Abstract
A reduction in the number of binarizations and/or contexts used in context adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) for video coding is proposed. In particular, this disclosure proposes techniques that may lower the number contexts used in CABAC by up to 56. A method of encoding video data comprising: determining (802) a partition type for a prediction mode for a block of video data; encoding (804) a partition type bin of a prediction type syntax element for the block of video data using context adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) with a single context, wherein the single context is the same for any partition type; and encoding (806) a partition size bin of the prediction type syntax clement for the block of video data using CABAC in bypass mode. The partition type is an asymmetric partition. The partition type bin indicates whether the asymmetric partition is vertically partitioned or horizontally partitioned. The partition size bin indicates whether a first partition is one-quarter of a size of the block of video data or whether the first partition is three-quarters of the size of the block of video data.
