Description
MATERIAL
The invention relates to a material, comprising: - a first layer; - a second layer, - a plurality of spacers for spacing apart the first layer and the second layer, thereby defining a space between the first layer and the second layer.
Such a material is known per se and is a so called three-dimensional (3-D) material or fabric. Said spacers give the required mechanical strength and stability to the material. Said material may both be a woven and/or a non-woven. The material comprises yarns, said yams being arranged in all x-, y-, and z-directions, for creating the three-dimensionality thereof. Said first and/or second layer may for example be substantially planar layers. Said first and/or second layer may form one integral part with said spacers. Alternatively, said spacers may be attached to the first and/or second part, for example by gluing or welding.
The material may be used for various applications, for example, but not limited thereto, as a material for protective clothing, as a material for forming a floor (layer), for example for a stable, as a material for filtration purposes, as a material for reinforcing constructions, etc. The invention is also related to each of these various applications.
Said material may be made of any suitable material, for example, but not limited thereto, a polymer, for example, but not limited thereto, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, or a biopolymer, a (bio)composite material, natural fibers, for example, but not limited thereto, hemp, etc.
It is an object of the invention to improve the material of the preamble.
In an embodiment of the material of the invention said space is at least partially filled with a filler material.
An advantage of said filler material at least partially filling the space is that this may increase the mechanical properties, for example the strength, flexibility, stability, compressibility, of said material and/or provide a specific function and/or porosity and/or filterability to said material.
In an embodiment of the material according to the invention said filler material has the shape of granulate or longitudinal rods.
By choosing a suitable granulate material or rod like material with suitable sizes and/or shapes and/or properties, the mechanical properties, for example the strength, flexibility, stability, compressibility, of said material and/or other properties, such as the functionality and/or porosity of said material may easily be chosen. Said space may also be at least partially filled with a combination of granulate and rod like filler material.
Said rods may either be solid or hollow. Said rods are preferably non-porous. Said rods may have any transverse cross-sectional shape, such as, but not limited thereto, round, triangular, square, pentagonal, hexagonal (honeycomb), or any polygonal. Said cross-sectional shape of the rods may for example be chosen in accordance with a shape of said spaces, and may be chosen similar or different thereto. Said rods may also have a sort of U-shape or gutter-shape as seen in a transverse cross-section, wherein said rod is arranged such that in use of said material according to the invention the open end of said rod is the upper end of said rod. Such a rod may function as a sort of channel for discharging liquid or gas in a longitudinal direction of said material.
In another embodiment of the material according to the invention said filler material comprises a material chosen from the group comprising rubber, polymer, metal, wood, activated carbon, inorganics, ceramic material, and sand, or any mixture thereof.
Any suitable material or mixture may be chosen for the filler material, in accordance with the desired properties of the material. A filler material element or particle may be made of one material or a mixture thereof. Also, different filler material elements or particles made of different materials or mixtures may be used. Different filler material elements or particles made of different materials or mixtures may be mixed, or may be arranged in substantially planar filler material layers, which are substantially parallel to the first and/or second layer of the material. Each such optional filler material layer may have a same or different thickness.
In particular for the material according to the invention being applied as a floor (layer) for a stable, and in particular for said filler material being a rod like material, rubber is a suitable material, as rubber is resilient and elastic and provides said floor (layer) with resilient and elastic properties, which is pleasant for animals like cows or the like to walk or stand on.
In particular for the material according to the invention being applied as a filtration element, said filler material particles may comprise, but not limited thereto, sand granulate, activated carbon granulate, ion exchange resin materials, and/or any combination thereof. For example, said filtration element may comprise several substantially planar filtration layers, such that a liquid or gas flowing there through flows through said several filtration layers sequentially. For example, as seen in the direction from the in use upper layer of the material to the in use lower layer of the material, said filtration layers may comprise a first layer of coarse sand, then a second layer of fine sand, and then a third layer of activated carbon. It is noted that any number and/or combination and/or sequence of filtration layers may be applied.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said filler material is functionalized, said functionalization being chosen from the group comprising (specific) adsorption, hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, binding capacity, catalysed chemical reaction and chemical resistance.
By using e.g. titanium oxide, or comparable materials as filler material, one can achieve a so-called self-cleaning surface, as the product is supposed to UV light.
Any desired functionalization or combination of various functionalizations may be chosen for a filler material element or particle or for different filler material elements or particles.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said filler material has the shape of granulate, wherein particles of said granulate material have substantially equal or different sizes.
By using particles with equal sizes, said material will have homogeneous properties, for example homogeneous filterability. By using particles with different sizes, said material will have heterogeneous properties, for example heterogeneous filterability. By choosing suitable equal or various sizes, the properties, for example the filterability, of said material may be suitable chosen.
The size of the particles may for example lie in the range between 0.1 and 10 mm.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said spacers have a closed contour as seen in cross section, thereby each defining a first space.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention second spaces are defined between the spacers and the first and/or second layer.
It is noted, that said second spaces are just called “second spaces” in order to make a distinction between the spaces defined between the spacers and the first and/or second layer from the spaces defined by the closed circumference of the spacers. If no spacers with closed circumferences are present, said second spaces may be the only and/or first spaces.
Said filler material or various filler materials may be comprised in the first and/or second spaces. Optionally, different filler materials may be comprised in the first and second spaces. Also optionally, different filler materials may be comprised in different first spaces and/or second spaces.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said spacers have a substantial cylindrical shape, wherein the first and second layers are connected to opposing sides of the cylindrical jackets of said spacers.
Such cylindrical shaped spacers are inherently strong as a result of their shape and provide dimensional stability and/or strength and/or resiliency. Optionally, said cylindrical shaped spacers may provide channels for transporting liquids contained therein in the longitudinal direction of the spacers.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said spacers have a substantial polygonal cross-section, for example a triangular, square, pentagonal, hexagonal cross-section (honeycomb structure), and wherein the first and second layers are connected to opposing longitudinal sides or edges of the spacers.
In yet another embodiment of the material according to the invention said spacers have a substantial undulating or zigzag shape and wherein the first and second layers are connected to opposing longitudinal sides or edges of the spacers.
The invention will be further elucidated with reference to figures shown in a drawing, in which: figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a 3D-material according to the prior art; figure 2 is a cross section of the material of figure 1, comprising a filler material according to the invention; figure 3 is a cross section of the material of figure 1, comprising a second type of filler material according to the invention; figure 4 is a cross section of a second embodiment of a 3D-material, comprising filler materials according to the invention; and figure 5 shows the material of figure 4 comprising further filler material elements.
In the figures same elements are denoted by same reference numerals, and similar elements by similar reference numerals increased by ten.
Figure 1 shows a three-dimensional material or fabric, comprising a first layer 1, a second layer 2, and a plurality of spacers 3 for spacing apart the first layer 1 and the second layer 2. It is noted that the material may be held in any desired direction, such that the first and second layers may for example be an upper layer and a lower layer, or may for example be side layers. The width or height of the spacers 3 may be chosen as desired for providing any suitable distance between the first and second layer 1, 2 and thereby any suitable thickness of the three-dimensional material or fabric. For example, the thickness of the material may be between 1 mm and 2.5 cm, in particular between 2 mm and 1 cm, more in particular between 3 mm and 50 mm. The length and/or width of the three-dimensional material may be chosen as desired. In particular, the three-dimensional material is relatively thin in comparison to its length and/or width, such that the material is thin but strong. In this example, the spacers 3 have a substantial cylindrical shape, i.e. the spacers 3 are substantially tube like spacers. The first and second layers 1, 2 are connected to opposing sides of the cylindrical jackets of said spacers 3. The closed circumference of the spacers 3 as seen in cross section, defines an inner space 4 of each spacer 3. Further spaces 6 are defined between the outer surface of the spacers 3 and the inner surfaces of the first and second layers 1, 2. The spaces 4 and spaces 6 together define the space of the material between the first and second layers. As a result of the spacers 3, the spaces 4 and spaces 6 are separate compartments. In accordance with the invention, the separate compartments of the material may be filled with different or same filler materials, as will be shown with respect to the figures 2 - 5. In the embodiment of figure 1, at least one layer of the first and second layers 1, 2 may optionally be porous for gas and/or liquid. The spaces 4 and/or spaces 6 may optionally form channels for transporting a gas and/or liquid. As is shown in figure 2, the inner spaces 4 defined by the spacers 3 may be filled by a filler material 5.
In the embodiment of figure 2, the filler material 5 is in the form of a granulate material. The granulate material may comprise any suitable and/or desired material, for example, but not limited thereto, rubber, polymer, metal, wood, activated carbon, inorganics, ceramic material, and sand, or any mixture thereof. In the embodiment of figure 2 all particles of the granulate material have substantially equal sizes and/or shapes, such that the material has homogenous properties. In this example, the spaces 6 defined between the outer surface of the spacers 3 and the inner surfaces of the first and second layers 1, 2 are not filled with filler material. The filler material 5 may increase the mechanical properties, for example the strength, flexibility, stability, compressibility, of said material and/or provide a specific function and/or porosity and/or filterability to said material. For example, if at least one of the layers 1, 2 is porous for gas and/or liquid, said filler material 5 may filter any gas and/or liquid flowing there trough.
In the example of figure 3, the inner spaces 4 defined by the spacers 3 are filled by a second type of filler material 15, which filler material 15 is in the form of rubber, solid rods with a round transverse cross-section. Such an embodiment of the material is in particular suitable for being applied as a floor (layer) of a stable. In this example, the spaces 6 defined between the outer surface of the spacers 3 and the inner surfaces of the first and second layers 1, 2 are filled with said filler material 5 in the form of granulate. This may increase the strength of the material in the areas between the spacers.
The material as shown in figure 4 also comprises a first layer 1, a second layer 2, and a plurality of spacers 13 for spacing apart the first layer 1 and the second layer 2. The spacers 13 have a zigzag shape, wherein edges of the spacers 13 are attached to the first and second layers 1, 2. Spaces 16 are defined between a first surface of the spacers 13 and the inner surfaces of the first and layer 1, and spaces 26 are defined between the other, second surface of the spacers 13 and the inner surfaces of the second layer 2. Both spaces 16, 26 are filled with a filler material in the form of granulate material 5. The granulate material 5 of the spaces 16 have a larger size than the granulate material of the spaces 26. The granulate material 5 of the spaces 16, 26 may be made of the same material or mixture, or of different materials or mixtures.
The filler material 5, 15 may optionally be functionalized. For example, said functionalization may be chosen from the group comprising, but not limited thereto, (specific) adsorption, hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, binding capacity and chemical resistance.
The material as shown in figure 5 is the same material as shown in figure 4, but further comprises a further type of filler material 15, which filler material 15 is in the form of rubber, solid rods, as described also with respect to figure 3. The filler material rods 15 are arranged in spaces 26. The rods have a round cross-section, which is a different shape than the triangular spaces 26.
Alternatively, any cross-sectional shape of rods may be chosen. For example said rods may have a triangular cross-section, such that the cross-sections of the rods 15 and spaces 26 are similar.
It is noted that the invention is not limited to the shown embodiments but also extends to variants within the scope of the appended claims.
For example, it is clear for the skilled person that said spacers may have any desired shape and/or cross section.
Further for example, it is clear for the skilled person that any of the defined spaces or compartments may optionally be filled with any desired filler material of any desired shape and/or size and/or made of any desired material and/or with any desired properties or function.
