Description

Electronic saving of points or money within a savings or loyalty program
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to electronic saving of points or cash within a savings or loyalty program via electronic payments at acceptors who participate as partners in the savings or loyalty program. More specifically, the invention relates to a method, a server, and a computer program product for saving points or money by a consumer within a savings or loyalty program.
Description of the prior art
It is known that consumers can receive discounts within a savings or loyalty program on presentation of a loyalty card. Airmiles and the Albert Heijn bonus card are examples of existing loyalty cards in the Netherlands. The consumer must hand in his customer card at the checkout whereby it is scanned / read in and linked to the checkout transaction. A disadvantage of these loyalty card solutions is that consumers must request the loyalty card in advance and always have to carry it with them. In addition, the transactions of the consumer are often not anonymous, but are linked to the identity and profile of the consumer. Another disadvantage is that extra peripheral equipment must be installed at the cash register for scanning the customer card and / or processing the scanned customer card data. Another existing solution for a savings or loyalty program is offered by EuroClix. Participants in this savings program can apply for a EuroClix credit card. The consumer can then pay with this credit card. This automatically saves the consumer a percentage of the total amount paid via the credit card. This discount is credited to the consumer's balance every month. A disadvantage of this solution is that consumers must request an extra credit card from EuroClix in advance, specifically for this service. This requires a lead time of a few weeks as well as an assessment of the creditworthiness of the consumer by the issuer of the credit card. Consumers also pay an annual card contribution at a given time to cover the costs. And it is not always for a merchant who participates in the savings or loyalty program that credit card customers pay because of the commissions that merchants have to pay to credit card companies. So the willingness of acceptors to participate in such a savings or loyalty program is much smaller. Some merchants do not even accept credit card payments from certain credit card companies.
There is a need for a solution for the electronic saving of points or money within a savings or loyalty program that overcomes the aforementioned problems.
Brief summary of the invention
The object of the present invention is to provide a user-friendly and easily accessible solution for electronic saving of points or money within a savings or loyalty program.
To achieve the above object, according to the invention, in a first aspect thereof, a method is provided for saving points or money by a consumer within a saving or loyalty program. The points or money are saved by making an electronic payment of a bank account number by a consumer at a merchant's. The method comprises sending a first data file from a server of the savings or loyalty program to a server of a bank. This is, for example, the merchant's bank or the consumer's bank. The first data file contains the bank account number of the consumer, possibly only the bank account number. The method further comprises receiving a second data file from the server of the bank in the server of the savings or loyalty program. The second data file comprises data indicative of a cumulative spending amount of electronic payments by the bank account number with the merchant within a predefined period. The method further comprises adjusting a point or money balance of the consumer in the server based on the data in the second data file. The cumulative spending amount is converted by means of predefined calculation rules into a number of points or a sum of money that is added to the consumer's points or money balance.
In a second aspect of the invention, a server of a savings or loyalty program is provided for saving points or money by performing an electronic payment of a bank account number by a consumer at a merchant. The server comprises sending means for sending a first data file to a server of a bank. This is, for example, the merchant's bank or the consumer's bank. The first data file contains the bank account number of the consumer. The server further comprises receiving means for receiving a second data file from the bank's server. The second data file comprises data indicative of a cumulative spending amount of electronic payments by the bank account number with the merchant within a predefined period. The server further comprises a processor for adjusting a consumer's points or money balance based on the data in the second data file. The processor is configured to convert the cumulative spending amount through predefined calculation rules into a number of points or a sum of money that is added to the consumer's points or cash balance. The server further comprises a memory for storing the consumer's points or money balance.
In a third aspect of the invention, a computer program product is provided for saving points or money by a consumer within a savings or loyalty program. The points or money are saved by making an electronic payment of a bank account number by a consumer at a merchant's. The computer program product comprises computer code parts which, if executed by a processor, are adapted to perform one or more steps of the above method.
It is thus possible to participate in a savings or loyalty program only on the basis of the account number of the consumer that is used in the electronic payment. No customer card or credit card is required in addition to the account number, at the on-site merchant no additional peripheral equipment is required in addition to the existing ATM payment machine and a cashier does not have to do anything else but carry out the PIN transaction.
In the embodiment of claims 2 and 7, the savings balance of several consumers can be updated simultaneously.

The invention has the advantage that the electronic saving of points or money within a savings or loyalty program by means of making electronic payments at participating companies is very easily accessible and user-friendly, both for the consumer and for the participating companies. The consumer can register on the spot via, for example, mobile internet and no customer or credit card is required due to the link with the bank account number with which the electronic payment takes place. The merchant who participates as a partner in the savings or loyalty program does not have to install any equipment at the cash register (other than the existing ATM payment machine) and / or instruct cashiers. The privacy of the consumer is guaranteed because individual transactions do not have to be linked to the identity and / or profile of the consumer.

Detailed description
The invention relates to linking discounts or savings campaigns (whether or not via points that can be exchanged for money or gifts) within a savings or loyalty program to electronic payments (including PIN payments and other electronic bank payments such as payment by mobile or via internet banking) by consumers at an acceptor who participates as a partner / market party in the savings or loyalty program.
The invention viewed from the consumer's perspective works as follows. The consumer registers as a participant in a savings or loyalty program. This savings or loyalty program offers discounts if the consumer makes electronic payments at market parties (for example, online or offline retailers, museums, the hospitality industry) who are affiliated as partners with the savings or loyalty program. When registering as a participant, the consumer must provide a bank account number from which the payment will be debited. After registration (this registration can be done in advance or on the spot in a shop by means of mobile internet or with other equipment connected to the internet) the consumer automatically receives discounts within the savings or loyalty program if the consumer makes electronic payments with the merchant who is affiliated with the savings or loyalty program.
The discount is in the form of points or money and this is credited to the consumer's balance within the savings or loyalty program. The discount can depend on the amount of the transaction amount and can vary per merchant.
In the embodiment as schematically shown in Fig. 1, the electronic payment takes place with a debit card 1 and a debit card payment machine 2. The invention is not limited thereto and can be used with other forms of electronic payment. The arrows in Fig. 1 indicate information or data flows between the elements shown.
A consumer buys products or services from a merchant and pays electronically. This can be done via the internet (electronic banking), via mobile or as shown in Fig. 1 with a debit card 1 and an ATM payment machine 2. An important characteristic is that the amount of money is always debited from the payment account that the consumer has entered when registering with the savings - or loyalty program.
The consumer uses the debit card 1 and places it in the pin payment machine 2. The communication between debit card 1 and payment machine 2 is indicated with arrow 11. After entering the pin code by the consumer and entering the amount to be settled by the merchant, the terminal 2 asks for approval of the transaction by the consumer (press 'YES'). The payment terminal 2 sends an authorization request 12 for payment to a server of the consumer's bank 3. After authorization of the transaction, the authorization request with response 13 follows the same route back to the terminal 2. When registering, the consumer preferably gives explicit permission to the savings or loyalty program to share his bank account number 22 of his checking account with the banks 5 of merchants and / or with the bank 3 of the consumer for the sole purpose of tracing what amount the consumer has paid electronically (for example in a specific period and per merchant) to merchants who are affiliated as partners in the savings or loyalty program.
In the example of Fig. 2, the consumer makes an electronic payment 24 with a debit card 1. The transaction data 25 (including the bank account number and transaction amount, and optionally date, time, identification of the merchant's branch and / or identification or number of payment terminal) are registered and ultimately stored at the merchant's bank 5 via the process as described in Fig. 1.
