Description

Embedding humans and objects in virtual reality environments.
The recent understanding, definition and implementation of virtual reality does not imply presence of humans there within.
5 The broadly used definition sounds as: "A virtual world is a computer-based simulated environment intended for its users to inhabit and interact via avatars."
Thus, a general consensus nowadays is that in virtual environments you have to use a virtual representation of a person, 10 i.e. an avatar.
This patent is about embedding of human beings and any other existing physical objects in three-dimensional digital virtual environment. The need for this system is motivated in general by the current implicit divide between our physical world and virtual 15 reality worlds, and in particular by great inconvenience imposed by moving around a doll-like avatar in virtual space.
The system allowing embedding humans and objects in virtual reality environments underlying this patent request is described as follows (here both humans and other physical objects are being 20 called "object"):
Multiple videocameras take images of the object from different viewpoints around the object. All these images are processed by a software program to reconstruct a digital three-dimensional image of the object. Consequently this three-dimensional image is in 25 real time projected into a chosen virtual reality environment (or more than one environment at a time), thus providing realistic presence and spatial interaction within the virtual reality environment (s) .
The (parts of the) image of a human can be modified at will for 30 the purposes of privacy for example, or otherwise for entertainment or educational purposes. This will however not change the essence of the system - the human will remain in control of his/her image.
This system will combine the advantages of teleconferencing 35 with virtual reality technology. While teleconferencing allows only to see an image of a persons on a two-dimensional flat screen, and the virtual environment technology allows spatial interaction but only with a non-real avatar, meaning that very 2 important parts of the real communication - facial and gestural parts - are being missed when communicating through an avatar.
Added with voice communication, such system can fulfill the needs of realistic interaction between people divided by distance, 5 and in many cases will substitute other means of communication, while enriching human interaction with possibilities provided by the virtual reality technology.
Thus with this system people themselves will be able to inhabit virtual environments and act therein as they do now in real life, 10 and even more.
