Description
Apparatus and method for packaging articles in flexible bags
The invention relates to an apparatus for packaging articles in flexible bags, comprising a supply roller equipped for receiving a continuous web of flexible material comprising an upper layer and a bottom layer to be sequentially processed into a series of flexible bags filled with said articles, a drive for transportation of the continuous web through the apparatus, one or more sealing organs to seal off bottom and top edges of each flexible bag, filling means for introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the continuous web of flexible material after sealing of a bottom edge of a current flexible bag, and separating means for at least in part separating the current flexible bag from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material.
Such an apparatus is known from US 6,094,895 and is employed to execute the method of packaging articles in flexible bags, comprising the steps of: -supplying a continuous web of flexible material comprising an upper layer and a bottom layer; -transporting the continuous web through the apparatus ; -providing the continuous web of flexible material with a bottom seal for a current flexible bag; -introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the current flexible bag; -providing the current flexible bag with a top seal; -separating the current flexible bag from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material.
The invention aims at improving the known apparatus and method, and to simplify the design and method of operation of the apparatus according to the prior art.
The apparatus and method of the invention are embodied with the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the separating means comprise a perforating knife and at least one roller which during use is in contact with the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material, and which at least one roller cooperates with the perforating knife such that the perforating knife first introduces a perforation into the continuous web of flexible material, and the at least one roller is arranged to subsequently temporarily increase its rotational speed so as to break the perforation in the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material.
This provides a very simple yet effective way of providing that after breaking of the perforation, the upper layer of the then current flexible bag is separated from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material, whereas the transportation of the continuous web through the apparatus can continue while said separation does not affect the bottom layer of the then current flexible bag which remains attached to the remainder of the continuous web. Therefore the apparatus executes the following steps: -providing a perforation into the continuous web of flexible material; and -arranging that a conveying speed of the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material is subsequently temporarily increased so as to break the perforation in the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material.
Preferably after breaking the perforation in the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material the step is then executed of blowing the upper layer of the continuous web of the flexible material apart from the bottom layer so as to enable introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the then current flexible bag of the continuous web. For this purpose the apparatus of the invention is suitably equipped with a section in which the continuous web moves essentially vertically, which section comes after the perforating knife, and which is provided with an air nozzle or nozzles to blow the upper layer of the continuous web of the flexible material apart from the bottom layer so as to enable introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the then current flexible bag of the continuous web.
Suitably after filling the current flexible bag with articles, a top edge of the current flexible bag is clamped and sealed, and the transportation direction of the continuous web is temporarily reversed during clamping so as to separate the current flexible bag completely from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material. For this purpose the apparatus preferably is arranged with separating means that are partly embodied in the drive for transportation of the continuous web through the apparatus, wherein in a section in which the continuous web moves essentially vertically a clamp and a sealing organ for closing a top edge of the current flexible bag are provided that cooperate with said drive for temporarily reversing the transportation direction of the continuous web when the clamp clamps the web of flexible material, which causes the complete separation of the current flexible bag from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows an isometric view of the apparatus according to the invention; -figure 2 shows a side and partially sectional view of the apparatus according to the invention; and -figure 3 shows a schematic view of the apparatus of the invention without constructional details
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Figures 1-3 show the apparatus of the invention for packaging articles in flexible bags. It comprises a supply roller equipped for receiving a continuous web of flexible material 8. This continuous web comprises an upper layer and a bottom layer to be sequentially processed into a series of flexible bags filled with articles. This all is prior art and requires no further elucidation.
The apparatus comprises a drive 4, 5 for transportation of the continuous web through the apparatus, a sealing organ 1 to seal off a bottom edge of each flexible bag, and a sealing organ 7 to seal of a top edge of each flexible bag processed in the machine. Further there are filling means (not shown) for introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the continuous web of flexible material after sealing of a bottom edge of a currently processed flexible bag, and separating means 2, 3, 4, 5 for at least in part separating the current flexible bag from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material.
In the apparatus of the invention the separating means 2, 3, 4, 5 comprise a perforating knife 2 and at least one roller 3 which during use is in contact with the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material, and which at least one roller 3 cooperates with the perforating knife 2 such that the perforating knife first introduces a perforation into the continuous web of flexible material, and the at least one roller 3 is arranged to subsequently temporarily increase its rotational speed so as to break the perforation in the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material.
The figures further show that when looking in the conveying direction of the continuous web of flexible material, the apparatus is equipped with a section in which the continuous web moves essentially vertically. This vertical section comes after the perforating knife 2, and is equipped with an air nozzle 9 or nozzles to blow the upper layer of the continuous web of the flexible material apart from the bottom layer so as to enable introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the then current flexible bag of the continuous web.
Preferably the separating means are further embodied in the drive 4, 5 for transportation of the continuous web through the apparatus, wherein in a section in which the continuous web moves essentially vertically a clamp 6 and a sealing organ 7 for closing a top edge of the current flexible bag are provided that cooperate with said drive 4, 5 for temporarily reversing the transportation direction of the continuous web when the clamp 6 clamps the web of flexible material so as to separate the current flexible bag from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material.
With reference again to figures 1-3, the apparatus of the invention depicted in these figures operates as follows . A continuous web of flexible material 8 is taken from a reel or similar and moves through the apparatus first encountering a first sealing organ 1 for providing a bottom seal of a then current flexible bag that will be made from the continuous web of flexible material 8.
Immediately behind the first sealing organ 1 is a perforation knife 2 which operates simultaneously with the first sealing organ 1, and provides the web of flexible material with a transverse perforation. By the operation of a subsequent roller 3 which during use is in contact with the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material, and which roller 3 cooperates with the perforating knife 2 such that the perforating knife 2 first provides the perforation into the continuous web of flexible material, the roller 3 is arranged to subsequently and temporarily increase its rotational speed so as to break the perforation in the upper layer of the continuous web of flexible material.
Further downstream of the roller 3 is the drive 4, 5 which is used for transportation of the continuous web of flexible material 8 through the apparatus. After said drive 4, 5 follows the step of blowing with nozzle 9 the upper layer of the continuous web of the flexible material apart from the bottom layer so as to enable introducing articles between the upper layer and bottom layer of the then current flexible bag of the continuous web.
After filling is complete a top edge of the current flexible bag is clamped with clamp 6 and sealed at its top with the second sealing organ 7. At that time when the clamp 6 clamps the flexible bag, the transportation direction of the continuous web is temporarily reversed by controlling of the drive 4, 5 so as to separate the current flexible bag completely from the remainder of the continuous web of flexible material. The flexible beg then filled with articles and separated from the remainder of the continuous web is then ready for further handling.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the apparatus of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the gist of the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith.
On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
