Description
Title: A device for checking a bundle of banknotes, system for reducing a bundle of banknotes checked by said device, as well as a method for checking and/or reducing a bundle of banknotes.
Description
The invention relates to a device for checking a bundle of banknotes to be reduced. The invention further relates to a system for reducing banknotes to be reduced. The invention also relates to a method for checking banknotes to be reduced, as well as to a method for reducing banknotes.
Devices and methods for reducing bundles of banknotes are known, for example from EP 0 622 120 B1 and WO 2012 177124. The known reducing device comprises a cabinet-like frame. Disposed in the interior of said frame is a reducing unit. A conveyor is disposed on the cabinet-like frame. The conveyor is surrounded all around by a closable casing. The casing comprises a supply opening, which can be closed by a cover. Via said supply opening, paper to be reduced, and in particular valuable papers such as banknotes, can be placed on the conveyor. The paper is often placed on the conveyor in relatively large bundles. The conveyor then conveys the paper to be reduced to a discharge end of the conveyor, which is positioned above an opening in the cabinet-like frame, directly above the reducing unit. The paper subsequently falls into the reducing unit, where it is cut into small pieces and/or shredded.
In practice, a batch containing a specific number of bundles of banknotes is reduced with such a device. Said batch is loaded into the known device by several users, under supervision. It is important that the complete batch is indeed destroyed by said device, i.e. that all banknotes intended to be destroyed are indeed destroyed.
It is an object of the invention to improve the secureness of the loading of said device for reducing banknotes, to better ensure that all bundles of banknotes, and all banknotes of each bundle to be reduced, are indeed destroyed.
In order to achieve that object, the invention provides a device for checking a bundle of banknotes to be reduced, said device comprising: - An inlet conveyor for supplying to said device a bundle of banknotes to be checked; - A checking means arranged for checking said bundle of banknotes supplied to said device, wherein the checking means comprises a weight measurement unit connected to said inlet conveyor and that is arranged for measuring the weight of said bundle of banknotes, wherein the checking means are arranged for either approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes based on the weight measured by said weight measurement unit; - An outlet conveyor provided downstream of said weight measurement unit, and connectable to a reducing device for reducing said bundle of banknotes, wherein the checking means are arranged for sending said bundle of banknotes to the outlet conveyor in case said bundle of banknotes is approved; and - A storage means provided downstream of said weight measurement unit, wherein the checking means are arranged for sending said bundle of banknotes to the storage means in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved.
With the device according to the invention, it is possible to check at least the weight of a bundle of banknotes to be destroyed. In case the weight is approved, i.e. the weight of the bundle of banknotes conforms to an expected value, or is within an expected range, then the checking means ensure that the bundle of banknotes is sent to the outlet conveyor, for loading into the reducing device. In case the weight is not approved, i.e. the weight of the bundle of banknotes differs from the expected value, or lies outside the expected range, then the bundle of banknotes is sent to a storage means, where it may be made accessible to a user for further inspection.
The device according to the invention thus enables a further check of each individual bundle of banknotes to be reduced, by which it can be checked whether indeed said bundle of banknotes is to be destroyed, or whether something unexpected has happened to said bundle of banknotes, which needs to be investigated. Thus, the device according to the invention increases the secureness of the loading of said device for reducing banknotes, since it prevents that bundles of banknotes may be manipulated by users during loading of the reducing the device.
The device according to the present invention is arranged to process multiple bundles of banknotes, preferably one after another. The device may be arranged to process a relatively large amount of bundles of banknotes in a relatively short amount of time, as will be explained further on. The device is in an embodiment arranged to count the number of bundles processed by the checking means. With the number of bundles processed, a user, for instance a supervisor, can check whether the number of bundles processed by the device according to the invention equals the number of bundles to be reduced, thus further increasing the secureness of the device according to the invention.
It is conceivable that the checking means is arranged for approving said bundle of banknotes in case the weight measured by said weight measurement unit lies within a predetermined range, and is arranged for disapproving said bundle of banknotes in case the weight measured by said weight measurement unit lies outside said predetermined range. The predetermined range can be stored in the device, for instance in a memory unit accessible by the checking means. In practice, the predetermined range may depend on the denomination of the bundle of banknotes to be destroyed. It is therefore conceivable that a number of predetermined ranges associated with different bundles of banknotes, are stored in the device.
The pre-determined range for a single denomination may be a variable pre-determined range. The variable pre-determined range may be based on the weight measurements performed on a recent number of measurements, for example 100 or even 1000 measurements, for bundle of banknotes. For instance, the variable pre-determined range may be based on a running average of the weight measurements for that denomination. If it is concluded that the average weight of the bundle of banknotes changes, or that the range in weights narrows or widens, the pre-determined range may be adjusted to a new pre-determined range to which the weight of bundle of banknotes is to be compared.
In an embodiment, the checking means comprises an actuation unit provided downstream of the weight measurement unit for sending the bundle to at least one of the outlet conveyor or the storage means, in particular wherein the actuation unit is arranged for activating on the bundle of banknotes in case the bundle is disapproved by the checking means. This means that disapproval of a bundle of banknotes, and sending to the storage means, is an active process, and that in case no disapproval is given for a specific bundle of banknotes, the actuation unit is not activated, and the approved bundle of banknotes traverses automatically to the outlet conveyor.
The checking means of the device may comprise a marking unit arranged for marking said bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is approved or is disapproved. The mark applied to said bundle of banknotes may be used to further check the bundle of banknotes downstream. For instance, it is possible to mark the bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved, such that it can be seen that the bundle of banknotes is indeed disapproved. The mark applied may also be used to check whether the outlet conveyor truly contains approved bundles of banknotes, for instance by means of detection means provided near the outlet conveyor, and which are arranged for detecting the mark applied to said bundle of banknotes by means of said marking unit. The mark may furthermore contain specific information about the approval or the disapproval. For instance, the mark may contain the reason of disapproval, i.e. the mark may comprise the weight measured and the expected value, such that it becomes possible for a user, i.e. a supervisor, to swiftly see why the bundle of banknotes was disapproved. In an embodiment, the mark contains a identification number, in particular a unique identification number. Each identification number may further be stored in a database, wherein each number is associated with a reason for approval/disapproval. Using the database, a user is able to quickly determine the reason for approval/disapproval for a product having the particular mark.
The marking unit may in an embodiment be arranged for applying an adhesive label to said bundle of banknotes. Such a marking may easily and swiftly be applied, and allows information to be printed on said label, before application to said bundle. The marking unit may comprise, to this end, a printing means. A further check to the bundle of banknotes may be provided, when the checking means further comprises an imaging unit arranged for capturing an image of said bundle of banknotes. The imaging unit may be arranged for detecting any mark made on the bundle of banknotes.
The image may in an embodiment be used in the approval/disapproval of the bundle of banknotes. The image may be used, for example, to determine the denomination, the dimensions, and/or the strap count of the bundle of banknotes to be checked. Other information or properties of the bundle of banknotes, and which is suitable to base an approval/disapproval on, may be used as well.
In a specific embodiment, the imaging unit comprises a 3D imaging unit, such as a 3D camera. The 3D camera uses, in an embodiment, a laser line that is projected onto the object. The camera itself sees the laser line from another angle (view angle). With this, the position of the laser line is detected on each sensor column, providing information on the cross-section, or surface of the object viewed. By moving the object past the laser line, a series of cross-sections or surface sections is obtained, and with this it is possible to obtain information of the bundle of banknotes, more in particular information on the strap count in the bundle of banknotes.
To ensure a fast loading of the reducing device, it is essential that processing of the bundles of banknotes is performed in relatively little time. To this end, the weighing of the bundle of banknotes has to be quick and accurate. To this end, the weight measurement unit of the device according to the invention comprises a conveyor scale, in an embodiment, which are known per se to those skilled in the art.
To prevent that users gain access to said bundle of banknotes during processing, the device according to the invention comprises a casing unit, wherein the storage means and the weight measurement unit are enclosed by said casing unit in such a way that access by a user to said bundle of banknotes is prevented and/or restricted. Once the bundle of banknotes is conveyed from the input conveyor to the weight measurement unit, the user can not contact the bundle of banknotes anymore. After approval, the bundle of banknotes is sent to the outlet, where preferably access to said bundle of banknotes is restricted as well, but which in an embodiment may allow access for a user. After disapproval, the bundle of banknotes is sent to a storage means, which is arranged such that access to said bundle of banknotes present in said storage means is restricted. A closable hatch or door may be provided in the casing unit, which is arranged to allow restricted access to said storage means, for instance only to a supervisor, for instance by means of a combination of a lock and a key.
The checking device according to the invention may comprise an audit function, to test the performance and accuracy of the checking device. In the audit function, audit bundles of banknotes may be used. The audit function may comprise that the device is arranged for randomly sending an approved bundle of banknotes to the storage means, for further inspection. It is furthermore conceivable that in the audit function, all the bundles are sent to the storage means.
It is noted that the check may be performed at a distance from the location of the actual reducing of the banknotes.
According to an aspect of the invention, however, a system for reducing banknotes is provided, comprising a checking device as described above, as well as a reducing device connected to said outlet conveyor for reducing said bundle of banknotes to be reduced, such that immediate reducing of the bundle of banknotes, after checking, is possible.
In a further embodiment, a first check is performed at a distance, using a checking device according to the invention, as a stand alone device. Data registered by said first checking device and concerning the bundle of banknotes that have been checked, is then subsequently fed to the checking device of the system for reducing banknotes, which checks the bundle of banknotes, once again, before the actual reducing takes place.
According to an aspect of the invention, a method for checking a bundle of banknotes is provided, in particular using a device according to the invention, wherein said method comprises the steps of: - Supplying a bundle of banknotes to be checked; - Measuring the weight of said bundle of banknotes; - Approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes based on the weight measured by said weight measurement unit; - Releasing said bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is approved; - Storing said bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved.
The method may be executed by means of the device. Supplying a bundle of banknotes to be checked according to the method of the invention may comprise supplying said bundle of banknotes to the inlet conveyor of the device. Measuring the weight of said bundle of banknotes may comprise the step of measuring the weight by means of the weight measuring unit. Approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes based on the weight may be performed automatically, by means of the checking means of the device according to the invention. Releasing said bundle of banknotes may comprise the step of sending said bundle of banknotes to a reducing device, and/or it may comprise the step of sending said bundle of banknotes to the outlet conveyor. Storing said bundle of banknotes according to the method may comprise the step of storing said bundle of banknotes in the storage means of the device according to the invention.
In an embodiment of the invention, the step of approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes comprises the step of approving said bundle of banknotes in case said weight measured lies within a predetermined weight range, and comprises the step of disapproving said bundle of banknotes in case the weight measured lies outside said predetermined range.
The method may further comprise the step of marking said bundle of banknotes, for example by means of applying a label, in particular in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved.
In a further embodiment of the method, it comprises the step of obtaining an image of said bundle of banknotes. The image may be stored for later reference. The image may be used for determining the denomination of the bundle of banknotes, the size of the bundle of banknotes, and/or the strap count, and/or any other information relating to the bundle of banknotes and which is of interest in checking said bundle of banknotes.
It is advantageous when the step of measuring the weight of said bundle of banknotes is performed by means of a conveyor scale, since it allows a fast processing of the bundle of banknotes, up to a few bundles per second.
The method according to the invention preferably comprises the further step of reducing said bundle of banknotes released, in case said bundle of banknotes is approved.
The step of obtaining an image may be used in approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes. In an embodiment, this may be done even without weighing the bundle of banknotes. According to an aspect, a method for checking a bundle of banknotes is provided, wherein said method comprises the steps of: - Supplying a bundle of banknotes to be checked; - Obtaining an image of said bundle of banknotes; - Approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes based on the image obtained; - Releasing said bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is approved; - Storing said bundle of banknotes in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved.
According to an aspect, a device for checking a bundle of banknotes to be reduced is provided, said device comprising: - An inlet conveyor for supplying to said device a bundle of banknotes to be checked; - A checking means arranged for checking said bundle of banknotes supplied to said device, wherein the checking means comprises an imaging unit that is arranged for capturing an image of said bundle of banknotes, wherein the checking means are arranged for either approving or disapproving said bundle of banknotes based on the image obtained by the imaging unit; - An outlet conveyor connectable to a reducing device for reducing said bundle of banknotes to be reduced, wherein the checking means are arranged for sending said bundle of banknotes to the outlet conveyor in case said bundle of banknotes is approved; and - A storage means, wherein the checking means are arranged for sending said bundle of banknotes to the storage means in case said bundle of banknotes is disapproved.
In the context of the present invention, a module, means, device, equipment or the like may also be implemented as a computer program running on a processor.
Following the above, the device for checking a bundle of banknotes to be reduced comprises an inlet conveyor, a checking means, i.e. a checking module, a weight measurement unit, an outlet conveyor, and storage means, i.e. a storage device. In further embodiments, the device comprises a marking module, an actuation unit, and/or imaging means.
The invention will further be explained by means of an embodiment shown in the accompanying description of the figures, in which:
Fig. 1 - is a top view of a system according to the invention, comprising a checking device according to the invention, and a reducing device;
Fig. 2 - is a side view of the system as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 - is a flowchart illustrating a schematic view of the steps performed in a method according to the present invention.
Figure 1 discloses a system 101 for reducing banknotes, which system comprises a device 1 for checking a bundle 41 of banknotes to be reduced. A plurality of bundles 31 of banknotes to be reduced are placed on a top side of a table 3. The plurality of bundles 31 may all comprise the same type of bundles, i.e. bundles comprising the same number and the same type of banknotes, or may comprise different types of bundles, for example a different number and/or different types of banknotes. The device 1 according to the present invention will obtain its object for both alternatives, as will be explained further below.
At least one operator 17a, and in the present example, two operators 17a, 17b are working at opposite sides of the table 3. The operators 17a, 17b are picking up the bundles 31 and placing them, one by one, on an inlet conveyer 21 of the system 101. The inlet conveyor 21 is arranged for supplying the bundles placed on the inlet conveyor 21 to the device 1. The bundles 31 of banknotes are placed on the inlet conveyer 21 such that these bundles 31 are all in line, i.e. sequentially approaching the device 1, as indicated with reference numeral 41.
The conveyor 21 may be a belt conveyor, a gravity roller conveyor, a chain conveyor, or the like. In the present example, the conveyor 21 is a belt conveyor, comprising at least two pulleys and, rotating around these pulleys, a continuous loop of material thereby creating a conveying belt. At least one of the pulleys is driven, i.e. powered, such that the belt and the bundles 31 of banknotes are moving along the conveyor 21 towards the device 1.
Whenever a bundle 42 of banknotes enters the device, via the inlet conveyor 21, it will encounter checking means 7 present in the device 1, which checking means 7 are arranged for checking the bundle 42 of banknotes supplied to the device 1. Hereto, the checking means 7 comprises a weight measurement unit 11 connected to the inlet conveyor 21, and is arranged for measuring the weight of the bundle 42 of banknotes. The checking means 7 are arranged for either approving or disapproving the bundle 42 of banknotes based on the weight measured by the weight measurement unit 11.
The weight measurement unit 11 may, for example, be a conveyer belt scale, connected between the inlet conveyor 21 and an outlet conveyor 23, which outlet conveyor 23 is comprised in the device 1. As each of the bundles in the plurality of bundles 31 are placed, one after the other, on the inlet conveyor 21, these bundles are approaching the weight measurement unit 11 one by one. As such, it is made possible for the weight measurement unit 11 to measure the weight of a single bundle 42 of banknotes.
In another embodiment according to the present invention, the weight measurement unit 11 may also be arranged to measure a plurality of bundles 42 of banknotes at the same time, for example five, ten or fifteen bundles 42. For determining whether one of these bundles deviate from an expected weight value, the weight measurement unit 11 may be arranged to measure the weight of the pack, i.e. the plurality of bundles, each time a bundle 42 of banknotes leaves and/or enters the weight measurement unit 11. As such, the weight measurement unit 11 is arranged to determine the weight of each of the bundles 42 of banknotes traversing the weight measurement unit 11.
The checking means 7 is then arranged to either approve or disapprove a bundle 42 based on the measured and/or determined weight of that bundle 42. An approval, in the context of the present application, may mean that the weight of the bundle 42 lies within a predetermined range, i.e. a range in the expected weight for the bundle 42. In practical situations, the weight of a bundle 42 may be, for example, 900 grams. The predetermined, or predefined, range for approving a bundle 42 may then be determined as 899 grams to 901 grams. The range should, preferably, be less than the weight of two banknotes, and more preferably be less than the weight of a single banknote in order to, for example, accurately verify that the bundle 42 does not miss any banknote.
In practice, however, the range of expected weight for a given bundle of banknotes having a certain denomination, is relatively large. In effect, the weight of these bundle of banknotes is expected to have a normal distribution, in which the standard deviation exceeds the weight of a single banknote, which makes it hard or even impossible to check whether a single banknote is missing. Therefore, it is preferably checked whether the bundle has the required number of straps of banknotes. Additionally, the system is arranged for checking whether the required number of bundles has been processed by the system.
As mentioned before, the bundles 31 of banknotes may comprise a variety of different types of bundles, each type having a different expected weight value. As such, the checking means 7 may be arranged to approve a bundle 42 of banknotes in case its measured or determined weight lies within any of multiple predetermined weight ranges, wherein each weight range is matched to, i.e. tailored to, one of the types of bundles of banknotes.
These predetermined weight range values may be stored in a memory inside the device 1. Predetermined, in the context of the present invention, means that the values should be made available for the checking means 7 prior to the processing of the plurality of bundles 31 of banknotes to be reduced. As such, a supervisor may alter, i.e. amend, any of the predetermined weight ranges before a batch of bundles 31 of banknotes is processed, such that the range or ranges correspond to the actual batch of bundles 31 to be processed. In a specific embodiment, the supervisor electronically enters the denomination of the bundles of banknotes to be reduced, to make them available to the checking means 7 prior to processing. Based on the denomination entered, the checking means uses prestored ranges relating to said denomination entered.
The checking means 7 comprises a marking unit 12 arranged for marking the bundle 42 of banknotes in case the bundle of banknotes is approved or is disapproved by the checking means 7. The marking may include any type of information, i.e. a time stamp, date stamp, reason for disapproving or approving etc. For example, a disapproved bundle of banknotes may be marked with a marking, wherein the marking may comprise a unique identification code with which it is possible to check why the bundle of banknotes was disapproved. The unique identification code including the reason of disapproval may be stored in the checking means 7, or in a separate database, such that a user may enter the identification code of the disapproved bundle of banknotes, for instance in an electronic device connected to the checking means, for obtaining the reason why the bundle of banknotes was disapproved. In an embodiment, the marking visually indicates what the weight of that bundle of banknotes is, and/or what the expected weight of that banknote is and/or what the acceptable predetermined range for the weight of that bundle was/is. As such, a supervisor is able to quickly see why and when the bundle of banknotes was disapproved.
Approving a bundle of banknotes to be reduced, in accordance with the present invention, means that the checking means 7 validate that the weight of the bundle 42 of banknotes corresponds to its expected weight.
The checking means 7 further comprises an actuation unit 12, 13 provided downstream of the weight measurement unit 11 for sending the bundle to at least one of the outlet conveyor 23 or storage means 22. In particular, the actuation unit 13 is arranged to actuate on the bundle of banknotes in case the bundle is disapproved by the checking means 7.
As such, the actuation unit 13 acts on bundles of banknotes which are disapproved by the checking means 7, and which are present on top of the outlet conveyor 23. The actuation unit 13 may, for example, provide a mechanical force towards a disapproved bundle of banknotes, such that that bundle is removed from the outlet conveyor 23 towards the storage means 22.
Disapproved bundles 43 present on the storage means 22 may be checked by a supervisor 17c to determine why and when these bundles 43 were disapproved of, i.e. by reading marks present on the disapproved bundles 43, or by checking data stored in the checking means and relating to the marks present on the disapproved bundles. The supervisor 17c is then able to act based on the information in/of these marks.
The storage means 22 and the weight measurement unit 11 (and preferably also an inlet 51 of a reducing device 5 comprised by the system, as will be discussed below) are enclosed by a casing unit 2 in such a way that access by a user to the bundle of banknotes in the device 1 is prevented or made impossible. The casing unit 2 may comprise, for example, a fencing unit covering the checking means 7, the weight measuring unit 11 and the outlet conveyor 23.
In order for a supervisor 17c to be able to determine why and when the bundles of banknotes on the storage means 22 were disapproved of, the casing unit 2 may be made (partly) transparent, i.e. using a fencing unit or using glass, or the casing unit 2 may comprise a lockable opening for the supervisor to enter the casing unit 2 using a key.
The system 101 additionally comprises a further outlet conveyor 24, connected to the outlet conveyor 23, for conveying, i.e. transporting, approved bundles 44 of banknotes to the reducing device 5. In the present example, the further outlet conveyor 24 is connected transversely to the outlet conveyor 23. As such, the direction of conveying of the approved bundles 44 of banknotes changes approximately 90° from the outlet conveyor 23 to the further outlet conveyor 24. This provides a good set-up for loading the reducing device. Other set-ups, using different angles, are conceivable as well.
The further outlet conveyor 24 is arranged to convey the approved bundle 44 of banknotes to a reducing inlet conveyor 26 arranged for the approved bundle 44 of banknotes to the reducing device 5. The approved bundle 44 of banknotes are released from the reducing inlet conveyor 26 to the inlet 51 of the reducing device 5 such that the reducing device 5 is able to, for example, shred, destroy, cut, evaporate the approved bundle 44 of banknotes.
Figure 2 discloses a side view of the system 101 as shown in figure 1. The system 101 comprises a table 3 on which a plurality of bundles 31 of banknotes are places, which plurality of bundles 31 of banknotes are to be reduced by a reducing device 5. In the context of the present invention, reducing may comprise any of shredding, cutting, evaporating, destroying, burning of the bundles of banknotes.
All of the bundles of the plurality of bundles 31 of banknotes are placed, by an operator 17a, 17b, on an inlet conveyor 21 for providing the bundles to the device according to the present invention. The plurality of bundles 31 are placed in sequential order on the inlet conveyor 21, such that the bundles of banknotes reach the device 1 one by one, i.e. sequentially. A bundle 42 of banknotes is then first weighed by a weight measurement unit 11 comprised in the checking means 7. As explained in the text accompanying figure 1, a discrepancy in the weight measured or determined by the weight measurement unit 11 and the expected weight of the bundle 42 of banknotes is an indication for disapproving the bundle 42. A disapproved bundle is conveyed to the storage means 22, i.e. storage device 22, and an approved bundle 44 is conveyed to the device 1.
Checking means 7, i.e. checking module 7, further comprises an imaging unit 16, 17 arranged for capturing an image of the bundle 42 of banknotes. Captured images may further form a basis for determining whether a bundle 42 of banknotes should be approved or disapproved. The imaging unit 16, 17 may, for example, be arranged to determine the type of bundle 42 of banknotes, the number of straps in the bundle 42, etc.
In an embodiment, an operator enters the denomination of the bundles to be checked into the device. Based on such information, the checking means 7 is able to determine what the expected weight of the bundle 42 of banknotes is intended to be. The checking means 7 then determines which predetermined weight range is applicable for the bundle 42 of banknotes based on the information entered into the device.
The device 1 or the checking means 7 may further comprise a memory for storing images captured by the imaging unit 16, 17. These images may be used to visually inspect each of the bundles of banknotes conveyed to the device 1. As such, even after the reducing process has completed, a supervisor 17c is able to verify that the bundles 31 of banknotes all have been reduced properly, i.e. correctly.
Image processing means may be used for processing the images captured by the imaging unit 16, 17, and for determining a specific property of the bundle of banknotes, such as denomination, strap count, etcetera.
The imaging unit 16, 17 may further be coupled to the marking unit 12, which marking unit 12 is arranged for applying a marking to the bundle 42 of banknotes. The marking may be a barcode, QR-code, or any other type of marking comprising data which is made visible. The marking may further comprise an adhesive label such that the label is secured to the bundle 42 of banknotes.
Data retrieved from the images captured by the imaging unit 16, 17 may be included in the marking of the bundle 42 of banknotes, such that a supervisor 17c is able to quickly determine why a bundle 43 of banknotes is disapproved of.
