Title: Plant growing kit for postal distribution
Field of the invention
The invention relates to a plant growing kit, comprising a small amount of soil and plant seeds in a package for use to send the kit by mail and 5 using the package as a plant pot.
Background
It is known to provide a kit for growing plants from seeds as a gift 10 article. The known kit contains a sealed package containing a small amount of soil and plant seeds. When the top of the package is removed, the package can be set-up as a plant pot containing the soil and the seeds can be grown in this pot.
A stand-up package is known for this purpose, made of sheets 15 flexible material such as aluminum covered polymer foil. The bottom edges of these sheets form a base on which the package can be made to stand up. Edges of a folded bottom foil are sealed to the bottom edges of the sheets, to allow for a flexible spacing between the bottom edges. Side and top edges of the sheets are sealed to each other, so that a sealed off space is formed between the 20 sheets, in which the soil and plant seeds are provided.
When the top edges of the sheets are torn off, the user has access to the bag of seeds and the soil. The user can then set up the package on the lower edges of the sheets, sow the seeds in the soil between the seeds and tend the germinating plants.
25
Summary
Among others it is an object to facilitate postal mailing of this type of plant growing kit.
2
According to one aspect a plant growing kit is provided that is adapted to be sent by postal delivery. In an embodiment the plant growing kit comprises a a stand-up package for postal transmission containing soil and seeds, the package comprising a first and second wall sheet or sheet part, 5 facing each other and joined at their top and side edges, and a folded bottom sheet or sheet part joined to the bottom edges, forming a space between the first and second wall sheets and bottom sheet or sheet parts that contains the soil, wherein the second wall sheet or sheet part comprises a first and second layer joined to each other along a closed perimeter, the seeds being located 10 between the first and second layer. In this way it is ensured that the seeds can be kept dry before use and during mailing. In an embodiment the package has a postal address label for filling in a postal address in or on to the first or second wall sheet or sheet part.
In an embodiment, the package has a perforation through the first 15 wall sheet or sheet part and the folded bottom sheet or sheet part, the perforation allowing for the escape of air from said space. This makes it possible to compress the package during postal handling. Preferably, when the package is assembled, air rich soil is used, at least part of the air being pushed out after the package has been closed, for example during mail handling.
20 In an embodiment, the perforation is located in the first wall sheet above a top level that will be assumed by the soil when the package is made to stand upright resting on the bottom edges. This prevents problems during use. Preferably, said level is the level that will be assumed by the soil when a top part of the first and second wall sheet is cut off to expose the soil from above. 25 In an embodiment, the perforation may be located above half the height of the package.
In a further embodiment, a perforation is provided through at least one of the first wall sheet and the folded bottom sheet, or an area of the second wall sheet where the first and second layer are joined to each other, without 30 perforation to a volume between the first and second layer wherein the seeds 3 are located. This makes it possible to compress the package during postal handling without risking that the perforation exposes the seeds to moisture.
In an embodiment, the first wall sheet or sheet part comprises a third and fourth layer joined to each at least along the side edges, the 5 perforation being present in both the third and fourth layer. In this way the package can be easily manufactured from one base sheet. The third and fourth layer may be the same as the first and second layer of the second wall sheet. In an embodiment a postal address label for filling in a postal address may be provided located between the third and fourth sheet. In this way an address 10 may be added without exposing the seeds to moisture. The outermost layer of the any one or both of the wall sheets may be opaque to allow itrems between the layers to be viewed. Preferably, the wall sheets themselves are opaque to shield the soil from light, for example by making the innermost layer of the first and second layer and the innermost layer of the third and fourth layer are 15 opaque.
The plant growing kit may be used as a postal package, the package forming the exterior of a postal item, exposed to other postal items during mail handling. When the kit is used to grow plants from the seeds, by cutting off a top of part of the first and second wall sheet or sheet part below a height where 20 they are joined after reception of the package from the mail, sowing the seeds in the soil in said space when the top part has been cut off and allowing plants to grow from the seeds while the package stands upright resting on the bottom edge.
25 Brief description of the drawing
These and other objects and advantageous aspect will become apparent from a description of exemplary embodiments, using the following figures.
30 Figure 1 illustrates the components of an exemplary stand-up package; 4
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the package;
Figure 2A shows a horizontal cross-section through the package;
Figure 3 shows a cross-section through the package during plant growing; 5 Figures 3a,b show a cross-section through an alternative;
Figure 4 shows a front view of a sheet.
Detailed description of exemplary embodiments 10 By way of example, a stand-up package comprising a plurality of sheets will be described. Figure 1 illustrates the components of such an exemplary stand-up package, including a first and second sheet 10, 12 and a folded bottom sheet 14. A perforation 16 is provided in first sheet 10. The sheets 10, 12, 14 may comprise a polymer foil covered by an aluminum (Al) 15 layer for example.
In the illustrated example, the package is formed by sealing the edges of the sheets. Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the package, wherein the top edges of first and second sheet 10, 12 are connected at a top seal 18a and edges of folded bottom sheet 14 is connected to the bottom edges 20 of first and second sheet 10, 12 at bottom seals 18b, c. Further seals connect the side edges of first and second sheet 10, 12. Figure 2A shows a horizontal cross-section showing the further seals 20, 22 (the further seals are not visible in the cross-section of figure 2). The seals may be realized for example by adhering the sheets to each other along a band at the edge, for example by 25 merging the sheets by heating or by means of glue. The width of the band may vary be constant along the edge, or it may vary. In particular the bands in which bottom sheet 14 is sealed to first and second sheet 10, 12 may be relatively wide at the side edges of first and second sheet 10, 12 and become narrower with distance from the side edges. An opening may be provided 30 through the band at the top edge, for hanging the package.
5
The sheets with the seals form a closed space in which soil 19 is provided. The soil may be a mixture of components. It may be peat soil for example, or peat rich soil. Soil with a relatively high air content may be used, which allows the soil to be compressed locally so that the package can flattened 5 at its thickest point.
Perforation 16, which lies in a part of first sheet 10 that is not sealed to the other sheets, allows air to enter into or escape from the closed space.
This makes it possible to compress the package to make it suitable for postal handling.
10 In an embodiment, at least second sheet 12, and preferably bioth first and second sheet 10, 12, comprises a first and second layer 30, 32 attached to each other at their edges, but unattached in an area within the attached edges, so that a closed off space is formed between the first and second layer 30,32. The first layer may be first polymer foil covered by an 15 aluminum (Al) layer for example and the second layer may be a second polymer foil. In an embodiment the outermost layer 32 may be optically transparent. A bag 34 with plant seeds is provided in the closed off space between the first and second layer 30, 32. The closed off space between the first and second layer 30, 32 ensures that the seeds in bag 34 are kept dry 20 before use and during postal handling. It may be noted that the bag with plant seeds and perforation 16 are provided in mutually different ones of first and second sheets 10, 12. Thus, the function of perforation 16, which may have the effect that moisture enters the package, can be performed while the plant seeds can be kept dry.
25 The package contains a postal mailing label on or in one of the first and second sheets 10, 12, of writable material such as paper, containing lines for writing the name and postal address of an addressee.
In use, a user may cut off the top part of first and second sheet 10, 12 including at least the sealed top edges, to open the soil 19 to access. Thus a 30 plant pot is formed, which can be made to stand up as shown in figure 3.
6
Furthermore the removal of the top edge provides access to the space between the first and second layer of second sheet, which allows the user to take out the bag of seeds. The user then plants the seeds in soil 19.
Although an embodiment has been discussed wherein second sheet 5 12 comprises a first and second layer 30, 32, it should be appreciated that first sheet 10 may similarly comprise a first and second layer. This is illustrated in figures 3a,b, with layers 30a,b in first sheet 10. The postal mailing label may be provided between the first and second layer in the first sheet when the outermost layer is transparent. Moreover, it should be realized that the use of 10 a plant growing kit with a package that comprises a sheet with a first and second layer need not be limited to packages that have a perforation.
Although for the sake of illustration an example of has been shown wherein separate sheets are used, it should be appreciated that two or more of the sheets may be realized by means of a single sheet. For example first and 15 second sheet 10, 12 may be formed from a single sheet by folding along the side edge. In this case, one of the further seals 20, 22 at the side edges may not be needed. Similarly, first and second sheet 10, 12 and bottom sheet may be realized from a single sheet by multiple folding at the bottom, although it is preferred to provide for a connection band between the sheets or sheet parts 20 along the bottom edge of the package to help make it stand up.
Although an embodiment has been shown wherein the perforation 16 is provided at a relatively high position on the first sheet 10 the package, for example above half height of the package, for example between 45-55 millimeter from the top of the package, it should be appreciated that it may be 25 located at any position on the first 10, sheet, or even in the bottom sheet 14. However, it is preferred to use a perforation 16 at least above half height, or above the top level that will be assumed by the soil when the package is used as a plant pot. The perforation 16 may be provided at, or at less than, 25 millimeter below the lower edge of the top seal between first and second sheets 30 10, 12. This reduces problems during storage and/or use. Preferably, the top 7 edge is cut off the top part of first and second sheet 10, 12 at or above the perforation 16.
Preferably, the size of the perforation is so small (e.g. less than 2 millimeter diameter (measured along the direction wherein the diameter is 5 maximal if the perforation is not circular), a diameter of 1 mm may be used for example) that no soil will leak out. In an embodiment the perforation 16 is provided in second sheet 12. In this embodiment, first and second layer 30, 32 may be sealed to each other in an area where first and second sheets 10, 12 are not sealed to each other and perforation 16 may be located in this area. This 10 prevents moisture from reaching the bag of seeds between the first and second layer 30, 32. A similar construction may be used also if perforation 16 is provided in first sheet 10. In this embodiment, first and second layer 30, 32 may be sealed to each other in an area where first and second sheets 10, 12 are not sealed to each other and perforation 16 may be located in this area.
15 Figure 4 shows a front view of first sheet 10, including dimensions of the seals at the edges of first sheet 10. The seals at the bottom and size edges are shown by shading. The seal at the top edge is not indicated explicitly. An opening through the seal at the top edge is provided to suspend the package. This opening is isolated from the space for the soil, in the sense that the 20 opening does not allow air to enter into that space.
