Abstract
Description
Improved method and device for determining the use of a leg orthosis or prosthesis.
The present invention relates to aids for people with disabilities on one or more limbs. The invention consists of a leg orthosis or a prosthetic leg provided with a device which measures and displays the load on the device. A leg orthosis is an aid to support a leg with a reduced functionality, for example applicable to a paralyzed leg. A leg prosthesis is an aid to replace parts of a leg, for example after amputation of that part. Below the term "provision" is to be read as referring to either a leg prosthesis or a leg orthosis.
In general, a provision is subject to wear due to its use. As a result, maintenance, repair and replacement of the facility is necessary. Proper maintenance of the facility largely prevents a repair or replacement of the facility. Due to adequate maintenance, a large saving in costs can be achieved and the time when a facility cannot be used can be shortened to a large extent. In current practice, different maintenance methods are applied such as, periodic inspection and maintenance, for example, every year or an emergency repair if the facility no longer functions, or a periodic replacement of the facility, for example every two years. The major disadvantage of a periodic check or replacement is that this is not indicated by the actual use of the facility. As a result, the chosen period can be too long for intensive use, which increases the chance of necessary repairs. Also, if the facility is not used intensively, the chosen period may be too short, which means that maintenance is not yet necessary or that a facility is replaced while this is not yet necessary.
A first method according to the invention relates to determining the extent of the use of a leg orthosis or prosthesis by counting the steps taken with said provision.
A second method according to the invention relates to determining the degree of use of a leg orthosis or prosthesis by measuring the extent to which the provision is loaded.
A third method according to the invention relates to a maintenance schedule for a prosthesis or orthosis, wherein the moment of checking and maintenance of that provision is partly based on one or both of the aforementioned first and second method.
Proper use of a prosthesis or orthosis is of great importance for the operation of the device and for the safety of the patient. It is often difficult for the patient to learn this desired method and to continue applying it because the patient often does not feel when the device is being used correctly or incorrectly.
A fourth method according to the invention relates to the warning, for example by means of an acoustic or vibrating signal, of the user of a prosthesis or orthosis on the basis of the load on the device. Such a warning system is known from the automotive sector but is not yet applied in the provision of orthosis and prostheses. With this method, a user can be trained to use the facility correctly. This method can also be used to alert the user to unsafe and dangerous situations.

The correct and safe functioning of a prosthesis or orthosis is strongly determined by the anatomy, need for assistance and possibilities of the patient and by the correct manner in which the provision provides support. The manner in which the device is attached to the body largely determines the operation and safety of the device. In the initial phase in which the patient is given the facility, the person who does so will ask the patient to use the facility so that he can determine whether the facility is satisfactory or whether something needs to be changed. The person who measures the facility generally does this by looking at the patient. A disadvantage of this method is that not all details of the use of the facility are clearly visible and that in general the daily use of the facility is not included, so that there is a chance that the facility is not properly fitted or is unsafe.
A fifth method according to the invention relates to measuring use data of a prosthesis or orthosis during use, storing this data and making this data available and analyzing and using this data and analysis when fitting the device.
A first device according to the invention relates to a leg prosthesis or leg orthosis which is provided with a step counter and whose number of steps can be read.
A second device according to the invention relates to a leg prosthesis or leg orthosis which is provided with a device that measures the load on the device, preferably comprising at least one strain gauge and preferably integrated into the device. The device according to the invention is also preferably provided with a memory in which the measured values are stored and also preferably with a device that analyzes the measured values and also preferably with a device that presents the measured and analyzed values to a remote device connected or not wirelessly connected to the device. The facility is also preferably provided with a device with which the user of the facility is alerted, for example by an audible acoustic signal or a noticeable vibration signal or a visible light signal.

If a provision provided with the said second device is used in the home situation, the current supply is insufficient with the current state of the art, for example in the case of battery supply 40 because it has to be recharged frequently in order to measure data from each step for 4 longer periods and save. The proposed solution for this is that the data of every step is not saved but with an interval, for example, after every hundred steps.
A sixth method according to the invention relates to the measurement of use data of a prosthesis or orthosis during use, the storage of this data and the provision and analysis of this data and the use of this data and analysis when measuring the facility.
