Description
Packing and instruction leaflet for a medicine or medicament
The invention relates to a packing for a medicine or medicament selected from the group comprising a capsule, a carton, a container or similar device provided with at least one direction for using the medicine or medicament.
5 The invention also relates to an instruction leaflet for such a medicine or medicament that is provided with at least one direction of using the medicine or medicament.
The said packing and instruction leaflet are known from the prior art, and the public at large is familiar with such a 10 packing and instruction leaflet. The concerning directions of using the medicine or medicament are provided in the language of the country where the medicine or medicament is put on the market. This poses immediately apparent problems when the user of the medicine or medicament is not able to understand said direc-15 tions of use. This may for instance happen when the user is too young to be able to read, or when the user is illiterate. The fact that this is a serious problem throughout the world may be clear when one realizes that the world population comprises approximately 880,000,000 illiterates.
20 The problem is also eminent for people on a business- trip or enjoying holidays abroad in a country having a language which is not understood.
The invention is concerned with addressing such problems and relieving them to the greatest possible extent. To that 25 end according to the invention a packing and an instruction leaflet for a medicine or medicament, are proposed in accordance with one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the packing for a medicine or medicament has the feature that said at least one 30 direction for using the medicine or medicament is an outwardly provided pictogram. By properly selecting the pictogram it becomes possible for the user to immediately recognize and understand the intended way of using the medicine or medicament.
Usually it is preferable that the packing has a series 35 of pictograms, wherein each single pictogram of said series relates to a preselected direction of use that can be distinguished from the remaining directions of use pertaining to the medicine or medicament. In this way a rather complicated collection of directions for using the medicine or medicament can be 2 provided on the packing without losing understandability.
It is preferred that when the packing of a particular medicine or medicament comprises not only a capsule, or not only a carton, or not only a container, but also any of the other 5 means of packing, that all the applied means of packing are provided with the same applicable pictogram or pictograms. This secures that the applicable directions of use remain available, also when a particular part of the original packing has gone astray.
10 As mentioned above the invention relates also to an in struction leaflet for a medicine or medicament that is provided with at least one direction of use of the medicine or medicament, and that is provided with the feature that said at. least one direction for using the medicine or medicament is a picto- 15 gram. Preferably also the instruction leaflet comprises a series of pictograms, wherein each single pictogram of said series relates to a preselected direction of use that can be distinguished from the remaining directions of use provided to the leaflet and pertaining to the medicine or medicament.
20 The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing showing typical examples of a packing and leaflet according to the prior art and according to the invention respectively. It is expressly pointed out that these examples are only intended to illustrate the invention, 25 and that the appended claims are not restricted to these examples .
In the drawing: - figure 1A and figure IB show a carton for a painkiller in accordance with the prior art and in accordance with 30 the invention respectively; - figure 2A and figure 2B show a carton for an ointment for treatment of hemorrhages in accordance with the prior art and in accordance with the invention respectively; - figure 3A and figure 3B show capsules for a pain- 35 killer in accordance with the prior art; - figure 4 shows a capsule for a painkiller in accordance with invention - figure 5 shows a container for an ointment for treatment of hemorrhages in accordance with the invention; and 40 - figure 6 shows some instruction leaflets in accor dance with the invention.
3
Wherever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied these numerals refer to the same parts.
Figure 1A shows a carton 1 for a painkiller in accordance with the prior art which is having directions of using the 5 painkiller provided at the outward side of the carton. These directions of using the painkiller are indicated with reference numeral 2. It will be clear for the artisan that the directions of use will not at all times be clear for a user in terms of what the instructions pertain to in relation to the use of the 10 medicine or medicament. This will particularly apply with young children or with illiterates, or when the instructions are in a foreign language that the user doesn't master.
Figure IB shows a carton 1 for a painkiller in accordance with the invention, which is similar to the carton shown 15 in figure 1A, but which is provided with pictograms 3 in order to clarify the intended way of using the medicine or medicament. The applied pictograms are pictogram 3.3 for indicating that the medicine should not be used when one is suffering a heart condition, pictogram 3.1 for showing that the medicine should be dis-20 solved in water, pictogram 3.2 for indicating that the medicine should be taken orally, and pictogram 3.4 for indicating that the medicine should not be taken when one is contemplating to drive a car or in general to participate in traffic.
Figure 2A shows a carton 1 serving as the packing mate-25 rial for an ointment for the treatment of hemorrhages. Directions of using the ointment are provided at the side of the carton 1 indicated with reference numeral 2.
Figure 2B a similar carton 1 that in addition to the directions of use that are provided on the side 2 of the carton 30 1, is provided with a series of directions of use in the form of pictograms 3. The used pictograms are respectively pictogram 3.1 for showing that he medicament should be taken anally, pictogram 3.2 to show that afterwards one has to wash hands, and pictograms 3.3 and 3.4 showing that the medicament should not be used 35 when one is suffering a heart condition and should not be used by pregnant women.
Figure 3A and figure 3B capsules 4 for a painkiller in accordance with the prior art. The capsules shown in figure 3A carry the name of the medicine, whereas the capsules shown in 40 figure 3E are blanc.
Figure 4 shows the capsule 4 of the invention having a 4 series of pictograms 3 to indicate the directions of use of the concerning painkiller. It concerns an indication to take the medicine anally (pictogram 3.5), an indication to wash hands afterwards (pictogram 3.6), an indication that the medicine should 5 not be used by pregnant women (pictogram 3.7), an indication that the medicine is not to be used when one is suffering a heart condition (pictogram 3.8), and an indication that the medicine is not to be used by small children (pictogram 3.9).
The artisan will recognize that a major advantage of the inven- 10 tion is that The capsule itself is provided with the pictograms, meaning that all directions of use are present when one is actually at the point when the medicine is to be applied. This avoids cumbersome searching for the instruction leaflet at the time when it is needed the most, and which most commonly also is 15 the point in time when the instruction leaflet proves to be hard to find.
As a further example of the invention figure 5 shows the container 5 for the ointment for the treatment of hemorrhages in accordance with what is shown in figure 2A and figure 20 2B. Figure 5 shows that container 5 is also provided with suit able pictograms 3 in accordance with the invention.
Figure 6 finally shows some instruction leaflets 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 in accordance with the invention, wherein each instruction leaflet is provided with suitable pictograms 3 for 25 providing directions to use the medicine or medicament to which the leaflet belongs. The benefit of the invention is immediately apparent from the instruction leaflets 6.2 and 6.3 wherein apart from the instructions in a language commonly not accessible for English speaking people, the instructions are also understand-30 able from the pictograms 3 that are provided on the instruction leaflets.
