Description
A COFFIN, A METHOD OF PREPARING A DECEASED PERSON, AND
A METHOD OF CREMATION
The invention relates to a coffin. The invention also relates to a method of preparing a deceased person and to a method of cremating a deceased person.
When a person is deceased it is customary that the deceased person is laid into a coffin for the purpose of being viewed by family members and friends, and for the purpose of cremation or burial. It is generally desirable that the coffin has been made out of rich looking materials, and that the outside of the coffin has been given a good finish and/or provided with ornaments. However, such coffins may be relatively expensive and from economic and environmental points of view it may be less desirable that such coffins are combusted during the cremation.
It is known, for example from GB 1530774, to employ a coffin with end walls which are formed of doors which are pivotally connected to the respective longitudinal sidewalls, so that the deceased person laid inside the coffin onto a slidable tray can be slid out of the coffin before cremation. This enables the deceased person to be cremated without cremating the coffin, so that the coffin can be re-used. It is known from FR 2582709 A1 to employ a coffin having a detachable bottom which can be separated from the sidewalls, in which case the coffin without the bottom can be saved and re-used. However, relative to the commonly used coffins, both type of coffins need modification of their design. Moreover, the particular modifications may lead to loss of strength and stability of the construction of the coffin, which is undesirable.
The present invention provides a coffin comprising a bottom and fixedly mounted side walls, which coffin is provided with a rigid tray provided with attachment means, which tray can lie onto the bottom inside the coffin supporting a deceased person, and be lifted from the coffin while supporting the deceased person by using the attachment means for load bearing.
The present invention also provides a method of cremating a deceased person resting inside a coffin according to the invention, which method comprises lifting the tray supporting the deceased person from the coffin by using the attachment means for load bearing and moving the deceased person into a cremation oven.
An advantage of this invention is that a coffin as commonly applied can be used without modification of its construction. The provision of a tray which can be laid down in the coffin to support the deceased person is needed. It is a further advantage of the invention that the tray can be used for supporting the deceased person when preparing the deceased person for viewing and laying the deceased person into the coffin.
Therefore, the present invention also provides a method of preparing a deceased person, which method comprises laying a deceased person onto the tray of a coffin in accordance with this invention and inserting the tray supporting the deceased person into the coffin by using the attachment means for load bearing. FIG. 1 provides a top view of the coffin in accordance with this invention. The coffin has been opened. FIG. 2 provides a cross sectional view of the coffin in accordance with this invention along line A-A in FIG. 1.
Throughout the Figures, the same objects will have the same reference numbers.
The coffin according to this invention comprises a bottom and fixedly mounted side walls. The sidewalls comprise longitudinal sidewalls and end walls. Neighbouring side walls may be fixedly mounted to one another and to the bottom of the coffin. A lid may be employed for closing the coffin. For closing the coffin, the lid may be connected to the side walls and secured by means of screws or bolts. It is also conceivable that the lid or a portion of the lid is pivotally connected to one of the side walls, in which case the lid may be closed by pivoting the lid or the portion of the lid towards the side walls and secured by using screws or bolts.
The bottom, side walls and the lid may be made of wood or any other desirable material. Preferably, the bottom may be made of wood. Preferably, one or more of the side walls and/or the lid may be made of wood. More preferably, the bottom, the side walls and the lid may be made of wood. Any type of wood may be employed for making the bottom, the side walls and/or the lid, for example solid wood, plywood, fibre board or chipboard. A veneer may be applied. Typically, the wood for use as a solid wood or veneer may be selected from, for example, pine wood, birch wood, beech wood, mahogany wood, walnut wood, poplar wood, oak wood, or chestnut wood.
The size and the shape of the coffin of this invention are not material to the invention. They may be adapted to the size of the deceased person. Neighbouring side walls may be positioned perpendicular relative to one another, thus forming a rectangular shape. It is an advantage of this invention that the longitudinal side walls are not necessarily positioned in a parallel manner. If not parallel, they may be positioned such that the end walls are not equally sized. The longitudinal side walls may be kinked, so that the coffin is wider in the middle than at one or both ends. The sidewalls may be positioned perpendicular to the bottom. Alternatively, the angle between any of the side walls and the bottom may be more than 90°, for example in the range of from 95° to 110°.
In the normal practice of this invention, the internal length of the coffin may suitably be in the range of from 1.5 to 2.5 m, in particular in the range of from 1.7 to 2.2 m, for example 1.9 or 2 m. The internal width may suitably be in the range of from 0.3 to 0.8 m, in particular in the range of from 0.4 to 0.7 m, for example 0.55 m. The internal height may suitably be in the range of from 0.3 to 0.5 m, in particular in the range of from 0.35 to 0.45 m, for example 0.4 m. As used herein, in case the shape of the coffin is such that the length, the width or the height varies dependent on the location of the measurement, the length, the width or the height as specified herein is the maximum length, the maximum width or the maximum height, respectively.
The tray supporting the deceased person may be inserted into the coffin and prior to the cremation the tray may be lifted from the coffin while supporting the deceased person. The skilled person will understand that the material of the tray and the dimensions of the tray will be selected such that the tray will be sufficiently large and it will have sufficient stiffness, strength and rigidity that it can support the deceased person lifting the tray supporting the deceased person from the coffin, as described herein.
The tray may typically be made of a combustible material, for example wood, cardboard or a plastic. The preferred material may be a relatively inexpensive material. For example, the wood may be selected from pine wood, fibre board or chipboard. The thickness of the tray may be selected in the range of from 10 to 50 mm, in particular in the range of from 15 to 40 mm.
Preferably, the circumference of the tray may follow the circumference of the bottom, and in particular with a sufficient clearance between the circumference of the tray and the sidewalls of the coffin that enables the tray to be inserted into and lifted from the coffin. Preferably, the clearance may typically be in the range of from 0 to 30 mm, more typically in the range of from 1 to 20 mm. As used herein, the clearance is measured while the tray is lying on the bottom inside the coffin, such that the clearance is as evenly distributed along the circumference of the tray as possible.
The side of the tray which may face the deceased person may be flat, while the surface of that side of the tray may be structured so as to prevent the deceased person to slide during the operations mentioned hereinbefore and during transportation of the coffin. Alternatively, the surface may be corrugated. The side of the tray which may face the bottom of the coffin may be flat or corrugated. Corrugation of the tray may increase the strength and stiffness of the tray without increasing the weight of the tray.
Supports may be positioned between the tray and the bottom of the coffin, such that, when tray is positioned in the coffin, there is a space between the bottom and the tray or the main body of the tray. Such space will assist in inserting the tray into the coffin or lifting the tray from the coffin, as will be described hereinafter. Supports attached to the tray are deemed to represent a portion of the tray, in which case the main body of the tray is deemed to be the tray without the supports attached to the tray. The supports may be in the form of, for example, disks, blocks, or slats. The supports may or may not be attached to the bottom and/or to the tray. Preferably, the supports may be positioned at or near the circumference of the tray. The space may typically comprise a distance between the bottom and the tray or the main body of the tray in the range of from 2 to 30 mm, more typically in the range of from 5 to 20 mm.
The tray may be provided with a plurality of attachment means which can assist in inserting the tray into the coffin or lifting the tray from the coffin. The attachment means may comprise a recess in the circumference of the tray or an opening in the tray, or a hook, a ring, a chain or a rope, which hook, ring, chain or rope is attached to the tray. A lifting means, for example a patient lift such as employed in nursing, may be used for inserting the tray into the coffin or lifting the tray from the coffin, which lifting means is provided with, for example, a hook or a ring for engaging with an object to be lifted. Such hook or ring of the lifting means may engage with the attachment means of the tray. When the engagement means comprises a recess or an opening, the hook of the lifting means may engage with the tray by inserting the distal end of the hook into the space between the tray and the bottom which can be created by the use of the supports, as described hereinbefore.
The attachment means may suitably be positioned at or near the circumference of the tray. Such lifting means may suitably be positioned at such locations of the tray that, when lifting the tray supporting the deceased person, the tray remains virtually in a horizontal position and, in particular, the total load transmitted by the attachment means is approximately evenly distributed over the attachment means. The number of attachment means may be in the range of from three to ten, inclusive, in particular in the range of from four to eight, inclusive. As an example, a total of four attachment means may be provided along both longitudinal sides of the tray at or near the shoulders and the knees of the deceased person when lying on the tray. As another example, a total of six attachment means may be provided along both longitudinal sides of the tray at or near both ends of the tray and at the middle of the longitudinal sides, which is approximately at both sides of the hips of the deceased person when lying on the tray.
The inside of the coffin may be provided with a cloth lining for decoration. Suitably the lining may extend along the sidewalls and may be attached to the bottom of the coffin and to the sidewalls near the edges of the side walls where the side walls meet the lid when the coffin is closed. In this case, an additional lining may be provided to cover the tray. Suitable, the lining covers the attachment means, so that the attachment means will not be visible when viewing the deceased person. The lining may be made of any cloth. Typically, the cloth may be selected from linen, cotton, silk or a synthetic material.
Preferably, the lining may cover the sidewalls and additionally may cover the tray, in which case the lining may be attached to the tray and may be attached to the sidewalls near the edges of the sidewalls where the side walls meet the lid when the coffin is closed. It may be advantageous to attach the lining to the side walls in a detachable fashion, for example by using an elastic band, a zip fastener or, preferably, a hook-and-loop fastener. In this embodiment, prior to lifting the tray supporting the deceased person from the coffin, the lining may be detached and draped over the deceased person, so that the deceased person is covered by the lining while the tray supporting the deceased person is lifted from the coffin.
The method of preparing the deceased person comprises laying the deceased person onto the tray and inserting the tray supporting the deceased person into the coffin. The method of preparing the deceased person may further comprise washing the deceased person and getting the deceased person dressed, while lying on the tray, preferably prior to inserting the tray supporting the deceased person into the coffin.
The method of cremation in accordance with this invention comprises lifting the tray supporting the deceased person from the coffin and moving the deceased person into a cremation oven. Preferably, moving the deceased person into the cremation oven comprises moving the tray supporting the deceased person into the cremation oven. Subsequently, the deceased person, in particular the deceased person and the tray, may be cremated in the cremation oven. The cremation may suitably be carried out at a temperature in the range of from 700 to 1100 °C, in particular in the range of from 800 to 1000 °C. The cremation time may suitable be in the range of from 0.5 to 5 hours, more suitably in the range of from 0.8 to 3 hours. The cremation oven may be heated by using electrical power or by burning a fuel, such as natural gas, oil, coal or wood. The cremation ashes may be collected.
Now turning to the Figures, FIG. 1 provides a top view of the open coffin in accordance with this invention. Coffin 10 comprises longitudinal side walls 12, end walls 14, bottom 16, and tray 18. Neighbouring side walls 12 and end walls 14 are fixedly mounted to one another and to bottom 16. Tray 18 lies onto bottom 16 and may support a deceased person (not drawn). Clearance 20 may exist between the circumference of tray 18 and side walls 12, 14. Near its circumference, tray 16 is provided with four attachment means 22, in the forms of rings attached to tray 18 at both sides of the deceased person, when supported by tray 19, near the shoulders and the knees of the deceased person. Lid 24 of coffin 10 is positioned aside coffin 10. FIG. 2 provides a cross sectional view of coffin 10 along line A-A in FIG. 1, while coffin 10 is closed.
