Abstract

The method of coating a metallic substrate with thermoplastic material comprises: (i) preheating the substrate to a temp. T1; (ii) coating the substrate on one side with the other side held against a support at a temp. T2 (steps (i) and (ii) are repeated to coat the 2nd side); (iii) heating the coated substrate to a temp. T3, pref. within 0.5-5 s; (iv) cooling the coated substrate, pref. by water quench, within 1 s, from T3 to a temp. in the region of HDT/A-30; whereby T1 lies between HDT/A-30 and VST/B50, the characteristic temps. of the thermoplastic coating material in accordance with DIN ISO 306 and DIN 53461 respectively, T2 HDT/A-20 and T3 is the temp. at which the MFI (Melt Flow Index) is pref. 1-24 dg/minute, and most pref. 2-20 dg/minute. The thermoplastic coating material is mainly extruded sheet PP, pref. contg. 5-20 wt.% LDPE, and has an outer layer of PP modified with a polar organic material.
