Description
System and method for verification of an ID document
The present invention relates to a system and a method for verification of an ID document. In particular, the invention relates to a mobile system for verification of an 5 ID document.
Systems for verification of ID documents are known in the art. At various instances where one is obliged to identify, a reader or a scanner for a passport or driving licence is present. Mobile systems are also known, for example for use by delivery services or 10 entrance ID control at festivals. The latter systems usually comprise an ID document scanner, coupled to a laptop via a USB connection. Such combination may be transported in a case, which may further comprise a battery for powering the ID document scanner.
15 The systems for verification according to the art, however, have various disadvantages.
First of all, since the ID scanners known up to now, are limited to communication via an USB port, which limits their use area to a cord lengths distance from a computer they are connected to. Furthermore, only one computer can make use of such a scanner, while for example at an intake desk at a festival, it may be desirable to verify the 20 identification of multiple people at a time.
It is a goal of the present invention to provide a system for verification of an ID document that takes away the above disadvantages, or at least provides a useful alternative to the state of the art.
25
The invention thereto proposes a system for verification of an ID document, comprising an ID document scanner; configured for performing an optical scan of the ID document and at least one of performing an infrared, near infrared, ultraviolet or coaxial white scan of the ID document, an application server computer coupled to the ID document 30 scanner; and comprising a port for establishing a network connection with at least one client device; wherein the application server is configured to provide a set of control functions for the ID document scanner to the at least one client computer; and to provide scanned data from the ID document to the at least one client computer.
2
The above described system enables the use of an ID document scanner, which is a device that is known as such, as a network device, for client computers forming part of the network of the application server computer. The server computer can be formed by a 5 regular PC, but preferably it is a dedicated application server. Such a server may consist of a processor unit without user interfaces such as a keyboard, mouse and monitor, in order to keep it light-weight and small, which makes it more easily portable. The server computer may run a platform that offers a set of functions for operating the ID document scanner. These functions may be invoked from client or server applications, 10 and the data read from the scanned ID document may be sent to the client, or stored on the application server for later reference. By offering a wireless network connection, the application server enables the use of a remote client device, such as a handheld device, a tablet or a laptop computer or a network monitor or touch screen for example, which may be operated at a distance from the application server. This is especially convenient 15 for use by delivery services, while handing out packages or registered mail that has to be signed for, since it is common practice nowadays to register the signature electronically, by means of writing on a touch screen. With the systems according to the state of the art, the computer or handheld device needed to be physically coupled with the ID document scanner, which was inconvenient. The possibility to connect wirelessly 20 with the present invention solves this problem, since it is now sufficient to take the handheld device, which then connects wirelessly to the application server.
In an embodiment, the ID document scanner and the application server are integrated in a single device. The wireless communication means may also be integrated in the same 25 device.
Further identification devices, such as an iris-scanner or a face-scanner may be coupled to the application server. The application server verifies the data and determines the authenticity properties.
30 In an embodiment, the application server is coupled to a database with ID Document formats, for comparing the properties of a scanned ID document with a corresponding format. After scanning a document, the type of the document is determined based on stored features of a number of document types (like a passport, a driving licence and an 3 identity card), and the database is used to determine which specific details of the document are to be verified.
Moreover, the application server may be coupled to a central database with actual 5 identity document details, to verify if the specific document is valid, and if the person mentioned on it exists. The information may further be used to determine if the person that is verified, is for example the addressee of a package or a registered letter. For this latter purpose, the server may comprise a document verification application, configured to compare the ID document with an addressee of a document or item to be delivered.
10
In yet another embodiment, the server is coupled to a database with a number of addressees of documents or items to be delivered, and wherein the application server comprises an application for calculating an optimised delivery route for the documents or items to be delivered. The delivery route is then presented on the client computer, 15 which may be a hand-held device.
In yet another embodiment, the port for establishing a network connection comprises a wireless connection. This may be a wireless ethernet, a GPS, GPRS, UMTS, Bluetooth, 3G or any other wireless connection. The connection may be used for contact between 20 the client and the server, but also for accessing remote databases by the server.
In another embodiment, the system comprises a common battery, for powering the ID document scanner and the application server computer. The use of a common battery leads to further weight and space reduction, and thus facilitates the use of the system for 25 mobile purposes.
The invention further relates to a system as described above, with a client computer, configured for wireless communication with the application server and configured to run an ID document verification application at the server. Such a client computer may 30 be a tablet computer, or a network display, such as a network touch screen, a smartphone.
The invention also relates to a case, comprising a system as described above, wherein a lid of the case comprises a sensor for providing a signal indicating a closed state of the 4 case to the ID document scanner and/or the server, and wherein the ID document scanner and/or the server are configured to switch to standby mode in dependence of the signal.
5 The invention will now be elucidated into more detail with reference to the following figures, wherein: - Figure 1 shows a schematic view on a system according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a view of a case comprising at least part of the system from figure 1; 10 - Figure 3 shows a sequence diagram of a method according to the present invention.
Figure 1 shows a system 1 for verification of an ID document, comprising an ID document scanner, 2 configured for performing an optical scan of the ID document 3 or 15 4, an infrared scan of the ID document 3 or 4, and a chip readout of the ID document 3 or 4. The system further comprises an application server computer 5, coupled to the ID document scanner 2 via a USB connection 6 and comprising a port 8 for establishing a network connection with at least one client computer 9, wherein the application server 2 is configured to provide a set of control functions for the ID document scanner 2 to the 20 at least one client computer 9, and scanned data from the ID document 3 or 4 to the at least one client computer 9.
The application server computer 5 is coupled to a first database 10 with ID Document formats, for comparing the properties of a scanned ID document with a corresponding 25 format. In the example shown, the coupling takes place via the wireless network connector 8 of the server computer 5. The server may comprise a document verification application, configured to compare the ID document 3, 4 with an addressee of a document or item to be delivered. The application server computer 5 may further be coupled 11 to a database with a number of addressees of documents or items to be 30 delivered, and wherein the application server 5 comprises an application to calculate an optimised delivery route for the documents or items.
The system further comprises a common battery 7, for powering the ID Document scanner 2 and the application server computer 5. The client computer 9 is configured for 5 wireless communication with the application server 5; and to run an ID document verification application at the server. The client computer 9 may be a tablet computer, or a network display, such as a network touch screen, or a smartphone.
5 Figure 2 shows a case 12, comprising a system according to claim 6, wherein a lid 13 of the case comprises a sensor 15 for providing a signal indicating a closed state of the case to the ID document scanner 2 and/or the application server5 , and wherein the ID document scanner and/or the server are configured to switch to standby mode in dependence of the signal. This ensures that when the case is closed, no useless energy 10 consumption takes place.
Figure 3 shows a sequence diagram 16 of a method according to the present invention. The diagram shows a timeline 17, along which activities are shown of a document scanner 18, the application server 19, and a client device 20. In an initial situation 21, 15 the document scanner 18, an application server 19, and a client device 20 are in an equilibrium state, each waiting for an input and checking 22 each other status. In a next step 23, the client device 20 may send 24 a request for a scan via the application server 19 to the ID document scanner 18, or the process may be triggered 25 by placing a document in the document reader.
20
The ID document scanner then returns the images to the Application server 19, which processes images, and meanwhile communicates the progress 28 and/or finished status 29 to the client 20. When the scan is performed, the scan result 30 is transmitted 31 to the client.
25 A number of actions 32 may be performed by the client, and further requests 33 may be sent to the application server 19.
