Abstract

Cutting a three dimensional profile in a foam mattress or cushion using a linear cutting element (3), e.g. a cutting wire (3). The initial block of foam material (2) is first laid on a table (6) and pulled down onto the single or double radiused or curved surface (6a) by vacuum, such that its lower surface is pulled against the contour (6a). The vacuum is achieved between the foam block (2) and the curved surface (6a) by a switched vacuum pump (9) and line (8) connected to multiple drillings (7). The desired profile is then cut in the surface (4) of the foam block by linear movement of the cutting wire (3). Once the profile (4) has been cut in one direction, the table (6) can be rotated about its vertical axis to reposition the cutting wire to cut in e.g. a direction perpendicular to the original cutting direction to produce a particular pattern. On release of the vacuum, the originally flat surface of the profiled foam block recovers to exhibit a flat under (as shown) surface and a curved profiled face - the cushion being thicker in the centre than at its periphery.
