Description
Saw for sawing through an object, notably an offshore object or onshore object
The invention relates to a saw for sawing through an object, notably an offshore object or onshore object, such as a shipwreck or similar, comprising a cable or chain provided with elements with an abrasive and/or cutting surface. The invention also relates to a method of assembling such a saw.
Such a saw for sawing through an object is known from W003/009960. This known saw comprises a wire, such as a wire cable, having a end connection at each end; a plurality of bushes threaded on the wire; and stop means provided at each end of the wire for holding the bushes on the wire. The circumferential surfaces of the bushes are provided with cutting means. The passage of each bush has a cross section larger than the cross section of the wire such that each bush is slidable on said wire. The stop means engage, at least are engageable, on the one hand with the respective end connection and on the other hand with the respective terminal bush.
There are notable disadvantages to this known saw.
During its use play may occur between the bushes of the saw which may cause that the saw gets stuck in the material being sawn, and that the wire of the saw gets damaged. One of the other problems is that when it requires repair, a complete dismantling and reassembling is required to replace the parts that have worn out by parts that make the reassembled saw fit for reuse. Further, if the wire breaks the bushes that are provided on the wire may get lost. Still another disadvantage is that the wire suffers from relatively high wear and tear due to the movement of the bushes along the wire.
It is an object of the invention to improve or provide an alternative to this known saw, which is more resistant to damage of its wire, is less likely to get stuck in the material being sawn, and is easier to assemble and/or which is easier to repair and/or which is less sensitive to wear and tear.
The saw of the invention is provided with one or more of the features of the appended claims.
In a first' aspect of the invention the cable or chain that is provided with elements with an abrasive and/or cutting surface, has the feature that the elements are interconnected with screw connections. With this in retrospect relatively simple measure it is shown possible to improve the resistance of the saw of the invention against wear and tear, to prevent that the saw gets stuck during operation in the material being sawn, and that the assembly, but particularly the repair of the saw of the invention is tremendously simplified in comparison with the prior art.
Another aspect of the invention is that the elements are of at least two types, a first type constituted as a main pin, and a second type constituted as a bush, wherein a series of main pins and bushes are alternated and connected to each other to form the cable or chain. This feature promotes the strength of the saw of the invention and also its ease of manufacturing and/or repairing since the elements can easily be threaded together, without the need to take the now obviated central continuous wire of the prior art into account. The construction further promotes the resistance of the saw the invention against wear and tear, and enables the ease of replacing intermediate elements should nevertheless the need arise to carry out a repair of the saw.
It is advantageous that each main pin has two opposed extremities, wherein each extremity is provided with screw thread for making the screw connections with the adjacent bushes on the opposing sides of the main pin. A further preferable feature is that on each extremity of a main pin a spherical ring is mounted or mountable that engages an inner surface of the bush that connects to said extremity of the main pin. This secures the connection between the main pin and the bush, particularly in the embodiment wherein on each extremity of the main pin a nut is mountable to prevent dislodging of the spherical ring from the extremity of the main pin.
Another preferential feature is that each bush has two spherical surfaces, each such spherical surface being provided on a side facing an adjacent bush. In this construe- tion the adjacent bushes with the connecting main pin in between may form a so-called pivot bearing which allows rotation of the elements of the saw in several directions, yet limiting the extent of possible angular rotation.
For the ease of manufacturing and repair of the saw the invention it is further beneficial that each bush is assembled from two separable bush parts that in the assembled bush connect to each other with a connection socket.
In a preferred embodiment the connection socket is provided with screw thread at its outer circumference that cooperates with screw threads at the inner surfaces of the separable bush parts.
It is advantageous that one of the elements is a spacer provided around a main pin and between two adjacent bushes. This spacer provides for a reduction in diameter transition between neighbouring bushes and minimizes the impact loads that may occur on the bushes during a saw-ing/cutting operation. In addition, the spacer reduces the risk of scrap getting stuck or clamped between the neighbouring bushes during a sawing operation. Optionally the spacer can be provided with an elastic material to seal off the gap between the neighbouring bushes. It is then also possible to enclose a lubricant in the closed of connection between the neighbouring bushes and the connecting main pin.
The invention also relates to a method for assembling a saw for sawing through an object, comprising a cable or chain provided with elements with an abrasive and/or cutting surface, which has the steps of -providing elements of at -least two types, a first type constituted as a main pin, and a second type constituted as a bush, wherein a series of main pins and bushes are alternated and connected to each other using screw connections to form the cable or chain; -providing that each bush is assembled from two separable bush parts that are to be connected to each other with a connection socket to provide an assembled bush; -providing the connection socket with screw thread at its outer circumference and providing screw threads at the inner surfaces of the separable bush parts to cooperate with the screw thread of the connection socket to form the assembled bush; -providing each bush with two spherical surfaces, each such spherical surface being provided on a side facing an adjacent bush; -providing each main pin with two opposed extremities, each extremity being provided with screw thread for making the screw connections with the adjacent bush parts on the opposing sides of the main pin; -providing on each extremity of a main pin a spherical ring to engage an inner surface of the bush part that is to be connected to said extremity οΐ the main pin; and -providing on each extremity of such main pin a nut to prevent dislodging of the spherical ring from the extremity of the main pin.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing showing a schematic representation of the saw of the invention.
In the drawing: -figure 1 schematically shows a three-dimensional view at a part of a saw according to the invention; -figure 2 shows two neighbouring bushes and an intermediate main pin connecting said bushes, as forming part of a saw according to the invention.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
Referring first to figure 1 a saw for sawing through an object is shown basically constituted as a a cable or chain of elements which may be provided with an abrasive and/or cutting surface. Although not shown the cable or chain preferably forms a closed loop so that the saw may be operated as described in the nonpublished Dutch patent application NL-2009954.
Referring now to figure 2 the elements are shown that make up. the cable or chain forming the saw the invention. At least some elements, notably the elements identified as the bushes 1, are provided with an abrasive and/or cutting surface.
The elements are of at least two types, a first type constituted as a main pin 4, and a second type constituted as a bush 1, wherein a series of main pins 4 and bushes 1 are alternated and interconnected with screw connections to form the cable or chain.
Each main pin 4 has two opposed extremities 4.1 and 4.2, wherein each extremity 4.1; 4.2 is provided with screw thread 8 for making the screw connections with the adjacent bushes 1.1; 1.2 on the opposing sides of the main pin 4.
