Description
The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a transition blank comprising a first part of a first metal and a second part of a second metal connected thereto. Such a transition blank is known from European patent application EP 0 745 449. A transition blank is a form of a tailor-made blank (TMB), which is understood to mean a blank built up of different materials and / or different material thicknesses with the aim of the correct mechanical properties in the right place in the finished product. TMBs are widely used in the automotive industry. In a transition blank, the two parts are made of two different materials, for example a first part of aluminum or an aluminum alloy and the second part of steel, such as a high-strength steel or a deformation steel. The transition blank is then, for example, used to have a transition part, directly or with the product produced therefrom, between steel parts and aluminum parts of a means of transport. EP 0 745 449 describes a method for producing a transition blank in which the two parts are placed with their sides in a contact surface against each other, after which the first part is heated by means of a laser at a selected distance from the contact surface. The introduced heat spreads in the direction of the contact face and melts the second part, which has a lower melting temperature than the first part. By exerting a force directed in the direction of the contact surface on both parts, both parts are connected to each other. A drawback of this method is that the two metal parts are in electrical contact with each other. The disadvantage of a transition blank of steel and aluminum is that the aluminum part, and any aluminum parts connected thereto during use, are attacked by galvanic corrosion.
The known method further has the drawback that it is not well suited for manufacturing transition blankets of large dimensions, for instance larger than 0.5 x 0.5 m, because the equipment required for this then becomes too large and too complicated.
1010118 -2-1010118 -2-
Another drawback of the known method is that expensive and specialist equipment is required for its implementation. Another drawback is that the contact surfaces must be machined very precisely to obtain a sufficiently low heat resistance.
A further drawback is that the method is laborious and therefore time-consuming, so that only few transition blanks can be produced per unit time.
The object of the invention is to provide a method with which these drawbacks occur are at least greatly reduced and with which other advantages are also attainable. For this purpose, the method according to the invention is characterized in that the first and second parts overlap at least partially with an overlap area and the first and second parts are joined together at the location of the overlap area by means of at least an adhesive layer.
This achieves the advantage of an easy-to-make connection that can be applied to a wide variety of materials, in particular steel, aluminum and aluminum alloys. The method requires little preparation of the parts to be joined together at the location of the overlap area. Because of the simplicity of the method, it can be carried out quickly and with simple means. The number of transition blanks that can be produced per unit of time is large, even with limited investments. With the method it is simply possible to also make transition blankets of large dimensions, because in principle the method comprises no more than applying an adhesive layer and, if necessary, curing other pressure of the adhesive from the adhesive layer.
A further embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive layer thickness is chosen depending on at least one parameter from the list of parameters comprising thickness of the first part, thickness of the second part, degree of imposed deformation, geometry of the product to be manufactured from it and material properties of the first and / or second part.
A first requirement that can be imposed on the adhesive layer is that it must be of the same thickness throughout the overlap area, at least insofar as it is subjected to a possible shaping of the transition blank. When the transition blank is deformed, the adhesive layer must follow and be able to follow the deformation of its two parts. On the one hand, this means that the adhesive layer must not be too thick to prevent the two parts from moving relative to each other during deformation. The adhesive layer should not be too thin because then its deformability becomes too small and there is a danger that at least one of the two parts will crack during a deformation. Another problem with a glue layer that is too thin or with a glue layer of non-homogeneous thickness is that the two parts contact each other after deformation, so that galvanic corrosion still occurs.
A particularly simple embodiment of the method according to the invention, which moreover produces a high-quality transition blank, is characterized in that the thickness of the adhesive layer is adjusted by means of spacer elements included in the adhesive layer.
The spacer elements ensure that the first part and the second part at the location of the overlap area come at a distance from each other, determined by the dimensions of the spacer elements, and thus that the adhesive layer has a chosen thickness.
A further embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the spacer elements are included in the glue from which the glue layer is formed. In this embodiment it is possible to distribute the spacer elements in a desired amount and homogeneously in the adhesive.
Yet a further embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the spacer elements are spherical elements. In general, spherical elements are easy to manufacture. Due to their symmetry, their orientation in the adhesive does not affect the thickness of the adhesive layer.
In a still further elaboration, the method according to the invention is characterized in that the spacer elements are manufactured from glassy and / or ceramic material. Such materials are generally chemically inert and therefore do not react with the adhesive or the metal from which the first and second parts are made. Moreover, these materials have a high compressive strength with low deformation, so that the two metal parts to be joined together can be pressed in each other at the location of the overlap area. The adhesive 30 can be cured at elevated temperature in all embodiments of the method.
10 10 118 -4-10 10 118 -4-
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive layer is electrically insulating. This prevents conductive contact between the two metal parts and thus galvanic corrosion.
An embodiment of the method according to the invention, which is simple in application, is characterized in that the adhesive layer, whether or not provided with spacing elements, is applied in the form of a tape, tape or film. An adhesive tape, tape or film is simple, precisely positioned and quick to apply. Known means can be used for the application.
Preferably, the tape, tape or film is provided with an embedded network or embedded reinforcing elements, which on the one hand provides the tape, tape or film with the desired strength and handling during application and can also function as a spacer element.
The invention is also embodied in a transition blank in an embodiment as substantially obtained by a method as described above. Such a transition blank has the advantage that galvanic corrosion is easily prevented by the possibility of electrical insulation between the two metal parts. In addition, the transition blank can be produced in any size, within reasonable limits.
It is known to connect the two metal parts with a transition blank by means of an intermediate metal, for example nickel, to prevent galvanic corrosion. However, a method of applying such an intermediate metal, which is often done electrochemically, is a relatively slow process which is not easily made suitable for application on a large-sized transition blank.
The invention is also embodied in a part of a means of transport formed from a transition blank as described above. Such a part can be produced, for example, by pressing from a transition blank. Such a part can be used as a transition part between a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, between a steel undercarriage of a train and aluminum coach superstructure and between a steel car chassis and aluminum body parts. For automotive applications, the thickness of the steel part is in the order size of 0.6 to 1.2 mm and the aluminum part in the order size of 0.8 to 1.5 mm.
The invention will be described below with reference to the drawing, which shows a figure in which, in cross section, a non-limiting embodiment of a transition blank as obtained with the method according to the invention is shown.
In FIG. 1 is 1 a first metal part and 2 a second metal part which already overlap each other with an overlap area. Between the two parts 1 and 2 there is an adhesive layer 3 which connects the parts together. The adhesive layer 3 contains 10 spacer elements 4 which keep the two parts at a selected minimum distance from each other. It will be clear to the skilled person that the adhesive layer need not extend over the full width of the overlap area.
Where above is spoken of a metal, this also includes an alloy based on a metal.
