In de praktijk is het - voornamelijk in derdewereld-landen - vaak een probleem of zelfs onmogelijk om het daar aanwezige water te zuiveren van bacteriën en micro-organismen omdat aldaar de nodige voorzieningen zoals bijvoorbeeld elektriciteit ontbreken. Met deze eenvoudige installatie is dat wel mogelijk omdat deze behalve zonlicht geen 10 elektriciteit of andere vormen van energie nodig heeft om te functioneren en bovendien geen schadelijke (broeikas)gassen uitstoot. Ooor bij een eventueel gebrek aan zonlicht via een zonnecel de watertoevoer af te sluiten wordt voorkomen dat vervuild water bij afwezigheid van de noodzakelijk infrarood-straling de installatie kan passeren zonder gezuiverd te worden.In practice, it is often a problem - or even impossible - to purify the water present there from bacteria and micro-organisms - mainly in third-world countries - because the necessary facilities such as electricity are lacking there.
