Description

Accessory for a marble game
The invention concerns an accessory for a marble game, which marble game may be played at a playing surface 5 with the aim of moving marbles from a distance to one or more receiving openings.
Such marble game is well known and very popular, certainly among children. The intention is to move a marble with as little as possible touches in the receiving opening.
10 The first player reaching the receiving opening or with all marbles in the receiving opening will be the winner. The marble may be touched by hand, feet, other limbs or even with tools. The game can be played according to different rules, in order to make the game more or less exciting and complicating. 15 The players will have to agree on the rules prior to the game. In general the game is played on a substantially flat surface, typically a semi hardened or paved surface. In the semi hardened surface just a receiving opening has to be made to play the game. In paved surfaces, such as schoolyard, sidewalk 20 or terrace, preformed receiving openings may have been provided. Typically a tile with a recess will be placed between the other tiles. It is therefore an easily accessible game only requiring easy to carry marbles and a recess in the surface. However, if a semi hardened surface is not available 25 or no recess is preformed in the pavement, it is impossible to play the game. Moreover, such facilities are in general not available indoors and it is therefore not possible to play the game indoors. In addition the attractiveness of the game can only be enhanced by complicating the rules. Regular players 30 will be looking for more challenge. Furthermore, unintended uncontrolled movements may have as a result that the marbles end up at great distance from the receiving opening. Except that this may work de-motivating, this may also be undesirable, for instance for safety reasons when the marble 35 may end up in the water or on the street.
The present invention intends to solve one or more of the problems of the prior art as described above, and it is in particular an objective of the invention to provide an accessory for a marble game that enables safe playing of the 2 game on, in principle any surface, under any conditions, indoors and outdoors, and that may provide additional complexity and excitement to the game.
The accessory for a marble game according to the 5 invention is characterized by one or several of the appended claims .
According to a first aspect of the invention the accessory comprises one or more of the receiving openings and one or more guiding surfaces between the playing surface and 10 the one or more receiving openings. With this accessory the game may be played at any playing surface without the need that the playing surface itself is provided with a receiving opening. It may even be applied on a table. Such playing surface may be outdoors but also indoors. As the accessory may 15 be provided with several guiding surfaces and or several receiving openings the game may become more complicated and accordingly more exciting for the player of the game.
In a further aspect of invention the guiding surface is sloping. Accordingly it will become more difficult to move 20 the marble into the receiving opening.
According to the invention the one or more receiving openings may be recessed in the one or more guiding surfaces. In this way the marble may smoothly run from the guiding surface into the receiving opening. When the receiving opening 25 is deeper than the diameter of the marbles applied, the marbles collected in the receiving opening will be securely held in the receiving opening and will not form an obstacle for marbles that will have to pass the receiving opening, for instance when they have been moved to fast or have been 30 targeted on other receiving openings.
In again another aspect of the invention a receiving opening is subdivided in several receiving openings by partitions. In this way one receiving opening may provide several targets for the marble. Such targets may for instance 35 provide different scores. When the one or more partitions are removable the game will become flexible and in particular the difficulty of the game may be varied.
According to the invention at least part of the 3 receiving opening may protrude above the guiding surface. In this way an additional obstacle may be introduced, which requires the player to move the marble precisely on target. Consequently, the play will become more complicated and 5 exciting. When the dimensions of the protruding part of the several receiving opening match the diameters of the several marbles to be applied, an even more complicated and exciting game may be obtained. Marbles with a large diameter will not be able to pass the receiving opening with a dimension smaller 10 than the diameter of that marble. The complexity may be varied by having at least the protruding part of the receiving opening removable. The protruding part of the receiving opening may be connected to one or more partitions. The number of targets, the dimensions of each target and the protruding 15 openings of such target in a receiving opening may be varied.
The accessory of the invention may comprise a flange. Such flange prevents that the marble ends up at a great distance from the receiving opening, for instance by an unintended uncontrolled movements of a child. This prevents 20 de-motivation of the player and also prevents the marble to enter undesired areas, for instance undesired for safety reasons, such as the water or the street. In order to prevent the marble from rebounding, according to the invention, the flange may at least partly be provided with damping material. 25 According to a further aspect of the invention one or more of the receiving openings have a sloping lower boundary. In this way the marble in the receiving opening may be directed to a certain part of the receiving opening, leaving room for other marbles to enter the receiving opening or to 30 discharge marbles from the opening. In an further embodiment, the sloping lower boundary of the receiving opening may connected to one or more guide tracks. Such guide track may lead the marble away from the receiving opening. Such guide track may extend at least partly under the playing surface.
35 The marbles may be taken out of play and be collected under the guiding surface or for instance be released sideways. Alternatively the guide track may be recessed in the playing surface. In this way the marbles that have missed target may 4 be moved in the direction of the player and/or be reintroduced in the game. When a guide track is at least partly bounded by the flange, the flange may support guidance of the marble in the guide track and marbles rebounded by the flange may be 5 collected by the guide track.
According to again another aspect of the invention the accessory is provided with a handle. In this way the accessory is easy to carry. In particular the handle may be integrated in the flange.
10 The accessory according to the invention may be provided with electronics for recording and displaying the game result. The accessory will become even more interactive and players may observe real time the result, which will contribute to the intensity and objectivity of the game.
15 The various aspects of the invention will now be described in more detail and will be elucidated, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows in:
Figure 1 an accessory for a marble game according to the 20 invention provided with a circular opening, a partition insert and a flange;
Figure 2 an accessory for a marble game according to the invention provided with a rectangular opening, a partition insert, a flange and guide tracks; 25 Figure 3 the accessory according to figure 2 provided with protruding parts; and
Figure 4 an accessory for a marble game according to the invention provided with a rectangular opening, a partition insert, a flange, a sideward exit and a 30 handle.
The accessory for a marble game 1 of figure 1 consists of a base 2 with a guiding surface 2a. The base 2 may be placed on any suitable playing surface. For instance, such suitable playing surface may be the ground, such as a paved or 35 semi hardened surfaces, or a table. Typically the game will be played outdoors on a schoolyard, sidewalk or terrace. However, the game is also very suitable for playing indoors. As the guiding surface 2a of base 2 is sloping, a smooth connection 5 will be provided between the playing surface and the guiding surface 2a of the accessory 1. The accessory 1 is provided with a circular receiving opening 4. A player will try to move the marble 6 in one movement from the playing surface, with 5 some distance from the accessory 1, into the receiving opening 4 of the accessory 1. However, this is difficult and requires some skills and accordingly the player may move the marble 6 unintentionally too slow, too fast or may misdirect. In general several touches and movements are required before the 10 marble 6 reaches the opening 4. The winner may for instance be the player that needed the lowest number of touches/movements. The attractiveness of the game may be further enhanced by complicating the rules. The attractiveness of the game may be further enhanced by the accessory 1. In the accessory 1 of 15 figure 1 the receiving opening 4 is subdivided in receiving openings 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d by a partition insert 5. The partition insert 5 is cross-shaped and removable. The partition insert 5 will typically be used to bring additional complexity and excitement to the game. The several receiving 20 openings 4a-c may for instance each provide different scores when a marble is moved in such receiving opening 4a-c. Alternatively the game may require that each player moves a marble in each of the several receiving openings 4a-c.
The receiving opening 4 is recessed in the guiding 25 surface 2a. The receiving opening 4 is that deep that the marble 6 will not protrude and accordingly will not interfere with marbles passing the receiving opening 4 when they are moved too fast or are misdirected. Such marble will be stopped by the flange 3. This prevents that marbles are spread over a 30 too large area and also prevents that the marbles reach unsafe areas, such as the street or water. The flange 3, that surrounds a substantial part of the accessory 1, may be provided with damping material in order to prevent that marbles are rebounded or, at least, to achieve that marbles 35 are not rebounded too fast.
The accessory 1 of figure 2 also consists of a base 2 with a sloping surface 2a. The accessory is partly surrounded by a flange 3. In this case a rectangular receiving opening 7 6 is provided. The receiving opening 7 is divided in receiving openings 7a and 7b by a removable partition insert 8. Both receiving openings 7a and 7b may again distinguish themselves in score, however also in size. A small receiving opening will 5 be more difficult to reach than a large receiving opening and will accordingly be rewarded with a higher score. The rules may also provide that a large marble has to be moved into a receiving opening different from an opening for a smaller marble. Of course also more than two receiving openings may be 10 applied, for instance by using more partition inserts 8 or one partition insert that creates several receiving openings. The accessory 1 is provided with an additional rectangular receiving opening 9, at the backside of the accessory 1. The rectangular receiving opening 9 is connected with two lateral 15 guiding tracks 10. The receiving opening 9 has a sloping lower boundary such that marbles that enter the opening 9 will roll under gravity along the sloping lower boundary of opening 9 to the guiding tracks 10. The guiding tracks 10, also having a sloping lower boundary, will guide the marbles under gravity 20 in the direction of the players so that the returned marbles will remain in the game. The player may try again to move the returned marble in the receiving opening 7.
In figure 3 the accessory 1 is provided with protruding parts 11 and 12, which parts protrude above the 25 guiding surface 2a. The dimensions of the protruding parts 11 and 12 of respectively the receiving opening 7a and 7b match the diameters of the several marbles to be applied. The protruding parts 11 and 12 are removable. The game may accordingly be complicated or simplified by introducing 30 respectively removing the protruding parts 11 and 12. The protruding parts 11 and 12 may be connected to partition insert 8.
At the back side of the accessory 1 of figure 4 the receiving opening 9 is provided with a sideward exit 13. The 35 marbles that enter the receiving opening 9 will roll along the sloped lower boundary of the receiving opening 9 to exit 13. These balls are placed outside the game and may be easily collected after the game and may be used in the next game. The 7 flange 3 is at one of the lateral sides of the accessory provided with opening 14, which opening 14 will function as handle. The handle 14 makes the accessory 1 easy to carry.
To the person skilled in art it is obvious that the 5 above given embodiments represent only a few of the many possible variations in which the accessory for a marble game according to the invention may be embodied. Therefore the embodiments given here must be understood as an elucidation to the appended claims without limiting the scope of the 10 invention. Within the protective scope numerous variations are conceivable. For instance the accessory may be produced as substantial one piece, such as by injection moulding. The partition inserts and the protrusion may then be added as individual parts. Moreover, the accessory may have an internal 15 space in which space the marbles may be stored. For instance one of the receiving openings and/or the guiding tracks may be connected to such internal space. Also, the accessory may be provided with suitable electronics that record and display the game results. For instance led's may display the score. In 20 particular also several guiding surfaces may have been provided. For instance the accessory may be cross-shaped with a receiving opening in the middle. Such receiving opening may be approached from four sides or each player may then have an own playing side of the accessory. Even, the accessory may 25 have the shape of a specific company logo and serve as a giveaway.
