Abstract

The system can be carried to the required test location in a van (14). It is used to take samples from the ground below the water table (3). A bore hole (4) is drilled. A cylindrical sleeve (7) containing a piston (8) is inserted in the bore hole. The piston rod is pulled up, drawing a sample of slurry (9) into the cylinder via a simple flap valve. The sample is then inserted through another flap valve in the cover of a cylindrical barrel (11). The barrel is placed on a table (10) near the hole and is filled with nitrogen from a cylinder (12). The user can handle the sample tubes and cap them, using gloves inserted through ports in the side of the barrel.
