Description

Title: Assembly, peeler, pricker, and method of peeling.
The invention relates to an assembly of a peeler for peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit and a pricker that can be pricked into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit for holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling, the peeler comprising a body and 5 comprising a knife for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit, the knife being mounted, preferably rotatably around a longitudinal axis of the knife, to the body, wherein at least part of the body forms a peeler handle for holding the peeler during peeling. The invention also relates to the peeler of the assembly. The invention also relates to the pricker of the invention. The 10 invention also relates to a method of peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit by means of an assembly comprising a peeler and a pricker, the peeler comprising a body and comprising a knife for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit, the knife being mounted, preferably rotatably around a longitudinal axis of the knife, to the body, the method comprising holding, 15 during peeling, a peeler handle of the peeler that is formed by at least a part of the body, and comprises pricking the pricker into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit and holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit by means of the pricker during peeling.
A known method of peeling a potato is described in 20 Gebrauchsmusterschrift DE 20 2004 018 407 Ul. The assembly used for peeling shown in DE 20 2004 018 407 Ul comprises a fork and a knife. By pricking the fork into the hot potato, the hot potato can be held during peeling of the potato. Thus, contact between a hand of the user and the hot potato may be substantially prevented.
25 However, not all forks and all knifes are equally suitable for holding respectively peeling of potato’s or other pieces of vegetable and/or fruit. For example, a user may have a dedicated knife for peeling and a dedicated fork for holding the potato. However, when the user wishes to start peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit using his or her dedicated knife, the 2 dedicated fork may be hard to find. The, the user may decide to use another fork. However, using this other fork may be problematic. For example, the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit may get loose from the fork, may be damaged by the fork, or may be hard to remove from the fork. Hence, using the 5 other fork instead of the dedicated fork may go at the expense of a peeling result.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved assembly of a peeler for peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit and a pricker that can be pricked into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of 10 fruit for holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling.
Thereto the invention provides an assembly of a peeler for peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit and a pricker that can be pricked into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit for holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling, the peeler comprising a body and 15 comprising a knife for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit, the knife being mounted, preferably rotatably around a longitudinal axis of the knife, to the body, wherein at least part of the body forms a peeler handle for holding the peeler during peeling, wherein, in the body, a cavity is provided, wherein the cavity and the pricker are arranged for releasably fixing the 20 pricker in the cavity. The cavity enables fixing the pricker in the cavity. With the pricker releasably fixed in the cavity, the pricker is available when the user wishes to start peeling and has the peeler available. Thus, the peeler provided with the cavity enables that looking for the pricker can be prevented when the peeler is available for peeling. Hence, when the peeler is available, 25 the user may use the pricker that is releasably fixed in the peeler without having to use another, less suitable, pricker. Thus, optionally, the pricker is releasably fixed in the cavity.
Additionally, the assembly enables peeling by moving away the peeler from a user of the peeler. In this way, a probability of wounding e.g. a 30 hand or finger of a user of the peeler may be diminished. In particular, the 3 peeler may be a potato peeler. Optionally, the knife may have an elongated shape and be provided with a longitudinal slot that is provided with at least one sharp edge for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. The at least one sharp edge may extend along the slot. The invention is considered 5 especially valuable when the peeler is a potato peeler, as a potato peeler is suitable for moving away from a user during peeling.
The invention also provides, according to an object of the invention, the peeler and the pricker. Hence, the peeler and/or the pricker may be suitable for use in an assembly according to the invention.
10 Embodiments described herein may relate to the assembly, to the peeler and/or to the pricker.
In an embodiment, the cavity and the pricker are arranged for releasably fixing the pricker in the cavity by means of a snap-fit connection. Preferably, the cavity has a cavity surface and the pricker has an outer pricker 15 surface, wherein a ridge is provided on the cavity surface and a fixing notch is provided in the outer pricker surface, wherein the ridge fits at least partly in the fixing notch when the pricker is fixed in the cavity, so that the fixing notch and the ridge form at least part of the snap-fit connection. A snap-fit connection may provide a relatively firm connection between the pricker and 20 the peeler. Such a connection may also be relatively easy to release.
In an embodiment, the cavity and the pricker are arranged for releasably fixing the pricker in the cavity by means of a clamped joint and/or a wringing fit.
In an embodiment, the cavity has a cavity surface and the pricker 25 has an outer pricker surface, wherein, on the cavity surface and/or on the outer pricker surface, a flexible material is provided so that the cavity and the pricker are arranged for releasably fixing the pricker in the cavity by deforming the flexible material.
4
In an embodiment, the cavity forms an opening through the body at a position of the peeler handle. In that way, at two opposing sides of the peeler it may be detected whether the pricker is fixed to the peeler.
In an embodiment, the opening through the body is dimensioned so 5 that a user can shift part of a hand of the user, preferably at least one finger of the hand of the user, more preferably all fingers of the hand of the user, through the opening through the body. The opening through the body may provide for an improved grip by a user. Such an improved grip may be especially useful for a user with a decreased functionally in his or her hand.
10 When the at least one finger is shifted through the opening through the body, less force may be necessary for holding the peeler handle during peeling.
In an embodiment, the cavity is dimensioned for fixing therein the pricker so that the pricker does not project out of the cavity. As a result, when the pricker is received in the cavity, the assembly may occupy a relatively 15 small amount of space. In addition, in this embodiment, safety for a user may be enhanced when the user grasps the assembly in order to use it.
In an embodiment, the peeler is provided, at an end part of the peeler, with an additional knife for taking eyes out of potatoes. As a result of the presence of the additional knife, a user does not have to put the peeler 20 away and take a pointed knife or the like for taking eyes out of potato’s, when the user wishes to take out the eyes of a potato.
In an embodiment, the pricker comprises a pricker handle for holding the pricker during peeling, and comprises a blade that is, in use, rigidly connected to the pricker handle and can be pricked into the piece of 25 vegetable and/or the piece of fruit for holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling. Thus, a user can hold the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit by holding the pricker handle when the pricker is pricked in the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
In an embodiment, the pricker handle is provided with an opening 30 through the pricker handle that is dimensioned so that the user can shift part 5 of a hand, preferably at least one finger, more preferably all fingers of the hand, through the opening through the pricker handle. In that way, an improved grip may be provided. Such an improved grip may be especially useful for a user with a decreased functionally in his or her hand. When the at 5 least one finger is shifted through the opening through the pricker handle, less force may be necessary for holding the pricker handle during peeling. The opening in the pricker handle may also be beneficial for releasing the pricker handle from the peeler.
In an embodiment, the pricker is provided with a bumper that is 10 positioned, in use, between the pricker handle and the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Such a bumper may prevent direct contact between the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit and the pricker handle.
In an embodiment, the blade comprises an end part for at least partly penetrating into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
15 In an embodiment, the end part of the blade has a bevelled or chamfered edge for facilitating at least partly penetrating into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Preferably, an angle of the bevelled or chamfered edge is in a range from 30 to 60 degrees, and preferably is approximately 45 degrees. Preferably, the end part of the blade has a rounded 20 shape for facilitating at least partly penetrating into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Experiments performed by the inventor showed that such an angle and/or shape may be beneficial for peeling.
In an embodiment, the blade is provided with at least one blade notch. The at least one blade notch may prevent that the pricker comes loose 25 too easily from the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Also, the at least one blade notch may, optionally, not form a significant obstacle for pricking the blade into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Hence, the blade notch may provide a relatively good attachment of the pricker to the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit when the pricker has at least partly 30 penetrated into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Thus, in 6 particular, the blade notch may enable a direction of movement of the peeler during peeling that is directed away from the user. Such may be especially valuable when the peeler is a potato peeler. Preferably, the at least one blade notch is positioned adjacent to the end part of the blade.
5 In an embodiment, the blade has an elongated, preferably rectangular, shape. Preferably, the blade has a surface that comprises at least two main blade surfaces and at least two blade edges, said main blade surfaces and said blade edges extending along a longitudinal direction of the blade from the pricker handle to the end part of the blade.
10 In an embodiment, the blade edges are substantially straight except for the at least one notch. Such straightness of the blade edges may substantially prevent lateral movement of the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit when the pricker is pricked in the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
15 In an embodiment, the at least one blade notch is provided in at least one of the blade edges. Preferably, each blade edge is provided with at least one blade notch. Such embodiments may provide improved functioning of the blade notch. Preferably, the blade notch has a maximum depth of at least 0.5 millimeter, preferably at least 1 millimeter or 1.5 millimeter.
20 In an embodiment, a distance between two blade edges measured perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the blade is in a range from 6 millimeter to 10 millimeter, preferably approximately 8 millimeter.
Experiment performed by the inventor showed that such an distance may on the one hand enable a relatively good penetration of the pricker into the piece 25 of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit, and at the other hand enables a relatively good attachment of the pricker to the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit when the pricker has at least partly penetrated into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
7
It is another object of the invention to provide an improved method of peeling a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit by means of an assembly comprising a peeler and a pricker.
Thereto the invention provides a method of peeling a piece of 5 vegetable and/or a piece of fruit by means of an assembly comprising a peeler and a pricker, the peeler comprising a body and comprising a knife for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit, the knife being mounted, preferably rotatably around a longitudinal axis of the knife, to the body, the method comprising holding, during peeling, a peeler handle of the peeler that 10 is formed by at least a part of the body, and comprises pricking the pricker into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit and holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit by means of the pricker during peeling, wherein the method comprises releasing the pricker from, and/or releasably fixing to pricker in, a cavity that is provided in the body.
15 Preferably, the method is carried out by using an assembly according to the invention, peeler according to the invention, and/or pricker according to the invention.
The invention will be illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: 20
Figure 1A shows a perspective view of an assembly of a peeler and a pricker in a first embodiment according to the invention;
Figure IB shows a photo of the assembly of figure 1A;
Figure 1C shows another photo of the assembly of figure 1A; 25 Figure 2 shows a photo of a peeler of the assembly in the first embodiment, together with a hand of a user;
Figure 3A shows a top view of a pricker of the assembly in the first embodiment;
Figure 3B shows a side view of a pricker of the assembly in the first 30 embodiment; 8
Figure 4A illustrates releasing a pricker from a cavity that is provided in a body of a peeler and illustrates pricking the pricker into a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit;
Figure 4B illustrates peeling; and 5 Figure 4C illustrates taking eyes out of potatoes.
Unless stated otherwise, like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings.
Figure 1A shows a perspective view of an assembly 2 of a peeler 4 10 and a pricker 6 in a first embodiment according to the invention. Figure IB
shows a photo of the assembly 2 of figure 1A. Figure 1C shows another photo of the assembly 2 of figure 1A. The pricker 6 can be pricked into a piece of vegetable and/or a piece of fruit for holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling. The peeler 4 is arranged for peeling the piece of 15 vegetable, e.g. a potato, a carrot, and/or a beet. Alternatively or additionally, the peeler 4 is arranged for peeling the piece of fruit, e.g. an apple and/or a pear. The peeler 4 comprises a body 8. The peeler 4 further comprises a knife 10 for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. In this example, a part of the body 8 forms a peeler handle 12 for holding the peeler 4 during 20 peeling.
The knife 10 may be rotatably mounted to the body 8. For example, the body 8 may be provided with bearings 14 in which the knife 10 can rotate. The knife 10 may in general extend along a longitudinal axis 11 of the knife. The knife may be mounted in the body rotatably around the longitudinal axis 25 11 of the knife 10. However, in other embodiments, the knife 10 may be rigidly mounted to the body 8. In this example, the peeler 4 is a potato peeler 4 (in the Dutch language also referred to as a ‘dunschiller’). Then, the knife 10 may have an elongated shape and be provided with a longitudinal slot 16 that is provided with one or two sharp knife edges for peeling the piece of vegetable 30 and/or the piece of fruit. Said one or two knife edges may extend along the slot 9 16. The longitudinal slot 16 and the longitudinal axis 11 may extend approximately in parallel with each other.
In the body 8, a cavity 20 may be provided. In this example, the cavity 20 forms an opening 22 through the body 8. However, in other 5 embodiments, the cavity 20 may be provided with a cavity bottom that limits the cavity 20. The cavity 20, here the opening 22 through the body 8, and the pricker 6 are arranged for releasably fixing the pricker 6 in the cavity 20, here in the opening 22 through the body 8. As shown in figures 1A and IB, the pricker 6 may be received and fixed in the opening 22 through the body 8. As 10 shown in figure 1C, the pricker 6 may be released from the opening 22 through the body 8. The cavity 20 enables to have the pricker 6 available to the user when the peeler 4 is available to the user. Additionally, as a result of the cavity 20, an amount of material to be used for manufacturing the body 8 of the peeler 4 may be reduced.
15 Herein, the term ‘fixing’ may be interpreted broadly. E.g., the term ‘releasably fixing the pricker 6 in the cavity 20’ may comprise releasably attaching, mounting, and/or putting the pricker 6 in the cavity 20. As a result of said fixing, it may be prevented that the pricker falls out of the cavity 20 during normal storing and handling of the assembly with the pricker 6 fixed in 20 the cavity 20.
More in general, the body 8 may have an outer body surface 26. The cavity 20 may have a cavity surface 28. The cavity 20 may define a cavity edge 30 that separates the cavity surface 28 from the outer body surface 26. The pricker 6 may have an outer pricker surface 32. A ridge 24 may be provided on 25 the cavity surface 28. The ridge 24 may extend approximately in parallel way the cavity edge 30. A fixing notch 34 may be provided in the outer pricker surface 32. At least one of the body 8 and the pricker 6 may comprise a plastic. This plastic may be somewhat resilient but still relatively stiff.
In the assembly 2 according to the first embodiment, the opening 22 30 through the body 8 and the pricker 6 may be arranged for releasably fixing the 10 pricker 6 in the opening 22 through the body 8, by means of a snap-fit connection. Thereto, the ridge 24 may be provided in the opening 22 through the body 8. Furthermore, the fixing notch 34 may be provided in the outer pricker surface 32. The ridge 24 may fits at least partly in the fixing notch 34.
5 Such fitting may be realised when the pricker 6 is fixed in the cavity 20. Thus, the fixing notch 34 and the ridge 24 may form at least part of the snap-fit connection. The resilient material, e.g. the plastic, of the body 8 and/or the pricker 6 may enable the snap-fit connection.
In another embodiment, the cavity 20 and the pricker 6 may be 10 arranged for releasably fixing the pricker 6 in the cavity 20 by means of a clamped joint and/or a wringing fit. A clamped joint and/or a wringing fit may refer to a broad range of connections wherein friction between the outer pricker surface 32 and the cavity surface 28 may prevent release of the pricker 6 from the cavity 20. A force exerted by a user of the assembly 2 may be 15 needed to overcome the friction and release the pricker 6 from the cavity 20. Examples of such a clamped joint are known as such to the skilled person so that a further description is deemed superfluous.
In yet another embodiment, on the cavity surface 28 and/or on the outer pricker surface 32, a flexible material may provided. This flexible 20 material may be deformed when the pricker 6 is fixed in the cavity 20. In that way, the cavity 20 and the pricker 6 may be arranged for releasably fixing the pricker 6 in the cavity 20 by deforming the flexible material.
The cavity 20 may be dimensioned for fixing therein the pricker 6 so that the pricker 6 does not project out of the cavity 20. Then, when fixed in the 25 cavity 20, the pricker 6 may e.g. not project past the cavity edge 30.
The peeler 4 may be provided, at an end part 21 of the peeler 4, with an additional knife 23 for taking eyes 25 out of potatoes. Such eyes 25 are e.g. indicated in figures 4A-4C.
Figure 2 shows a photo of the peeler 4 of the assembly 2 in the first 30 embodiment, together with a hand 36 of a user. The opening 22 through the 11 body 8 may be provided a position of the peeler handle 12. In this example, the opening 22 through the body 8 may be dimensioned so that a user can shift all fingers of the hand 36 of the user through the opening 22 through the body 8.
Figure 3A shows a top view of the pricker 6 of the assembly 2 in the 5 first embodiment. Figure 3B shows a side view of the pricker 6 of the assembly 2 in the first embodiment. The pricker 6 may comprise a pricker handle 40 for holding the pricker 6 during peeling. The pricker 6 may comprises a blade 42 that is, in use, rigidly connected to the pricker handle 40 and can be pricked into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit for holding the piece of 10 vegetable and/or the piece of fruit during peeling.
The pricker handle 40 may be provided with an opening 44 through the pricker handle 40. The opening 44 through the pricker handle 40 may be dimensioned so that a user can shift part of a hand 36 of the user, preferably at least one finger of the user, more preferably all fingers of the hand 36 of the 15 user, through the opening 44 through the pricker handle 40. The pricker 6 may be provided with a bumper 46. The bumper 46 may be positioned, in use, between the pricker handle 40 and the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. The bumper may prevent that the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit reaches the hand and/or peeler handle. As a result, space may be 20 available for a user to peel the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit relatively close to the peeler handle.
The blade 42 may be provided with at least one blade notch 48, in this example two blade notches 48. The blade notches 48 may be positioned adjacent to the end part 50 of the blade 42. Said end part 50 is suitable for at 25 least partly penetrating into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
More in general, the at least one blade notch 48, e.g. the two blade notches 48, may be positioned within 20 millimeter, preferably 15 millimeter, more preferably 10 millimeter, from an edge 51 of the end part 50. A radius of curvature R2 and/or a depth Z of at least one, e.g. two, blade notches 48 may 30 be in a range from 1 to 3 millimeter, preferably approximately 2 millimeter.
12
As is visible in figure 3A and 3B, the blade 42 may have an elongated shape. Thus, in a longitudinal direction Fi of the blade 42, the blade 42 may extent over a significantly larger, e.g. three, five, ten or more than ten times larger, distance than in a transverse direction F2 of the blade 42 that is 5 directed transverse to the longitudinal direction Fi of the blade 42.
The blade 42 may have a surface that comprises at least two main blade surfaces 52 and at least two blade edges 54. The main blade surfaces 52 and the blade edges 54 may extend along the longitudinal direction Fi of the blade 42 from the pricker handle 40 to the end part 50 of the blade 42. The 10 blade 42 may have a rectangular shape. Hence, the blade edges 54 may be formed by side surfaces of the blade 42 comprised by the surface of the blade 42. Said side surface may connect the main blade surfaces 52 with each other.
The at least one blade notch 48 may be provided in at least one of the blade edges 54. E.g., each blade edge 54 may be provided with at least one 15 blade notch 48. In figures 3A and 3B, two blade notches 48 may be provided in the blade etches. One blade notch 48 may be provided in one blade edge 54. Another blade notch 48 may be provided in another blade edge 54. Two blade notches 48 may be positioned opposite to each other. Thus, more in general, two blade notches 48 may define a neck portion 49 of the blade 42. Such blade 20 notches and/or neck portion may prevent that the pricker 6 comes loose too easily from the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Also, such blade notches 48 and/or neck portion 49 may not form a significant obstacle for pricking the blade 42 into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit.
A distance W between two blade edges 54 measured perpendicular 25 to the longitudinal direction Fi of the blade 42 may be in a range from 6 millimeter to 10 millimeter, preferably approximately 8 millimeter. A length Li of the blade 42 measured from the top part 50 to the bumper 46 may be in a range from 20 to 40 millimeter, e.g. approximately 27 millimeter. A length L2 measured from a center of the blade notch 48 to the bumper 46 may be in a 30 range from 10 to 30 millimeter, e.g. approximately 19 millimeter. A thickness 13 D of the blade may be in a range between 1 and 3 millimeter, e.g. approximately 2 millimeter.
The end part 50 of the blade 42 may have a bevelled edge 51. Alternatively, the end part 50 of the blade 42 may have a chamfered edge.
5 Such a bevelled or chamfered edge 51 may facilitate at least partly penetrating into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit. Preferably, an angle a of the bevelled or chamfered edge 51 is in a range from 30 to 60 degrees, and preferably is approximately 45 degrees. Preferably, the end part 50 of the blade 42 has a rounded shape. E.g., the edge 51 of the top part 50 may extend 10 approximately along an arc of a circle or an ellipse. A radius of curvature R5 of said arc may e.g. be in a range from 4 to 10 millimeter, preferably approximately 6 millimeter.
Figures 4A-4C illustrate a preferred method of peeling a piece of vegetable 60 and/or a piece of fruit 60 by means of an assembly 2 comprising a 15 peeler 4 and a pricker 6. Figure 4A illustrates releasing the pricker 6 from the cavity 20 that is provided in the body 8 of the peeler 4 and illustrates pricking the pricker 6 into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit 60. Figure 4B illustrates peeling. Figure 4C illustrates taking eyes out of potatoes. The peeler 4 of figures 4A-4C may be the peeler 4 shown in figures 1A-3B or may 20 be another peeler 4. The pricker 6 of figures 4A-C may be the pricker 6 of figures 1A-3B or may be another pricker 6. Thus, the assembly 2 according to the first embodiment may be used for carrying out the preferred method. Alternatively, another assembly 2, which may or may not be an assembly 2 according to the invention, is used for carrying out the preferred method.
25 The peeler 4 may comprise the body 8 and comprising the knife 10 for peeling the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit 60. The knife 10 may be mounted, preferably rotatably around the longitudinal axis 11 of the knife 10, to the body 8. The preferred method comprises holding, during peeling, the peeler handle 12 of the peeler 4. The peeler handle 12 is formed by at least a 30 part of the body 8. The preferred method further comprises pricking the 14 pricker 6 into the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit 60. Such pricking is schematically indicated by an arrow 62 indicated in figure 4A. The preferred method may further comprise holding the piece of vegetable and/or the piece of fruit 60 by means of the pricker 6 during peeling.
5 More in general, peeling may comprise moving the peeler 4 in a direction of movement of the peeler 4 during peeling that is directed away from the user. Said direction is indicated by arrow 64 in figure 4B. Peeling in said direction may be more safe for the user. Peeling in said direction 64 may be enabled in a relatively reliable way by the pricker 6 of the first embodiment of 10 the assembly 2, in particular by one or two or more blade notches 48 of the pricker 6 and/or by the neck portion 49 of the blade 42 and/or by dimensions of the blade 42 of the pricker 6, as described with reference to figures 3A and 3B.
The preferred method may further comprise releasing the pricker 6 from the cavity 20 that is provided in the body 8. Such releasing is indicated by 15 means of an arrow 66 indicated in figure 4A. The preferred method may further comprise, e.g. after peeling, fixing to pricker 6 in the cavity 20 that is provided in the body 8.
