of the crane.
Another object of the invention is to increase the loadbearing capacity of the crane.
These and other objects of the invention which will become apparent from the following disclosure, are provided with a crane and a method for increasing the load lifting capacity of such crane in accordance with one or more of the appended claims .
The invention is embodied in a crane, which is provided with a support tower at a predefined distance from the base, wherein the boom is set at an angle with reference to the base so as to arrange that the hinge for connecting the boom with the jib, and an upperside of the support tower are at substantially the same height. This provides the possibility that the boom and the support tower support a gantry beam.
Preferably the gantry beam is provided with a lift device that is movable along the gantry beam. It is found that the invention provides a simple and very effective way for increasing the load lifting capacity of such a crane.
The inventors have found that by providing the crane with a support tower at a predefined distance from the base; setting the boom at an angle with reference to the base so as to arrange that the hinge for connecting the boom with the jib, and an upperside of the support tower are at substantially the same height; and mounting a gantry beam on the boom and the support tower respectively, it is possible to significantly increase the load bearing capacity of the crane, in comparison when same is not completed with the support tower and the gantry beam.
As a further feature and beneficial aspect of the invention it is found preferable to provide the gantry beam with a lift device that is movable along the gantry beam.
This provides a secure and reliable hoisting capacity along the entire length of the gantry beam.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a crane according to the prior art; -figure 2 shows the crane of figure 1 in the initial motions to convert it into a crane according to the invention with an increased loadbearing capacity; -figures 3 and 4 show further steps for converting the crane to increase its loadbearing capacity; -figures 5 and 6 show the crane wherein the conver sion is completed; and -figures 7 and 8 show the crane of the invention in use.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Making first reference to figure 1, a conventional crane 1 is schematically shown. This crane 1 comprises a boom 3 pivotably mounted on a base 2 for changing the boom's reach. Distant from the base 2, the boom 3 supports a jib 4 that connects through a hinge 5 with the boom 3 and guides a pendant 6 for a load. In the conventional way the boom 3 is connected or connectable to a counterweight 7 for balancing the load. The pendant 6 connects through a jib hoist 13 and a boom hoist 14 to the counterweight 7.
In figure 2 a first step is visualized wherein the crane 1 is provided with a support tower 8 at a predefined distance from the base 2. The support tower 8 is placed in position using the crane 1 according to its intended design using the hoisting cable, comprising the pendant 6, jib hoist 13 and boom hoist 14 of the crane 1.
In figure 3 the support tower 8 is released from the pendant 6, which is then used to connect to a gantry beam 9, which is subsequently lifted to its intended position that is shown in figure 4, wherein the boom 3 is set at an angle with reference to the base 2 so as to arrange that the hinge 5 for connecting the boom 3 with the jib 4, and the erected support tower 8 are at substantially the same height. Accordingly, the boom 3 and the support tower 8 are then positioned to support the gantry beam 9, which is shown in figure 5. The pendant 6 can then be released from its normal function for hoisting of loads, particularly by arranging that this task can then be assigned to a lift device 10 that is movably provided on the gantry beam 9, as is shown in figure 6 wherein the lift device 10 lifts a load 12.
To complete the picture figures 7 and 8 show that the lift device 10 is used to lift and replace a high and heavy lift object 12, a task which would be impossible to complete with the crane 1 of the prior art shown in figure 1.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the crane of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary, the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
