Abstract

A sample of the cable to be tested is clamped into place between uprights. Another length of similar cable is attached to the test cable at right angles. An eccentric mechanism is then used to apply repeated transverse tension. A microswitch is operated by every oscillation. The microswitch operates a counter. Eventually, one of cables will snap. At that point, the counter reading is recorded. Counter readings are used as a quality factor for comparing the durability of different cables.
