Abstract

The proximal end of the flexible tube (2) has a conical air intake with outer connections for the stimulation pulse. Insulated conductors (7, 8) run along the inside of the tube to two conductive rings (4, 5). The rings are set into grooves (6) on the outer wall of the tube near its distal end (3). Air can flow to and from the lung via holes in the end (12) of the tube and holes (25) at intervals in its wall. If the patient's breathing ceases, stimulation pulses are automatically delivered to the ring electrodes.
