With the stem assembly in accordance with the present invention, the following advantages can be achieved.
1. After unlocking the clamping device to release the 25 clamping effect provided by the clamping device and applied to clamping segment, the grip mount can be rotated relative to the connecting tube. Thus, the grip of the bicycle can be rotated to a position where is substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the bicycle. Accordingly, the volume of 30 the bicycle can be reduced even minimized to make the bicycle being easily and conveniently stored and transported.
2. With the arrangement of the limiting device, the 5 grip mount is held firmly at the expanded or folded position relative to and kept from rotating from the connecting tube.
3. With the 90° curvature of the guiding slot, an angle limiting effect is provided to the grip mount and the grip 5 mount can be rotated quickly and precisely to an expanded or folded position.
4. With the force provided by the spring mounted between the connecting tube and the grip mount, the positioning pin can enter automatically into one of the 10 positioning cavities after the grip mount is rotated a desired angle relative to the connecting tube. Thus, an automatically positioning effect is provided.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to Figs. 1 to 3, a steam assembly for a 15 bicycle in accordance with the present invention comprises a connecting tube (10), a grip mount (20), a clamping device (30), a limiting device and a spring (50). The connecting tube (10) is adapted to be inserted into a front fork of the bicycle with fasteners, such as bolts. The connecting tube 20 (10) has a guiding slot (12). The guiding slot (12) is curved, is defined laterally near the top of the connecting tube (10) and has a curvature of 90° and two positioning cavities (122) . The positioning cavities (122) are defined respectively in two ends of the guiding slot (12).
25 The grip mount (20) is mounted on the top of the connecting tube (10) and comprises a clamping segment (22) and a grip mounting segment (24). The clamping segment (22) is mounted and clamps on the top of the connecting tube (10), is C-shaped in cross section and has two sides and two 30 through holes (224). With the C-shaped cross section, the clamping segment (22) has an opening (222) defined along the clamping segment (22). The through holes (224) are defined respectively through the sides and align with each other.
6
The grip mount (20) further has a positioning pin (23) mounted on the clamping segment (22) and mounted slidably in the guiding slot (12). The grip mounting segment (24) is mounted or formed integrally on the top of and perpendicular 5 to the clamping segment (22) and is adapted for holding a grip (70) of the bicycle. The grip mounting segment (24) has a C-shaped cross section to define an opening. A screw (242) is mounted on the grip mounting segment (24) through the opening to narrow the opening and to securely hold the grip 10 (70) on the grip mounting segment (24).
With further reference to Figs. 4 and 5, the clamping device (30) is mounted on the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) and comprises a pivotal bolt (32), two clamping blocks (34), two caps (36) and a lever (40). The 15 pivotal bolt (32) is mounted through the through holes (224) in the clamping segment (22) and has an engaging segment (322) and two threads (324). The engaging segment (322) is formed on a middle of the pivotal bolt (32) and has a noncircular cross section. The threads (324) are formed on the 20 pivotal bolt (32) respectively on two sides of the engaging segment (322) and each has a spiral direction opposite to each other. The clamping blocks (34) are screwed respectively on the threads (324) on the pivotal bolt (32) and abut respectively against the sides of the clamping 25 segment (22). Each clamping block (34) comprises a body (342), a threaded hole (343) and an abutting flange (344). The body (342) is mounted in a corresponding one of the through holes (224) in the clamping segment (22) and has a circular cross section. The threaded hole (343) is defined 30 in the body (342) and is screwed with a corresponding one of the threads (324) on the pivotal bolt (32). The abutting flange (344) is formed around one end of the body (342) and abuts against a corresponding one of the sides of the 7 clamping segment (22). In addition, the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) further has a securing bolt (25) mounted on one of the sides of the clamping segment (22), extending into the through hole (224) in the side and 5 abutting against a corresponding clamping block (34). With the arrangement of the securing bolt (25), the corresponding clamping block (34) can be securely held and kept from rotating and moving relative to the corresponding through hole (224) . The caps (36) are mounted respectively on the 10 sides of the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) to cover the through holes (224) and the clamping blocks (34).
The lever (40) is mounted securely around the engaging segment (322) of the pivotal bolt (32) to drive the pivotal bolt (32) rotating to the grip mount (20) and is held in and 15 closes the opening (222) in the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) . The lever (40) has a non-circular hole (402) defined in the lever (40) and mounted securely around the engaging segment (322) of the pivotal bolt (32). With the engagement between the non-circular hole (402) and the 20 engaging segment (322), the pivotal bolt (32) can be rotated with the lever (40) and the lever (40) is connected pivotally to the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) with the pivotal bolt (32). The lever (40) may be plastic and further has an engaging block (42) embedded in 25 the lever (40). The engaging block (42) is metal and has a non-circular hole (422) defined through the engaging block (42) and mounted securely around the engaging segment (322) of the pivotal bolt (32). With the metal engaging block (42), the combination strength between the lever (40) and 30 the pivotal bolt (32) is enhanced.
A holding block (44) is mounted pivotally on the top of the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) with a pivot and engages the lever (40). The holding block (44) has 8 a hook (442) formed on the holding block (44) at an end opposite to the pivot. The lever (40) further has a hook hole (406) defined in a top of the lever (40) and engaging the hook (442) on the holding block (44). With the 5 engagement between the hook (442) and the hook hole (406), the lever (40) can be kept at a position where closing the opening (222) of the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount (20) by the holding block. Thus, the outer surface and appearance of the clamping segment (22) are smooth. A 10 torsion spring (46) is mounted around the pivot and has two ends abutting respectively with the clamping segment (22) and the holding block (44). Accordingly, the holding block (44) can be pushed outward relative to the clamping segment (22) with the force provided by the torsion spring (46).
15 The limiting device is mounted between the clamping device (30) and the connecting tube (10) to keep the grip mount (20) from rotating relative to the connecting tube (10) when the clamping device (30) is in a locked condition. The limiting device comprises an engaging hole (14) and a 20 protrusion. The engaging hole (14) is defined near the top of the connecting hole (10). The protrusion (404) protrudes from the lever (40) and selectively engaging the engaging hole (14) in the connecting tube (10). In a preferred embodiment, the protrusion (404) is formed on the engaging 25 block (42) and extends out from the lever (40).
The spring (50) is mounted between the connecting tube (10) and the grip mount (20) and has two ends abutting respectively with the top of the connecting tube (10) and an inner surface of the clamping segment (22) of the grip mount 30 (20). The spring (50) can provide a force to push the grip mount (20) upward to make the positioning pin (23) being held in one of the positioning cavities (122) in the connecting tube (10) automatically.
9
When the lever (40) engages the holding block (44) and is held at the position where closing the opening (222) of the clamping segment (22), the clamping blocks (34) will abut against the sides of the clamping segment (22) to 5 narrow the opening (222) of the claming segment (22).
Accordingly, the connecting tube (10) is securely clamped by the clamping segment (22), and the grip mount (20) can be positioned relative to the connecting tube (10) at a specific position, such as an expanded and riding condition 10 of the bicycle. At the expanded position, the grip (70) of the bicycle is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bicycle to allow the rider to control the bicycle.
To fold the bicycle, with reference to Figs. 4 to 7, 15 the holding block (44) is pushed to disengage the hook (442) from the hook hole (406) in the lever (40) and the lever (40) can be pivoted relative to the clamping segment (22). When the lever (40) is pivoted, the pivotal bolt (32) can be rotated relative to the grip mount (20) due to the 20 engagement between the engaging segment (322) and the noncircular holes (402,422). Because one of the clamping blocks (34) are fixed securely by the securing bolt (25), the pivotal bolt (32) can be moved relative to the fixed clamping block (34) to make the other clamping block (34) 25 away from the fixed clamping block (34). Consequently, the opening (222) of the clamping segment (20) can be released to make the grip mount (20) rotatable relative to the connecting tube (10). Accordingly, the grip mount (20) can be rotated relative to the connecting tube (10) 90° to a 30 position where the grip (70) is substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the bicycle as shown in Fig. 8. Thus, the bicycle can be folded to a reduced even a minimized volume to make the bicycle being easily and 10 conveniently stored and transported.
When the lever (40) is pivoted in reverse to make the lever (40) closing the opening (222) of the clamping segment (22), the clamping block (34) can be moved closely to the 5 fixed clamping block (34) along the thread (324) on the pivotal bolt (32) to clamp against the sides of the clamping segment (22). Accordingly, the grip mount (20) can be held securely relative to the connecting tube (10) at a position where the bicycle is folded.
10 When the lever (40) is at the position where closing the opening (222) of the clamping segment (22) , the protrusion (404) on the lever (40) will enter and engage the engaging hole (14) in the connecting tube (10). Accordingly, the grip mount (20) can be held at the expanded or folded 15 position relative to and kept from rotating from the connecting tube (10).
During the grip mount (20) is rotated relative to the connecting tube, the positioning pin (23) will slide along the guiding slot (12). With the 90° curvature of the guiding 20 slot (12), the grip mount (20) can be rotated quickly and precisely to a desired position, such as an expanded or folded position. Furthermore, with the force provided by the spring (50) to lift the grip mount (20) upwardly, the positioning pin (23) can enter automatically into one of the 25 positioning cavities (122) after the grip mount (20) is rotated 90° relative to the connecting tube (10). Thus, an automatically positioning effect is provided.
