Description
Optically readable two-dimensional code
The invention relates to an optically readable two-dimensional code comprising with respect to each other rela-5 tively light and dark cells representing binary coded data; which cells are placed in a two-dimensional matrix as a pattern so as to be readable by an optical scanning operation along a predetermined scanning line; which matrix is provided with apexes at its corners and with positioning symbols dis-10 posed at predetermined apexes of said matrix, which position ing symbols are arranged with a pattern to provide in said scanning operation a predetermined frequency component ratio when said scanning line passes through a positioning symbol's center irrespective of the scanning line's direction, wherein 15 the binary coded data is disposed in a two-dimensional region within the matrix.
Such a two-dimensional code is known from EP-A-0 672 994 .
The invention has as at least one of its objects to 20 provide an alternative for the known two-dimensional code.
As a further object the invention aims at providing a more appealing code so as to further its application throughout industry, particularly but not exclusively in business to consumer relations.
25 Still a further object of the invention is to provide a code which is prone to be individualized to a particular user and/or product.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a code which is capable to have a dual use, next to its use 30 as a binary code.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a code which allows for direct communication with humans.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a code which is capable to support marketing and advertise-35 ment campaigns.
These and other objects of the invention are provided with the two-dimensional code of the invention, having the 2 features of one or more of the appended claims.
An essential aspect of the invention is that the optically readable two-dimensional code which comprises with respect to each other relatively light and dark cells that rep-5 resent binary coded data, is having the characterizing fea ture that the relatively dark cells comprise preselected images .
There are no specific requirements that the preselected images have to meet; the images can be taken from any 10 possible source and be selected solely with a view of a par ticular secondary use that the images may provide. The images may be personal to the user or to the product to which the two-dimensional code is applied. It is further possible and even one of the benefits of the invention that the prese-15 lected images are mutually differing images. The images may be in colour or black-and-white images. The only requirement that has to be met is that one or more of the preselected images are arranged to provide a preselected level of darkness in comparison with the light cells of the code so as to ar-20 range that the scanning operation results into the binary coded data.
A particularly appreciable use of the two-dimensional code of the invention is provided in the embodiment that the preselected images are photographic images.
25 Although it is believed that the foregoing description is completely clear for the skilled person so as to enable this person to provide a two-dimensional code consistent with the invention, the following figures provide respective examples of the two-dimensional code of the prior art and the 30 two-dimensional code of the invention, that express and ex plain the meaning of the wording of the appended claims.
Figure 1 shows an example of a two-dimensional code in accordance with the prior art; and figure 2 shows an example of a two-dimensional code in 35 accordance with the invention corresponding with the code shown in figure 1.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
3
With reference to both figure 1 and figure 2 an optically readable two-dimensional code 1 is shown, comprising with respect to each other relatively light 2 and dark 3 cells representing binary coded data. The cells 2, 3 are 5 placed in a two-dimensional matrix as a pattern so as to be readable by an optical scanning operation along a predetermined scanning line A. The matrix is provided with apexes 4, 5, 6, 7 at its corners and with positioning symbols 8, 9, 10 disposed at predetermined apexes of said matrix, which posi-10 tioning symbols 8, 9, 10 are arranged with a pattern to pro vide in said scanning operation a predetermined frequency component ratio when said scanning line passes through a positioning symbol's center irrespective of the scanning line's direction. The binary coded data is disposed in a two-15 dimensional region 11 within the matrix.
In figure 1 showing the two-dimensional code of the prior art, the relatively light 2 and dark 3 cells are shown to be white respectively black. In figure 2 showing the two-dimensional code of the invention, the relatively light 2 20 cells are also white, yet the dark 3 cells are no longer en tirely black but are replaced by images. As the example of figure 2 shows the images need not be the same but can be mutually differing images. It is however also feasible that all images are alike. The images of the dark 3 cells in figure 2 25 are provided with a preselected level of darkness in compari son with the light 2 cells so as to arrange that the scanning operation will result in retrieval of the binary coded data. Further it is feasible that the images can be photographic images .
30 It is remarked that the invention is not restricted to this shown embodiment of figure 2. There are many variations feasible without departing from the invention as embodied by the appended claims. The protective scope that merits the invention is therefore entirely defined by these appended 35 claims, and the wording thereof shall not be deemed re stricted to the shown exemplary embodiment.
