Abstract
The use of sandwich panels consisting of sheets of 1) a flexible elastomeric material such as for example EPOM, combined with 2) a more rigid plate material such as aluminum, or fibreglass-reinforced polyester. or another fibre-reinforced polymer, or polyproplylene or another thermoplastic polymer, to construct a foldable boathull. The elastomeric sheet material can be on both si des of the rigid plate material (FIG. 1A and 1D) or on one side (FIG. 1B, 1C, 1E and 1F). A tolding boat typically consistsof 4 (FIG. 1A, 1B and 1C), or 5 (FIG. 1D, 1E and 1F) or more panels of specific shape. The angles between rigid plates can be achieved by leaving a gap (FIG. 1G) or mounting them in a specific angle, using a mold (FIG. 1H). This invention enables the production of a foldable boathull in one piece, which is safe as well as rigid and waterproof.
Description
The use of sandwich panels, consisting of a flexible sheet material and a rigid plate material, to produce a foldable boathull.
This invention relates to foldable boats and more specific to a method of producing a foldable boathull.
Foldable boats have a long history, with patent applications going back to the 19th century. Despite this long history, foldable boats are still perceived by most people as less safe and less stable than ordinary small boats. Hence a method is needed to produce safe, waterproof and rigid foldable boats. This patent discloses such a method.
In the construction of trailers, caravans and campers sandwich plates are in wide use. They usually consist of two outer layers of a very thin but strong plate material and a thick light weight filler plate. The combination of the two materials gives the preferred characteristics to the end result.
In the case of foldable boats it would be ideal to combine the foldability of an inflatable boat and the rigidity of a conventional fibreglass-reinforced polyester boat or a metal boat.
In the present invention a sandwich was developed consisting of the flexible elastomeric material EPDM and fibreglass-reinforced polyester plate, and applied to produce safe, waterproof and rigid foldable boathulls. The elastomeric sheet material can be on both sides of the rigid plate material (FIG. 1A and ID) or on one side (FIG. IB, 1C, IE and IF). A folding boat typically consists of 4 (FIG. IA, IB and 1C), or 5 (FIG. ID, IE and IF) or more panels of specific shape.
Depending on the desired angle in which the sandwich has to bend, the rigid plates are mounted in between or on top of the flexible elastomeric sheets leaving a 0-15mm gap (FIG. 1G). Another possibility is to mount the rigid plates in beteen the flexible elastomeric sheets in the desired angle using a mold (FIG. 1H).
