Description
A band for packaging products, a method for manufacturing a band, and a method for packaging products
The present invention relates to a band for recloseably packaging 5 products, said band comprising sealable material and having - a recloseable seal comprising adhesive; - a first side and a second side, the first side of the band being arranged so as to allow sealing using a technique chosen from thermal sealing and ultrasonic sealing; and 10 - two longitudinal edges; the band being in the form of a roll having a first end relatively far away from the centerline of the roll and a second end relatively close to the centerline of the roll.
In the art it is known to package products, such as stacks of 15 slices of meat or cheese, in recloseable packages. A user can open the package, remove the amount of product needed, and close the package again so as to improve storage of the remaining product. Usually, products such as slices of meat or cheese are packaged at a central location, and subsequently shipped to stores where the packaged 20 products are sold. Packaging is done by a packaging machine at high speed and high volume.
A band according to the preamble is known from W098/18678. The band is composed of two sheets with overlapping longitudinal edges, joined with adhesive which runs in the longitudinal direction of the 25 band so as to provide a recloseable seal. The adhesive is at a distance of one of the longitudinal edges, leaving a flap (tab) free of adhesive. This flap can be used by the user to open the package and get access to the packaged product. A product is packaged by partially unwinding the roll, creating longitudinally extending folds in the 30 band, and sealing the first and second sheet together at the first side of the band. Also, two transversal end seals are made, thus sealing the product air-tight.
The band of W098/18678 may be used for high speed and high volume automatic packaging, which is done for standardised amounts and/or 35 specific products. However, in a store a customer may desire a certain product or a certain amount not available in an automatically packaged form. In that case, the product will be packaged in the store. The band of W098/18678 is not suitable because in stores use is often made of an 2 alternative packaging method. Instead of creating longitudinal folds, the alternative method makes use of a transversal fold and for sealing the product two longitudinal seals and one transversal seal are made.
The object of the present invention is to provide a band suitable 5 for recloseably packaging products using a transversal fold method.
To this end, a band according to the preamble is characterized in that the band comprises a plurality of sheet sections arranged in the longitudinal direction of the band, the sheet sections having a leading first end and a trailing second end, the trailing second end of a first 10 sheet section being adjacent to the leading first end of a second sheet section in a transition zone, the second side of the band at the transition zone being provided with a transversely extending piece of tape comprising Pressure Sensitive Adhesive material, the surface area of adhesive covering one of the first sheet section and the second 15 sheet section at a transition zone is at least five times the surface area of adhesive covering the other one of the first sheet section and the second sheet section at said transition zone, wherein the tape comprises a transversely extending flap, said flap overlapping the sheet section that has the smaller surface area being covered with 20 adhesive at said transition zone, wherein the first sheet section and the second sheet section are separated over the full width of the band by a cut chosen from i) a row of perforations, and ii) by a through-cut.
Thus a band is provided suitable for packaging products involving 25 a step of creating a transversal fold to envelope the product by the band before sealing. The row of perforations allows the package to be closed in a manner that can be distinguished from an opened and reclosed package. The through-cut allows a package made using the band of this embodiment to be more reliably opened and with less force, 30 reducing the risk of tearing of the package in an undesirable manner, at the joint afforded by the tape.
According to a favourable embodiment, at said transition zone, the average width of the adhesive of the tape in contact with the sheet section that is the least covered with adhesive is at least 1 mm and 35 preferably less than 5 mm.
The width of the adhesive is in the longitudinal direction of the band. Such a width allows for easy opening and closing by the user as well as secure closing during storage.
3
The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a band for recloseably packaging products, characterized in that an elongated sheet having - a first side and a second side, the first side of the elongated sheet 5 being arranged so as to allow sealing using a technique chosen from thermal sealing and ultrasonic sealing; and - two longitudinal edges; is used, wherein the method of manufacturing involves repeating the following 10 steps: the elongated sheet is provided at the second side of the elongated sheet with a piece of tape in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the elongated sheet, said piece of tape comprising in the longitudinal direction of the piece of tape a first 15 zone comprising adhesive and a second zone free of adhesive, wherein after application of the piece of tape at the location of the adhesive a transition zone is created by providing the elongated sheet at the first side with a cut so as to form a trailing second end of a first sheet section and a leading first end of a second sheet section 20 adjacent to the first sheet section, where the surface area of adhesive covering one of the first sheet section and the second sheet section at said transition zone is at least five times the surface area of adhesive covering the other one of the first sheet section and the second sheet section at said transition zone, and said second zone of 25 the tape overlapping the sheet section that has the smaller surface area being covered with adhesive at said transition zone, wherein the first sheet section and the second sheet section are separated over the full width of the band by the cut, and the cut is chosen from i) a row of perforations, and ii) by a through-cut.
30 This method provides a convenient way to produce a cost-effective band according to the invention. The cut may be a row of perforations. The band thus formed will be rolled up, generally on a spindle.
According to a favourable embodiment, the cut is made using a punch comprising a knife having an effective height of less than the 35 combined thickness of the elongated sheet of band and the adhesive of the piece of tape.
The cut may be, as desired, a row of perforations, a cut-in wherein the band is cut over the entire width but not the entire 4 thickness of the band, or a through-cut over the entire width of the elongated sheet of the band. This embodiment is very favourable. Slight variations in thickness of the band are of little or no consequence and still result in a band for recloseably packaging products that can be 5 use for reliably packaging products. The effective height is determined by a stop, which may be the base of a punch from which the knife protrudes, or determined by stops cooperating with stops at opposite sides of the knife, the stops co-operating to limit the penetration depth of the knife.
10 Finally, the present invention relates to a method of packaging a product, wherein the product is enveloped by a band comprising sealable material having - a recloseable seal comprising adhesive; - a first side and a second side, the first side of the band being 15 arranged so as to allow sealing using a technique chosen from thermal sealing and ultrasonic sealing; and - two longitudinal edges; the band being in the form of a roll having a first end relatively far away from the centerline of the roll and a second end relatively close 20 to the centerline of the roll, wherein the band is a band according to any of the claims 1 and 2, and the method comprises the steps of - placing a product to be packaged on the first side of the band, the product being placed at a distance from the firste end of said band; - folding the first end of said band over the product to be packaged, 25 followed in no particular order by - sealing longitudinal edges at overlapping longitudinal edges of the band of sealable material by contacting areas of the first side at opposite longitudinal edges, and - creating a further seal transverse to the longitudinal direction with 30 the recloseable seal comprising adhesive between the transverse fold and the transverse seal.
Thus a transverse method of packaging products, the package having a recloseable seal is provided. Usually, the longitudinal and transversal seals will be made simultaneously. The first end is the 35 leading first end of the most distal sheet section of the band.
The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the drawing where
Fig. 1 shows a side view of a roll of band according to the 5 invention;
Fig. 2 shows a detail of the roll of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a cross-sectional view through a package; and
Fig. 4 shows a top view of the package of Fig. 2.
5 Fig. 1 schematically depicts a roll 100 comprising a band 101 having a first end 111 and a second end 112. The first end 111 is the free (and leading) end of the band 101. The second end 112 is in contact with a spindle 113.
The band 101 comprises an elongated sheet 130. The elongated sheet 10 130 shown in Fig. 1 is composed of a first sheet section 131 and a second sheet section 132. In practice, a roll 100 will have many sheet sections, such as 100-2000.
Fig. 2 shows a detail of Fig. 1. In particular it shows that the first sheet section 131 and the second sheet section 132 are separated 15 by a through-cut 201 that extends over the width of the elongated sheet 130 .
The band 101 has a first side 251 and a second side 252. At least the first side 251 of the band 101 comprises material that can be sealed using a technique chosen from thermal sealing and ultrasonic 20 sealing. Such material is generally known in the art. By way of example a suitable sheet material known in the art is a sandwich of three layers. The first layer at the first side 251 is made of the heat-sealable material cast polypropylene (CPP) with a thickness of 25 micrometers. At the second side 252 there is an air-impermeable layer 25 of polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) with a thickness of 12 micrometers. The two layers are bonded via an intermediate layer of polyvinyl alcohol with a thickness of 1 urn.
The first sheet section 131 and the second sheet section 132 are held together by a piece of tape 202 at the second side 252 of the band 30 101 that extends over the width of the elongated sheet 130. The piece of tape 202 comprises a Pressure Sensitive Adhesive 203 and a base 204, part of the base 204 being free of adhesive 203 so as to form a tab 205 .
Fig. 2 also indicates how the band 101 is made using a punch press 35 having a knife 210. The band 101 is provided with the piece of tape 202 and passed between a support surface 211 and the punch press with knife 210. To prevent the knife 210 from penetrating through base 204 of the piece of tape 202, the knife 210 may protrude over the desired distance 6 from a body 214 to provide a contact surface 213 that prevents the knife 210 from penetrating too far. In addition or alternatively, the knife 210 may be provided with stops (not shown) extending farther from the punch press than the knife 210, said stops being outside the band 5 101, which stops will hit the support surface 211 before the knife 210 could do that.
The knife 210 results in the elongated sheet 130 being cut, resulting in the first sheet section 131 having a trailing second end 222 and the second sheet section 132 having a leading end 222 at a 10 transition zone 223.
The surface area of adhesive 203 covering the first sheet section 131 at said transition zone 223 is one-fifth of the surface area of adhesive 203 covering the second sheet section 132 at said transition zone 223, with the tab 205 extending over the first sheet section 131. 15 The piece of tape 202 may conveniently have been applied to the elongated sheet 130 using a sticker applicator, as is known in the art. Pieces of tape 202 will be provided on a roll, with the adhesive 203 attached to a release liner.
Fig. 3 shows a cross-sectional view through a package 300 20 comprising a product 301 which is for example a tray with slices of meat.
To package product 301, it is placed on top of the band 101 shown in Fig. 1, more specifically on the first side 251 at the location of the transition zone 223. A transverse fold 302 is made by folding the 25 first end 111 of the band 101, i.e. the leading end of the first sheet section 131 over the product 301 such that it extends beyond said product 301. There a transverse seal 310 will be created by applying heat.
The joint provided by the piece of tape 202 forms a recloseable 30 seal 320. A user can open the package 300 by pulling the tab 205 and close it again. The limited surface area of adhesive 203 at the trailing second end 222 helps to ensure that the piece of tape 202 remains stuck to the package 300.
Usually at the same time as the transverse seal 310 is formed, 35 longitudinal seals 401 at longitudinal edges 402 of the band 101 will be made, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus the product 301 is completely wrapped, forming package 300. To form the seals at the same time, the packaging machine (not shown) employed will have a customary U-shaped 7 heating element. To ensure proper packaging, the packaging machine may have a detector for detecting the transition zone 223. Packaging machines capable of doing that are known in the art, where a sensor such as an optical sensor is used to detect a printed marker. If 5 necessary, the band 101 may have a printed marker, in which case it is preferably the piece of tape 202 that is provided with the printed marker.
