Description

Title: Closing assembly
The invention relates to a closing assembly, for example for closing a door or a window, comprising a socket arranged to be mounted on a stationary frame, and a closing structure arranged to be mounted on a movable panel, wherein the closing structure includes a closing mechanism, arranged to cooperate with the socket to keep the movable panel in a closed position, and a housing arranged to hold the closing mechanism.
Such an assembly is generally known, and has previously been developed by, among others, the applicant, see for example in the patent NL1009705. During use, the panel can be movable (e.g. swivable) with respect to a stationary frame element in case the closing assembly is in a panel releasing condition, wherein the panel can be locked in a closed position by properly operating the closing assembly (allowing cooperation between the closing mechanism and the socket when they have been moved towards each upon closing of the panel). The known assembly includes a separate mounting plate that is to be mounted onto the panel. A possible problem with such a prior art system is its relatively low resistance to deformation and/or breaking attempts, for example by unwanted intruders. In attempts to open the closing assembly by force, the construction of the known closing assembly can suffer from deformation. By trying to make such a closing assembly more resistant, it risks to become relatively hard/long to mount, for example on a door or a window, and/or get a heavy and cumbersome appearance. US2008/0169658 discloses a locking system for locking together the sashes of a window includes a base assembly, a cover assembly, and a keeper. The base assembly includes a cam receiver with an interchangeable cam that can engage the keeper so as to lock the window. The cover assembly includes an interchangeable shroud adapted to fit over the base assembly and a handle for rotating the cam. The base assembly, the cover assembly, and the keeper include additional features that resist forced entry through the window.
It is an aim of the present invention to solve or alleviate one or more of the above-mentioned problems. Particularly, the invention aims at providing an improved closing assembly, which substantially slows down an attempt of unwanted intrusion. It is also an aim of the present invention to provide a closing assembly, which is relatively easy and straightforward to install, thus saving money in the installation costs. Another object of the invention is to provide an elegant, yet safe, closing assembly.
To this aim, according to an aspect of the present invention, , there is provided a closing assembly characterized by the features of claim 1.
The housing comprises a first wall and a second wall extending opposite one another, the housing (i.e. said first and second wall) consisting of a single piece, preferably of a single cast piece. More particularly, the housing can consist of a single rigid body that encloses or contains at least part of the closing mechanism.
In this way, deformation of the construction can be prevented or significantly reduced, for example during attempts to open the closing assembly by force. In the case of the present invention such force can be absorbed by the entire housing, for example via the second wall of the housing in case the housing is fixed to a movable panel via that second wall. Also, in this way, the closing mechanism can be held firmly by the housing onto the panel, preventing undesired dislocation of that closing mechanism. This substantially slows down an attempt of unwanted intrusion.
The housing further comprises a first flange and a second flange extending opposite one another and extending between said first wall and said second wall. These first and second walls, together with these first and second flanges, define an inner space to receive at least part of the closing mechanism, which leads to a robust construction of the closing assembly according to the invention. The first and second flanges for example extend under a right angle between a first wall and a second wall. In case of rectangular side walls of the housing, the first and second flanges may e.g. be located at/between shorter edges/sides of such walls. The first and second flanges can be integral flanges or opened-out flanges.
Preferably, the one-piece housing comprises at least one longitudinal opening (e.g. a slit), preferably two longitudinal openings extending opposite one another, arranged to let part of said closing mechanism pass through. These longitudinal openings are preferably located between the first and the second wall in a right angle with the first and second flanges. The passing through of part of the closing mechanism through these openings allows a cooperation between the closing mechanism and the socket to keep the movable panel in a closed position.
More preferably, the housing, preferably said first and/or said second flange, comprises a plurality, for example four, preferably six, of passages for fixing means, for example screws, to fix the housing, particularly an outer side of the second wall, on a movable panel, for example on a door or window. The passages for fixing means are preferably located near corners (if any) of the first wall.
One or more passages for fixing means may also be located near the middle of shorter edges of a said first wall. The passages preferably go through the first and the second wall, in particular to position fixing means at right angles with the first and second walls. The passages may be incorporated in the possibly integral first and second flanges, but need not. They can also pass through the inner space defined by the first and second flanges and the first and second walls.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention, there is a passage for fixing means in every corner of the housing, every passage going through the first and second wall at right angles, two of them e.g. being incorporated in a said first flange (if present), and two of them being incorporated in a said second flange (if present). This particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention further includes two more passages for fixing means on a longitudinal middle line of the housing.
In this way, the housing can be mounted securely on a movable panel passing fixing means, for example screws, through, for example, four out of six passages for fixing means. When a closing assembly is for example to be mounted at a safe distance from, for example, a pane in a movable panel, the four corner passages can be used. However, when a closing assembly is to be mounted, for example, near a pane in a movable panel, two passages on a side remote from, for example, such a pane, in combination with two passages on a longitudinal middle line of the housing, can be used to safely mount the closing assembly on a movable panel.
In an advantageous embodiment of the present invention the housing is symmetrical with respect to a longitudinal axis of the housing, particularly comprising two longitudinal openings extending opposite one another, such that said same housing can be used for a leftward closing mechanism as well as for a rightward closing mechanism, for example letting part of said closing mechanism pass through one or the other longitudinal opening.
Such a symmetrical housing reduces production costs as the same production system, for example a casting mould, can be used to produce housings for different configurations of movable panels and stationary frames, for example doors and windows. Also the mounting of the closing assembly on, for example a door or a window, becomes flexible and easy.
Preferably, the closing assembly is equipped with a handle arranged to operate the closing mechanism, for example to open or close a door or window.
The handle can have various shapes, for example round, or L-shaped. The handle can be provided with a supplementary locking mechanism, for example a cylinder lock, and with an optional ridge, for example to keep the movable panel in a ventilation position in cooperation with the socket.
In a preferred embodiment, the closing mechanism comprises a mounting axle, on which said handle is mountable. Then, preferably, the mounting axle comprises an internally threaded passage containing a set screw for fixing the handle on the mounting axle. By including the set screw in the mounting axle rather than in the handle, the handle can have a slimline look.
It is also preferred that the second wall of the housing comprises a closing bush, which improves the solidity of the housing spreading possible forces exerted by an unwanted intruder on the entire housing including the second wall, of which an outer side is mounted against the movable panel.
Advantageously, the closing mechanism comprises a bolt arranged to cooperate with said socket to keep the movable panel in a closed position, for example for closing doors or windows.
The shape of the bolt, and the way in which it cooperates with the socket, can vary. For example, the bolt can engage a groove or slot in the socket. The bolt may for example also be L-shaped to hitch into a corresponding hook in the socket. In a first, for example closed, position of a movable panel, the bolt protrudes from the inner space of the housing via for example a longitudinal opening, and is engaged with a cooperating counterpart, for example a groove or hook, in the socket. During operation, for example by operating the handle, the movable panel can for example be opened by turning the bolt at least partly into the inner space of the housing to disengage the socket.
In order to assure the solidity of the closing assembly, it is preferred that the housing is made of a robust material, substantially resistant against attempts of breaking, for example steel, or another metal or alloy, for example aluminium or Zamak™.
To further improve solidity, the first wall and second wall preferably both have a thickness in a range of 2-8 mm, wherein the second wall may optionally be thicker than the first wall. The inner space between the first wall and the second wall may have a thickness in the same range of 2-8 mm. This range of thickness preferably is a compromise between a highest possible level of solidity and thus safety, and an uncumbersome closing assembly.
In a preferred embodiment, the closing assembly further comprises a cap arranged to cover the housing after mounting on a movable panel. The cap can for example be clicked on the housing, or mounted on it in any other appropriate way, substantially covering the passages for fixing means. The cap can optionally also cover the first and second flanges, as well as a longitudinal opening as long as it does not hinder a movement of the closing mechanism protruding from the inner space of the housing. This cap has a double function of protecting part of the closing mechanism and mounting elements, for example screws, as well as an aesthetic function of giving a desired look to the closing assembly.
Another aspect of the present invention provides a system comprising a stationary frame, a movable panel, for example a door or a window, of which one side is hinged to the stationary frame and is openable, provided with a closing assembly according to one or more of the above-mentioned aspects. This system can provide the previously described advantages.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for mounting a closing assembly according to one or more of the above-mentioned aspects, including the steps of mounting a socket on a stationary frame, for example on a door frame or a window frame, mounting the housing including the closing mechanism on a movable panel, wherein a plurality, for example four, of fixing means, for example screws, are passed through passages for fixing means, for example screw holes, to fix the housing, particularly an outer side of the second wall, on a movable panel, and mounting the handle on the mounting axle of the closing mechanism. This method is relatively easy and straightforward, and is flexible enough to be easily adapted to various configurations of a movable panel and a stationary frame, for example an outwardly opening window hinged at the right side, or an outwardly opening door hinged at the left side, without having to adapt the construction itself of the closing assembly.
The present invention will be further elucidated with reference to figures of an exemplary embodiment. Therein, corresponding elements are designated with corresponding reference signs.

Figures 5a and 5b are front views on the housing from Figure 4a showing various configurations of applying fixing means;
Figure 6a is a side view of the housing of Figure 4a;
Figure 6b is a longitudinal cross-section over central axis X of the housing shown in Figure 4a;
Figures 7a, 7b and 7c show part of the mounting of a closing structure of Figure 2, in a perspective view (Figure 7a), in a cross-sectional view over line Y (Figure 7b), and in a partly opened front view (Figure 7c).
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an example of a closing assembly according to the invention. The closing assembly comprises a socket 1 arranged to be mounted on a stationary frame 2, and a closing structure 3a arranged to be mounted on a movable panel 3, for example on a door or window. The closing assembly is equipped with a handle 13 arranged to operate a closing mechanism 4 (see Figure 2), for example to open or close (unlock or lock) a door or window with respect to the stationary element 2. The handle 13 can have various shapes, for example round, or L-shaped.
The handle 13 can be provided with a supplementary locking mechanism 20 (to be operated by a key, not shown), for example a cylinder lock, and with an optional ridge 21, for example to keep the movable panel 3 in a ventilation position in cooperation with the socket 1.
In figure 1, the panel 3 is shown in a closed position with respect to the frame 2, the closing assembly being in a panel holding/locking condition (firmly holding the panel closed with respect of the frame 2). In case the closing mechanism 4 has been brought to a panel releasing position, the panel can be moved (particularly swiveled) from that closed position to an open panel position (not shown), as will be clear to the skilled person.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of three units forming the present closing structure 3a of the closing assembly of Figure 1: the handle 13, a cap 19, and an inner part of the closing structure 3a, which includes a closing mechanism 4, arranged to cooperate with the socket 1 to keep the movable panel 3 in a closed position (as in figure 1). The inner part of the closing structure 3a also includes a housing 5 comprising a first wall 6 and a second wall 7 extending opposite one another arranged to hold the closing mechanism 4. The cap 19 is arranged to cover the housing 5 after mounting on a movable panel 3, for example a window or a door. The cap 19 can for example be clicked on the housing 5, or mounted on it in any other appropriate way, substantially covering passages for fixing means. This cap 19 has a double function of protecting part of the closing mechanism 4 and mounting elements, for example screws, as well as an aesthetic function of giving a desired look to the closing assembly.
Figure 3 shows two perspective views on a housing 5 of the closing structure of Figure 2. In the example, the housing 5 has a substantially rectangular shape, with rounded-off corners. The housing 5 integrally comprises a first wall 6 and (in parallel) a second wall 7 extending opposite one another arranged to hold the closing mechanism 4 (see Figure 2). As follows from the drawing, the housing 5 consists of a single piece, preferably a single cast piece. In order to assure the solidity of the closing assembly, it is preferred that the single-piece housing 5 is made of a robust material, substantially resistant against attempts of breaking, for example steel, or another metal or alloy, for example aluminium or Zamak™. To further improve solidity, the first wall 6 and second wall 7 preferably both have a thickness in a range of 2-8 mm, for example the first wall 6 being about 4 mm thick and the second wall 7 having a thickness of about 6.5mm, wherein the second wall 7 may optionally be thicker than the first wall 6 (as in the present embodiment), or wherein the first wall 6 may optionally be thicker than the second wall 7.
The first wall 6 and second wall 7 enclose an inner space 10. The inner space 10 between the first wall 6 and the second wall 7 may e.g. have a thickness in the same range of 2-8 mm, for example a thickness of about 6 mm. This range of thickness preferably is a compromise between a highest possible level of solidity and thus safety, and an uncumbersome closing assembly.
The single-piece housing 5 further comprises a first flange 8 and a second flange 9 extending opposite one another and extending between said first wall 6 and said second wall 7 (both flanges 8, 9 bounding said inner space 10). The first and second flanges 8, 9 for example extend under a right angle between a first wall 6 and a second wall 7. The first and second flanges 8, 9 are preferably located at the shorter edges of the first or second wall 6,7. The first and second flanges 8, 9 can be integral flanges or opened-out flanges.
It is preferred that the integral, intermediate side walls/flanges 8, 9 of the housing 5 are both relatively sturdy. For example, a minimal width of each of these flanges 8, 9, may be at least about 3 mm, preferably at least 5 mm (the width being measured in a direction along the centre line X, shown in Fig. 4a). Preferably, the width of each of the flanges 8, 9 is larger than an afore-mentioned thickness of the first wall 6 and second wall 7.
The housing 5 also comprises at least one longitudinal opening 11 (a slit), preferably two longitudinal openings extending opposite one another, arranged to let part of said closing mechanism 4 pass through. These longitudinal openings 11 are preferably located between the first and the second wall 6,7 in a right angle with the first and second flanges 8,9.
The housing 5, preferably said first and/or said second flange 8, 9, comprises a plurality, for example four, preferably six as in Figure 3, of passages 12 for fixing means, for example screws, to fix the housing 5, particularly an outer side of the second wall 7, on a movable panel 3, for example on a door or window. The passages 12 for fixing means may be located near the corners of the first wall 6. One or more passages 12 for fixing means may also be located near the middle of the shorter edges of the first wall 6. The passages 12 preferably go through the first and the second wall 6,7, in particular to position fixing means at right angles with the first and second walls 6,7. The passages may be incorporated in the possibly integral first and second flanges 8, 9, but need not. They can also pass through the inner space 10 defined by the first and second flanges 8, 9 and the first and second walls 6,7. In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 3, there is a passage 12 for fixing means in every corner of the housing, every passage going through the first and second wall 6,7 at right angles, two of them being incorporated in a first flange 8, and two of them being incorporated in a second flange 9. This particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention further includes two more passages 12 for fixing means on a longitudinal middle line of the housing 5. In this way, the housing can be mounted securely on a movable panel passing fixing means, for example screws, through, for example, at least four out of six passages for fixing means.
Figures 4a and 4b are front views of the housing of Figure 3 including a closing mechanism 4, in two different positions. The closing mechanism 4 comprises a mounting axle 14, on which a handle 13 is mountable (see Figures 7a, 7b and 7c). The closing mechanism 4 further comprises a (in this case hooked) pivotable bolt 18 arranged to cooperate with said socket 1 to keep the movable panel 3 in a closed position, for example for closing doors or windows. The shape of the hooked bolt 18, and the way in which it cooperates with the socket 1, can vary. For example, the hooked bolt 18, passing through the longitudinal openings 11, can engage a groove or slot in the socket 1. The hooked bolt 18 may for example also be L-shaped to hitch into a corresponding hook in the socket 1. In a first, for example closed, position of a movable panel, the hooked bolt 18 protrudes from the inner space 10 of the housing 5 via for example a longitudinal opening 11, and is engaged with a cooperating counterpart, for example a groove or hook, in the socket 1. During operation, for example by operating the handle 13, the movable panel 3 can for example be opened by turning the hooked bolt 18 from the depicted position (in which the bolt 18 reaches out of the housing via an opening 11 to engage toe socket 1) into the inner space 10 of the housing 5 to disengage the socket 1.
Advantageously, the housing 5 is symmetrical with respect to a longitudinal axis X of the housing 5, particularly comprising two longitudinal openings 11 extending opposite one another, such that said same housing 5 can be used for a leftward closing mechanism (Figure 4a) as well as for a rightward closing mechanism (Figure 4b), for example letting part of said closing mechanism 4 pass through one or the other longitudinal opening 11. Such a symmetrical housing 5 reduces production costs as the same production system, for example a casting mould, can be used to produce housings for different configurations of movable panels and stationary frames, for example doors and windows. Also the mounting of the closing assembly on, for example a door or a window, becomes flexible and easy.
Figures 5a and 5b are front views on the housing from Figure 4a, further showing various configurations for installing fixing means. There is a passage 12 for fixing means in every corner of the housing, every passage going through the first and second wall 6,7 at right angles, two of them being incorporated in a first flange 8, and two of them being incorporated in a second flange 9. There are two more passages 12 for fixing means on a longitudinal middle line X of the housing 5. In this way, the housing can be mounted securely on a movable panel passing fixing means, for example screws 12a, through, for example, at least four out of six passages 12 for fixing means. When a closing assembly is for example to be mounted at a safe distance from, for example, a pane 22 in a movable panel 3, the four corner passages can be used, as in Figure 5a. However, when a closing assembly is to be mounted, for example, near a pane 22 in a movable panel 3, two passages on a side remote from, for example, such a pane 22, in combination with two passages on a longitudinal middle line X of the housing 5, can be used to safely mount the closing assembly on a movable panel 3.
Figure 6a is a side view of a housing and a closing mechanism as in Figure 4, of which Figure 6b is a cross section over line X in side view.
The closing mechanism 4 comprises a mounting axle 14, on which a handle 13 is mountable (see Figures 7a, 7b and 7c). The second wall 7 of the housing 5 comprises a through-hole rotatably containing a closing bush 17 with a fixation bolt 17’. The bolt 17’ connects into the mounting axle 14, firmly clamping an inner end of the axle 14 to the bush 17. This improves the solidity of the housing 5, as possible forces exerted by an unwanted intruder are spread on the entire housing 5 including the second wall 7, of which an outer side is mounted against the movable panel 3.
Figures 7a, 7b and 7c show part of the mounting of a closing structure of Figure 2, in a perspective view (Figure 7a), in a cross-sectional view over line Y (Figure 7b), and in an opened front view (Figure 7c). The closing mechanism 4, here already covered by a cap 19, comprises a mounting axle 14, on which a handle 13 is mountable. A mounting section of the handle 13 is mounted on that mounting axle 14 (Figures 7a-7b). The mounting axle 14 comprises an internally threaded passage 15 containing a set screw 16 for fixing mounting axle 14 to the mounting section of the handle 16. The handle 13 is fixed on the mounting axle 14 by screwing the set screw 16 out of the axle 14 towards (e.g. onto/into) the handle 13 (Figures 7b-7c). As follows from Figure 7a, the mounting section of the handle 13 includes an inner aperture 13a (e.g. a blind bore), that is aligned with the internally threaded passage 15 of the axle 14 after mounting, for receiving a top part of the screw 16. The handle 13 also includes a passage 13b located opposite the inner aperture 13a, allowing access to a screw head of the screw 16 by a screw driver (no shown). By including the set screw 16 in the mounting axle 14 rather than in the handle 13, the handle 13 can have a slimline look.
Use of the closing assembly can involve a method that includes the following steps: - mounting the socket 1 on a stationary frame 2, for example on a door frame or a window frame; - mounting the housing 5 including the closing mechanism 4 on a movable panel 3, wherein a plurality, for example four, of fixing means, for example screws, are passed through passages 12 for fixing means, for example screw holes, to fix the housing 5, particularly an outer side of the second wall 7, on a movable panel 3; - attaching a cap 19 to the housing, for example through a clicking system; and - mounting the handle 13 on the mounting axle 14 of the closing mechanism 4, and fixing the handle 13 by screwing the set screw 16 from the axle 14 onto/into the handle 13.
It will be clear to the person skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above. Many alternatives are possible within the scope of protection as formulated in the claims hereafter. For example, the forms and designs of various pieces, for example of the handle, the housing, the bolt and/or the socket, can widely vary. Also for example, the way the closing structure collaborates with the socket, is subject to many possibilities.
